    This thing with mastering, unlike mixing, is that you see all sorts of videos basically talking about the same thing: subtractive eq, colour eq, compression, saturation, clipping nowadays and limiting, and it's all fine and all, even working with plugins like gullfoss eq and soothe to clean up some harshness that can result from compression, which is fair. What I don't see people talking about, certainly not for free on youtube, are other techniques such as using the Fletcher Munson curve during mastering, mostly because mixes come to mastering a lot darker and bass heavy or transient heavy than they should, so a reverse Fletcher Munson curve usually solves that with a tool like SlickEq M. Crest factor, again, most people don't understand it at all, 99% of amateur mixes have very poor balances, but even the better ones still have too much kick transients compared to the bass information, and again, almost nobody talks about this in mastering tutorials. That alone will eat most headroom and oblige the ME to mess with the mix tonally. I'm not hearing anything about psychoacoustics, predominantly on how to bring a certain frequency range into focus, nothing about band selective compression (not with multiband comps, but tools like DS1 Mk3) used specifically to avoid distortion down the chain, not too much about Vari-mu comps and what that adds to the sound, where and when to use it. So I guess what I'm saying here is that MEs are still trying to keep to themselves and only give out crumbles for free on youtube, which is why a lot of mixers started having this idea that mastering is basically glorified limiting, and we all know that's not the case. This is my 2 cents on the matter...

      @CeZarMusic Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@RealHomeRecording Sure, I'm not saying that this should be the case, BUT 99% of mixers think that mastering is, again, glorified limiting, and it's all because of these tutorials. If they don't understand that there's a very different approach to mastering vs mixing, and that it does involve other stuff than just eq, compression and saturation, maybe mastering engineers will have more clients, music will start sounding better on streaming platforms and we'd all know our job description.

    I gonna say something controversial but I’ve been training myself probably over a decade about this:
    LEARN TO MIX TO A POINT THAT YOU INCORPORATE MASTERING IN THE CHAIN.
    I explain: the most controlled mix the less mastering manipulation (instead of over Eq/compress/saturate the less mastering process) this take a lot of time practice but once you have it you are a MASTER of MASTERS in the box
    Rest your ears every 45 minutes top.

    I did a video call "The Only Mixing Tips You'll Ever Need" - What These Lists Get Wrong a couple of years ago because I find those absolutist tips like "don't use a compressor", "never add more than 2db of EQ on 1 frequency" frustrating. Only a Sith deals in absolutes. There are infinite situations you could find yourself in and you have to use your ears each time.
    Having said that, I don't think every tutorial on CZcams has to be perfect. I realised later on that stuff I learnt in college was wrong and corrected myself later on in my career. I was still able to advance though because 90% of what was taught was useful. It's fair to point out though.

    Hell CZcams also normalizes roughly to -14 I believe but do any YT-to-mp3 rip you'll see that that ain't the level many edm producers go for
    (Also, remember that many edm producers still go for loud-loud and so people say that by removing that 0-20Hz and 19k-20k range, you get more room to push the limiter and compressor (cause compressors and a lot of bass don'ttend to like each other in heavy uses). Everything about edm master tutorials is about loud)

    I basically agree … but not only in this video you point out that a low cut can introduce phase issues. But if i had to cut out something in the very low part of a mix (without the chance to correct it in the mix) i would always use linear phase mode. I think that‘s what he was trying to say with „its safer to use linear“. But that also counts for cutting any sub frequencies on individual tracks with base heavy elements. The problem of pre-ringing that comes with linear phase mode was never a problem for me in a full mix so far.

  • @Beatsbasteln
    @Beatsbasteln Před rokem +3

    "the lower the frequencies are the more headroom they take in your track"
    why no? the fletcher munson curve says that humans have a hard time listening to extreme lowend and highend. that is where we need to push the volume most to get it audible at all. that is literally the reason why it's so tricky to get the lowend levels right. overdoing it slightly and you already end up without any headroom. a bit too less and the track is already way too soft. and the lowest frequency off all, 0hz, also called dc offset, is even so bad, that if it has any value at all except 0, it lowers the headroom without even producing sound at all. doesn't mean you should always lowcut as steeply as possible whenever you can, because of the reasons you mentioned, but you have to give this man credit, because it's not all wrong.
    btw it seems like the video cuts off before it ends. or idk if that's on purpose but you were just in the middle of talking about white sea studio's tip when it was suddenly over. could it be that you accidently didn't upload the full thing?

