  • Singapore will allow more people to have assistance dogs in public housing flats. Those with physical disabilities, are deaf, or hard of hearing will be allowed to have such dogs later this year. Currently, there are only nine assistance dogs in Singapore and they all support blind people. The move is Singapore's latest step toward a more inclusive society. In a 2022 survey of over 600 people, more than nine in 10 supported the use of assistance dogs in day-to-day life. Nikhil Khattar reports.

Other first world countries already have dog assistance and can go everywhere in public. Singapore 40 or more years so late!

The government has been looking into the lifting of the ban at least since 2011, and the parliamentary exchanges listed above suggest that the PAP government’s historical stance has been a significant barrier to lifting the ban on cat ownership in HDB flats, not the reluctance of the community or HDB residents.

While PAP’s post seems to suggest that the matter of cat ownership in HDB flats has recently been raised by its MPs, it has been a subject of parliamentary discussion since the implementation of the HDB Animals Rules in 1989.

Yes the gov LIED about the 99 year lease
A more responsible narrative would have informed the public that capital gains would be possible only in the short to medium term. It should have been made clear to all that quite simply, public housing on a 99-year lease cannot be expected to appreciate endlessly.

The PAP FB post suggests that PAP parliamentarians played a key role in this policy shift, but a review of historical debates paints a different picture.

Lawrence Wong finally spoke the unvarnished truth about 99-year leases - that flats would be returned to the HDB and only a small percentage of flats would undergo the Selective En-Bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS).

There was a highly negative public reaction to this clarification. One academic at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy put it this way: “The government hasn’t been entirely consistent in their messaging with regards to housing policy, which created the uncertainty and anxiety.”

It could be influential factors in the decision to revisit this policy, which, according to many, should not have been enacted in the first place.

However, Dr John Chen Seow Phu, then Minister of State for National Development, replied that licensing was not a solution, as it would not prevent cats from causing nuisances or scavenging for food.

for you to speak on behalf of the disabled community is frankly distasteful. not all disabled people will benefit from a service dog but some will and it will be life changing as it will give them independence and their dignity back. i will bet folks will rather bring their dog than their helper on their date.

@@giddygirl1234 ..you must be an idiot to think a dog besides offering companionship, can do more once a person is handicap.
Worse, if a person is handicap and elderly. You need someone. A human to assist.
At your current way of thinking and at the HIGH cost the country is operating, it would better for you to check in to Mandai early if you ever faced such issue yourself, which you will, when you grow old....here.
