  • I used the power of Artificial Intelligence to restore this fascinating 120 year old video of a tram ride through Edwardian Nottingham City Centre.
The original was recorded by Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon in 1902 aboard one of Nottingham Corporations old trams. This new version has been produced in 2022 to mark 120 years since it was recorded.
I hope to bring some light into Nottinghams past and how much the city has changed in 120 years, but also to restore some loving memories people may have.
    I hope you enjoy!
The route is as follows - Station Street, Carrington Street, Lister Gate, Albert Street, St. Peters Square, Wheeler Gate, Old Market Square, Long Row, Queen Street, Milton Street.
Just as a disclaimer - This video is an interpretation of the original video. The original video was recorded without audio. The colour, some of the frames, some of the details and the sound in this upscaled video are entirely fake and have been generated for entertainment and/or educational purposes only and are not supposed to be a 100% factual rendition of the past.
    Software used:
Upscaling (adding detail and resolution to reduce blur) - RealESRGAN
Interpolation (adding frames to boost FPS) - DAIN
    Colourisation - DeOldify
Added Sound - Logic Pro X

Very Interesting! I thought the tram was going to Sherwood but it turned back towards city centre. The video is not on normal speed is it?

It seems to be moving forward toward Sherwood at the end but cuts out.
The video has been 'speed corrected' which attempts to play the video at a more realistic speed.

Is that Carrington Street goods offices and sheds in the start of the footage ?

Yes it is, goes through what is/was the old Broadmarsh area through to Lister gate. You can see the old Yates pub when it gets to the market square.

    Whato all,
Another sequence ruined by bad colourisation. Why bother?