      I get what you're saying here and understand anecdote; but it's important when presenting information for people to follow that the language is accurate and people learning can't missinterpret.
      I'm sticking to the facts; low frequencies don't take up "more" headroom; it's an inaccurate description;
      A low frequency 25hz signal at -6dBTP and a 500hz signal at -6dBTP are both taking up the exact same amount of headroom;
      And even then; introducing aggressive filters like this at the cross-over points can INCREASE the peak signal thus reducing the relative headroom;
      If he had said what you said; I wouldnt've pounced on it;

    • @Beatsbasteln
      @Beatsbasteln Před rokem +1

      @@panorama_mastering what you said about peaks is actually what should be said more often. most people don't know that a filter can actually enhance peak levels, even though it takes frequencies away in the process, even if you don't dial in resonance, q, gain or slope. that is exactly why the steep highpass can do damage if it is not applied with purpose

    Thanks for pointing out some the nonsense out there that is being push on people.
    And thanks for saying "you are not getting rid of, you are attenuating". I always say to myself when hearing people say cutting/cut the frequencies out, when in fact they are just reducing/attenuating that frequency band/range, not cutting it out of the signal all together. These people do my head in because they act like they know everything but display that they really don't know much at all.

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording Před 9 měsíci +1

      Well I would say that the word cut is along the lines with a haircut. You don't typically remove the entire piece of hair you are just trimming it down. So the language works.

    Most of them try to make mastering easy for kids to understand, when in fact it's hella technical field, that unfortunately it's surounded by a lot of mysticism. These tips are understandable when it comes to mixing which I think it leaves way more space for art and craft.

  • @MarkDLion
    @MarkDLion Před rokem +3

    Many of these tips are just a product of the lowest common denominators. For instance, I started using a limiter on every mix track, I would consider it a valid tip, cause it is going to save your ears and speakers/headphones from random milliseconds transients that musically do nothing but they just punch your eardrums. That is obviously going to destroy the sound if you don't know what you are doing.
    There are also a lot of tips that come from the analog world that don't make sense in the digital one.

    • @MarkDLion
      @MarkDLion Před rokem

      @@panorama_mastering I think that point is for people that upload only on streaming platforms, which is how 99% of them start publishing music.
      If you are already in the industry, you hopefully have a pro who masters the track for the different media, and you don't look for tutorials.
      For instance, Google reduced the volume of this video -2.1dB, cause you didn't care to aim at CZcams's loudness standard. If this was music and you introduced some distortions to add 2 dB, that distortion was worthless, and the sound was ruined for nothing. The idea is to take control of the normalization so you don't have to trust Google's algorithm.
      Out of curiosity I just checked Katy Perry and Dua Lipa channels. The new tracks have the volume increased by 6/7dB, which means they dind't even uploaded the squeezed sousage master but a quite version and they trusted Google with the normalization. Spotify has similar algorithm. So, now the game is about tricking the normalizing.
      BTW I have no professional audio experience, I'm an engineer in other fields, I'm just speculating.

    • @danthegeetarman
      @danthegeetarman Před rokem

      @@MarkDLion fair enough but even in that case still a horrible idea. Lots of people have loudness normalization off (including myself) so when a -14 song plays next to any other song, it is annoyingly low. Professional EDM masters are some of the loudest masters right now, so you do an any master at -14, it will sound like a whisper against professional tracks. -14 is one of the worst myths amateurs are pushing and NONE of the professional mastering engineers are doing -14. Even acoustic folk songs are louder than -14.

      Are you going to do a separate master for every streaming service's requirements? What happens when one day they change said requirements? Re-do everything? That is in no way scalable. Make the master good as it can be, and don't worry about that stuff.

