I remember a few years back when diesel shops were getting raided and shut down for "emissions violations" (even though they made the trucks run better than stock). After the government went full retard on electric vehicles I knew it was only a matter of time before they started on motorcycles.

The only problem with taking a stand is that it won’t be effective at anything but stopping the sale of those parts altogether, because the EPA does not give a rat’s ass about what people want. They are 100% committed to the eradication of all combustion engine vehicles. They can’t just ban them outright yet, so they’re taking the death by 1000 cuts approach. They will make it more and more difficult to modify cars and bikes for racing until racing ceases to exist, then they will continue making it more and more impossible for OEMs to meet fuel efficiency requirements until nothing is made but electric vehicles with limited range and the ability to be shut off remotely.

      @@UnrulyRider Good luck with that.
This issue has been coming for decades. The EPA has a set of street noise emission standards for both motorcycle OEMs and aftermarket parts suppliers. This has been true for at least the past 20+ years. It's why every once in a great while someone will get pulled over and ticketed for their 'loud pipes save lives' aftermarket exhaust.
And unsurprisingly every once in a great while the Feds get serious about enforcement. Obviously the Feds have been talking with Drag Specialties, among others. And obviously Drag Specialties has made the decision that taking the full risk of getting sued to oblivion by the Feds isn't worth the business. So by including that legal language in their catalogue, they are spreading that risk around. I would expect the Feds to be looking for someone to make an example of, so the same legal language is likely to be appearing in other parts catalogues as well.

Sadly, this has been the law in Canada for a long time. We can't legally put aftermarket exhausts on our bikes. Do people do it? Absolutely. It's up to the police to determine whether your bike is compliant or not, so if you run into a cop that doesn't like you or your bike, or the sound of your exhaust, you get a fat ticket and have to do an inspection by a certified shop or a dealership to sign off on your bike. You still have to pay the ticket or argue if your bike didn't have race only performance parts (yes, there are cases where people got tickets for running a stock bike and the cop simply didn't like you). Total BS and government overreach. I don't see governments banning private jets for the elite, but they will happily ban bike exhausts that make up less than 5% of vehicles on the road. Ridiculous.

Yes you CAN put aftermarket parts on your motorcycle in Canada. Shops are in no way obligated to follow the procedure mentioned in this video. Yes we have a noise law and you can be ticketed etc. And I'm sure it happens but few and far between. Everyone I know runs aftermarket exhaust and none have received a ticket for noise violation. I run V&H straight shots on my Harley and haven't had an issue. Sheesh in 1980 I had a inline 4 with a Yoshimura competition exhaust on it. Hahah it had a plate on the exhaust that said completion ONLY. I got tickets, speed variety, and never for exhaust. Anyway. We are NOT discouraged here as one might think. Cheers!

In order for the dealer to install the UpMap, the bike has to be delivered to the dealership in/on a trailer, bike must be race prepped (lights taped, license plate removed) and the dealership take photos of such coming and going.
You, as the owner of the bike, must sign a document stating you will only use the bike on track. This basically removes liability from everyone else but you.

This has been happening in the car scene for a few years now. Car tuners ie Hondata have been cited by the EPA for modding vehicles and paying hefty fines. Some companies have already been put out of business. Like it or not this is coming for motorcycling the same way. The gov't and manufacturers have declared that the code on the ECU is NOT the property of the vehicle owner therefore s/he cannot modify that code. With the amount of pollution the likes of coal rollers do, it's no surprise that these changes are coming down so hard.

If I'm reading the subtext correctly here, the big complaint is about open exhaust systems, right? Like the diesel guys, emission control systems are removed from motorcycles to make them louder and faster. Lots of bikers like loud for its own sake, and every biker likes faster. All that is being restricted here are open pipes that remove catalytic converters. You can still have performance parts on the street as long as they aren't too dirty.

  • @user-em7cf3cb9t

    Ill start this by saying
    I OWN A HARLEY DAVIDSON
    I HAVE AFTER MARKET PARTS
    I HAVE AN AFTERMARKET EXHAUST
This problem actually started by us the riders. I lived in a outlying area of the city and WAY TOO OFTEN people sat on their bikes revving their straight pipes at 2 am outside the local bar. I now live in the country on a back country road. I often have people on the road with an exhaust SOOOO loud it can be heard at the end of my road a mile and a half away ALL hours of the day.
It used to be that the riders would respect people and not hammer on the throttle while most people were sleeping. They would not rev the piss out of their bikes in a residential area thinking they are Joe Cool.
There is no need to be at the top end of the RPM`s in a residential area ....... shift the damn bike and get the RPM`s lower and not Piss everyone off.
I have had multiple people thank me for coming home at night while keeping the bike as quiet as possible when people are obviously sleeping..........The government didn't wake up one day and say lets piss the motorcycle community off for the hell of it..... lets limit the purchase of parts and eliminate the income of sales tax.
Way too many Riders do not care about the community and the community made complaints to the town board and / or police and the legislation got pushed thru.
WE NEED TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF OUR MISTAKES AS WELL!!!!!

This has already happened in the Automotive repair industry and the Diesel repair industry. Shops still performing much of this type of performance work are hanging their asses out a mile. I had hoped that because of the low volume of actual damage being done to the environment by motorcycles that it would never come but here it is. Hell it's even happened in the lawn mower industry. Not that exhaust and cam's were being installed on mowers but certainly compliance regarding lower emissions by manufactures has and hard starting and poor running mowers are the result. I don't think anyone is going to stop it.
On the bright side most of the new motorcycles run great because of technology advancements like VVT.
Unfortunately I think the street market after market performance industry is doomed at least as it exists today.

I live in Canada. Certain towns and cities in Quebec are clamping down on noise emitted from motorcycles. My Magnaflow pipes on my Softail would not pass the noise by-law there. I live in Nova Scotia where they don't bother with loud pipes. I don't know what parts are on the EPA list as it wasn't discussed but I do know some bikes are just too loud. When people complain, laws happen. There are streets on the South shore of Montreal where motorcycles ar prohibited due to excessive noise. I think us bikers have a responsibility to show respect to our neighbours. I like a little rumble and like a few extra ponies but find there is no room for straight pipes. I have asked after market manufacturers what dB levels a set of pipes would emit before buying them and the sellers would never give me a clear answer. How can I make an informed decision if I am not given the numbers? So, I'd like to know which "race parts" are actually targeted by the feds? And who's fault is it anyway if people complain bikes are too loud?

I am in Australia, and we are somewhere between Canada and the US. If the manufacturers were allowed by the regulations to make their OEM exhaust sound like a motorcycle there would not be any need for aftermarket exhausts. Catalytic converters flow well nowdays so having a cat is not really the issue. The Mercedes AMGs prove that you the OEM's can build a great sounding exhaust.
