    Absolutely incredible video and will definitely help me make huge strides! I do have a dumb question since I've heard many people argument both for and against this: when would you use a linear phase EQ in mastering? I know that LP can cause pre-ringing, but I can't exactly hear that on anything other than a sine wave at this point in my learning journey. What are your thoughts?

    • @panorama_mastering
      @panorama_mastering  Před rokem +2

      To be honest; I rarely use linear phase when mastering; a lot of the pre-ringing you'll be able to hear will be on LF content;
      The only specific use case I can think of for using linear phase consistently in mastering is if I'm looking to cut low frequencies from the side signal; as keeping that signal in phase is important for the mono-translation of the low-end;

    One question. By gain staging on true peak -6db, I noticed at times the processing increased the perceived loudness. Whilst it is the point from a "maximizing loudness" perspective, won't the increased perceived loudness skew our ears to prefer the louder/processed signal? Wouldn't it be good to also test on the same perceived loudness to make some critical decisions for eq, compression, etc?

    • @panorama_mastering
      @panorama_mastering  Před rokem

      No worries;
      You're correct; namely I keep peak levels consistent so peak detectors on dynamics processors in a chain can continue to operate with similar chain signals; the level matching/perceived loudness; I'll do by level matching the output of the master to the original mix;

    I was wondering : can true peak really be our reference ? I understood that it makes easier to calibrate tools, but A/B listening seems wrong (for me !).. The dynamic tools brings a lot of loudness and I was thinking that A/B should be done on apparent loudness rather than on same true peak's levels.. I might be completely off, but isn't it what LUFS is designed for ?

    For some reason, is it me? I listen to this a lot. Hi Hat is sounding first left side, then right side. Sometimes Overheads are inverted.
    It could be a bit lower. I find it quite crispy and “disclocated from the mix” (as I usually say). Like it’s own world.
    There is some digital distortion in the pre-bridge part that’s kinda rough on the ears.
    Maybe a bit more 60 Hz.
    I feel like the mix doesn’t really change through macrodynamics. Even when the last hit comes back, it doesn’t hit. I’ll explain myself below.
    💕
    Gtr, Drum & Bass groove hard, these draw me in.
    The vocal is really consistent, I love that.
    The tone of the main elements is great.
    💬
    I’m having this struggle at the moment with the way I listen, just putting more instruments is not the same as actually lifting the energy just because. We have macrodynamics, a way we go into section from another section. How Verse 1 compares to Verse 2 & so on. Microdynamics is another balance we should be also putting attention too, even though mix should be safe by now. Ideally
    Oh you precisely talked about macro & micro after writing this (I paused the video to copy my text before listening ha).
    I found you on TkTk, I really like how precise you are. I couldn’t agree more with a lot of the things you say & show. Thanks for taking the time to share & make in depth videos as well. Internet is a lonely place. :)
    My only actual complain with your process is why -.2? All Streaming requires -1 dB TB, codecs need that space to avoid distortion. .8 dB is not going to turn a song into a hit & even though everyone listens on headphones an only 5% of us care about that distortion, why? It's a very honest question.

    • @panorama_mastering
      @panorama_mastering  Před rokem

      Thanks for dropping by; lots to unpack in that comment; but appreciate you taking the time; I'll take one bite at a time here;
      The -0.2 is because I will always audition with a codec before committing the master and make changes if audible distortion is being introduced; and often; unless you've got raving ISP's rarely is it causing audible distortions; never had the streaming platforms punish me or my clients for it; as an ADM certified engineer I also do print out in parallel a -1.0dBTP version if my clients wish to submit their masters for ADM(Apple digital masters); that's really the only platform that has documented a standard which the engineers need to ADHERE TO; Spotify's -2dBTP is simply a "suggestion".

    • @panorama_mastering
      @panorama_mastering  Před rokem +3

      Hey man :)
      It's simple; whether you're at 0.2 0.3 -1.0dbTP what matters is that you audition the material through a codec; that's what matters; is what actually happens to that specific master when it goes through a 96kbps aac codec;
      Probably need to do a whole video on this topic alone;

    the bass in the verse needs some more depth. and for me drums panning of toms individually if able and making sure the cymbals have some width that is equal roughly to the same stereo fields as the toms give or take by 15 % of the panning so for example if the left side tom was panned out 40 % left the the left cymbal slightly further panning by an amount all by taste more than a specific variable depends on the song im picky as hell about where drums set in a mix and i like to have my cymbals and toms to be very wide and giving the kick and snare more center pan space same for the hi hat and ride i go in vs the other cymbals and toms like only 15% to 25 or 30% panning and try and set it up to where they all have there only pocket in a stereo field as if you were behind the drums but slightly exaggerated and then i throw reverb and blend the dry and the fx channel in and eq the reverb as well to cut out the low end kick range some and roll off highs
