  • Shipment delays in Singapore have more than doubled, hit by a shortage of ships and containers, and congestion at ports. This could translate into higher prices for consumers, amid an impending supply chain crisis. One analyst says some sectors in Singapore are expected to come off worse from container and ship shortages. These include firms in the manufacturing industry, especially those involved in producing heavy goods, like consumer electronics or electric vehicles. Nasyrah Rohim and Charlotte Lim report.

@@xianlonglee-ty6qe quite alarmist reporting from CNA. The exporters are rushing now to beat Aug 2024 when many of the tariffs kick in. After that the shipment volumes will come back down. Building so much spare capacity to address a 3-month "boom" period, especially much of it in capex-heavy investment, and much of it would probably lie idle afterwards - perhaps we might blame them for low utilization at that point

Actually, this highlights why Thailand's land bridge idea is ridiculously stupid. It completely wouldn't be able to handle this scenario at all. Can you imagine how high the additional costs will run if Thailand got hit with this kind of crisis? Air freight might end up being cheaper. For every incoming ship, there's always going to be an additional ship at the other end that must remain idle, waiting for the cargo transfer. And both sides must build up the capacity to handle the container surge. Double the ships, double the port size, double the manpower, double the investment for a single shipment. And to have all of it bottlenecked during cargo transfer over land.

Go to HK for what? The ships with all the stuff are trying to get across to the other side. You tell China to move stuff to HK to load onto a ship makes more sense, but who wants to pay more to move it there when there are no ships there anyway? Singapore is, and will always be, the bottleneck. Unless somebody cuts across land, which won't last for long anyway, because Singapore can simply increase capacity by expanding its ports, which is already being done.

Nobody expected this and problems primarily coming from the shipping lines pushing their issues onto the port.

Singapore should end freezing certain Russian banks so that we can join Russia - China many projects in Eastern Russia. A new sea route may start soon. An agreement was reached between Russia, China, and North Korea to open up the Turmen River so that it can accommodate big container ships using the widen river to reach northern and Western Russia and in future to Europe, because it is very costly and not productive to build railroad across the harsh cold Siberia. Perhaps, in the near future, Russia's Vladivostok Naval Base may move inland which is much safer from external threat. A new higher bridge that connects Russia and North Korea will be built to allow big container ships pass through the river. And Vladivostok City will be developed.

If PSA cannot handle more complex market operating environment in a competitive manner, feel free to privatize port operation to professional companies. If PAP government continues managing our ports, Singapore may one day lose out to more innovative foreign operators overseas, such as China, Thailand, or even Malaysia.