    The moment I promised myself to stop watching Mastering Tutorials on CZcams was seeing some of Streakys videos. I've never seen so much wrong info as in some of his videos. The guy literally tells people to completely de-link the L&R-Channels on a limiter. Like seriously wtf. There are not many thing that can ruin your master as much as completely de-linking channels. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

    hey great vid, just wanted to leave my thoughts on the eq thing around 8:40 :
    normal parametric eq's add a phase shift to the frequencies they boost / cut, just like analog ones do too. and i've heard people say that the specific details of the phase shift are part of the 'flavor' of a specific eq. even if it doesn't introduce additional harmonics.
    so when you're boosting, you're adding flavor to the same frequencies you are boosting, but when you're cutting you're adding 'flavor' to the frequencies you're cutting away, so therefore it also makes the phase shift / flavor less audible.
    i think that's why you sometimes hear people suggest cutting instead of boosting - it's preserves the natural sound in a way, because the frequencies you're adding artifacts to by phase shift are being lowered in volume anyway. of course it still affects the frequencies around it depending on the slope etc. but it's still a point to make.
    so it makes sense that if you do want the specific flavor of an eq, even if it's just a standart parametric eq, cutting the mids would keep the sound more natural, and boosting highs and lows would add more flavor / phase shift to the signal as a whole. still i'm not sure about this piece of advice, and i personally can't hear the difference of phase shift anyway. i did read about that in mastering bob katz book though (i think) so i thought i'd drop a comment. let me know if i'm wrong about this

    I've tried the 'cut mids' vs 'boost highs & lows' and I have to agree with Streaky here. I was expecting it to sound the same (I did gain match) but it didn't. The boosted signal sounded much better to me, but none the less they were very different. I'm not a pro and and can't explain it, but I think that's what Streaky was getting at?

Alan Silverman The Future of Mastering: Loudness in the Age of Music Streaming is on CZcams if you want to learn this people some of the worst music today is doing better and not because of the song do the math songs or most songs today don't hit right and wont until people stop smashing the life out of the master o have only listen to 4:14 seconds of this and that's it for more so like you don't want to hear people talk about this or that we have that part in common peace

    I'm short listed for an Audio Production Senior lecturing gig that'll see me flying out the country for 12 months and I've still got the Pro-L2 video bookmarked to give it the proper time, attention, then time in front of the speakers and behind the controls to properly consolidate the information you're sharing. In terms of real-world application and what goes on under the hood etc you're in a league entirely of your own -- at least when it comes to public facing platforms.
    I'm sure Bob and Ian etc are on it as well but they're not pumping out CZcams videos a couple of times a fortnight.
    If I get the gig please start a Patreon. It's a professional obligation to stay abreast of the latest in the industry and there's no online resource for sourcing, consolidating and communicating better than you.

    Not Streaky's best explanation but let's put some respect on his name. The guy is one of the UK's top mastering engineers. His credential list is hugely impressive and he has been entrusted with mastering so many top artists over the past two and a half decades. He is also an accomplished mix engineer, and by all accounts has done very well for himself. It's pretty difficult to offer mastering tips, because people always want to be told exactly what to do, yet topics on mastering are generally nuanced and rarely black and white. The answer can nearly always be "Well, that's true in some cases, but...". That being said, I think a good piece of advice is to always lean on the side of less compression.

    • @audionerdlilcuz
      @audionerdlilcuz Před 4 měsíci

      @@soulofwaveswhile they don't sound the same, it is also true it doesn't matter which rate you mix or master at. It is just a matter of how many snapshots you want to be taken of the audio when choosing a rate to record at or sample up or down to.

    • @soulofwaves
      @soulofwaves Před 4 měsíci

      @@audionerdlilcuz I would disagree on that. For example, when doing pitch correction or pitch shifting a 44.1 khz audio file can get noticeable artifacts, while at 48 khz it's practically unnoticeable. At the same time, when applying processing that involves some sort of distortion at mixing or mastering (saturation, clipping, limiting etc) even 48 khz are recommended to be oversampled in order to avoid undesired distortion and artifacts especially in the high end. All of these procedures matter because low sample rates (especially 44.1 khz) have their limitations. So, it definitely matters: it's not the same, and it doesn't sound the same.

    Regarding Streaky you've taken him completely out of context as he's a top mastering engineer. You point out his comment re not using a compressor yet Streaky uses compression all the time and teaches about it in mastering. Regarding point on EQ, he's talking about surgical cuts that should be done in mixing stage, not in mastering stage. That's the problem with looking at one video snippet of someone who is known as a too mastering engineer who has had some big names/ artists he's mastered for! And he has a top mastering studio to boot. Maybe you should interview him so he can put into context what you have criticized him for, otherwise others who watch this video will see him in a discredited light! So, get him on an interview, I'd be interested to watch it. I think you've put up some good videos but be careful to just jump in and rubbish someone whose methods you know little about and which isolated videos tell you very little in context and not forgetting we all can do videos where we make mistakes too.🤗
