    Penetration Testing (Pentesting) is seen as one of the coolest areas to work of Information Security and Cyber Security. What would be cooler than sitting around and breaking things all day? As a result, people are constantly trying to figure out the best path to learn the highly sought after ethical hacking skills. Likewise, defenders or blue teamers will also try to learn the techniques used by the bad guys to better defend their networks.
    In this video, I am going to walk you through my recent experience with the eLearnSecurity Junior Penetration Tester (eJPT) certification and the Penetration Testing Student (PTS) course. I will also cover a potential certification path towards the highly sought after OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional) certification.

    I started my Pent Testing journey last year. What I found along the way is that who you are as a person really dictates what kind of pen tester you should be... For ME: Im offensive all the way. Ive long said that you dont need a good defense if your offense if BOMB!! But some people that its in who they are will disagree and want to be more defensive. Either way both have a solid need in the industry. RED TEAM FOR THE WIN!!!

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +3

      It's true that personality and several other factors shape what kind of jobs you get. Specifically for penetration testing, the BEST and MOST valuable penetration testers are those who not only know how to bypass the security measures in-place but also know why the issues exist and how to fix them. Since many penetration testers are consultants, a consultant who can only tell you what's wrong is pretty worthless if they can't help fix it.

Before I knew it my exam voucher was nearing expiry so I contacted support who recommended I upgrade to Elite. I only had to upgrade for $100. My existing lab time was added unto the 60hrs. • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +2

      You are welcome and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The standard labs will focus on a specific skill based on the corresponding lesson. If you become comfortable with those skills then you should be able to pass. With the black-box labs you get a simulated penetration test environment that gives you little to no information and let's you chain together everything you've learned. With the elite package you also get downloadable PDFs, which might not be as beneficial if you are going into another certification for example the eCPPT that dives deeper into penetration testing. Basically, if you have the $100 to get the elite package (full is $399 vs elite $499) then it's definitely helpful but it's not something I would say is 100% required.

      Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! I have not tried the blue team certification yet (just released this summer) but it definitely looks interesting. Sometimes when brand new certifications are released, they don't have a huge appeal to employers for a few years so it might not be worth prioritizing just yet. Also, I always recommend you see what companies put in their job postings when deciding certifications because that's what they know and that's what they want.

    Great video , thank you for that really needed some kinda of info about this cert . I am a beginner when in it comes to penetration testing but I have good knowledge of sucerity and reasonable background of networking , my question is do I have to take abit more in depth courses before approaching the security+ certificate. Because i am kinda hesitant I might face difficulties or 101 stuff i should learn prior.

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Penetration testing relies on a lot of foundational knowledge in order to be successful. I don't think the eJPT will necessarily turn heads when you go to interviews, however if you have Security+ then you will have a certification that employers like in entry level employees. I would not go for the eJPT until you at least have the Network+ and Security+ because you just won't have the foundational knowledge even for a beginner level penetration testing certification. I do not think somebody who is brand new to the field without that knowledge could pass eJPT very easily. Like any certification, the more material that is brand new to the student the more difficult the certification becomes.

      Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the video! What is your goal? How much experience do you have? The Security+ will give you a well rounded education in security where the eJPT (PTS is the course) is heavily focused on penetration testing so you will miss some of the general knowledge. Without knowing much about your background, Security+ and then eJPT is the most logical path for somebody early on in their career.

    Hi Jhon, that's a great video. I am from accounting background and have done only CISA apart from my CA. Now just doing a graduate level certificate in Cyber Security which is setting up some base around python and networking skills. I love to be a Pentester. Do you recommend ejpt to me and one more thing do you also recommend spending $100 on top of 499 for unlimited lab access for a person like me with less IT background? Thank you

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +1

      I would honestly get Security+ before doing the eJPT if that is your plan. If you just get the eJPT, you will not be a very well rounded security professional and based on the fact that most people do not end up in penetration testing roles, you want to make yourself as marketable as possible. If you have the extra $100 to spend then it's not a bad idea because you can practice the labs a lot. It's not absolutely necessary to get the unlimited lab time and you could also even go to something like Try Hack Me and do some of the intro rooms for very low cost ($10 per month) to prepare you. I would not do Hackthebox over Try Hack Me though because you will absolutely not get enough out of it because it is more difficult and has less training.

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +2

      Correct, however eLearnSecurity has been part of INE for a little bit now. From what I can tell, the content objectives look about the same. To be honest, all of the material that I learned going through the eLearnSecurity platform is still relevant so it's not like they need to update it yet. The higher level certifications generally need to be updated more frequently but I'm hoping that INE will stay on top of changes as they happen. INE has a really good reputation in the networking world so I'm fairly confident in their abilities.

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank you for the recommendation! I will add it to the list. I wouldn't say the CISA is "essential" to Cyber Security. The CISA is all about auditing and identifying where risk exists with a focus primarily on processes and a little bit on technology. The knowledge is beneficial for anybody in Cyber Security but you typically see more consultants who are CISA certified. I became CISA certified a few years ago so I will definitely go into more detail in a video.

      Do you NEED them? Not necessarily but you do need the knowledge of how networks work in order to be effective. As far as the next step, there really isn't a wrong answer. If you are currently working, which path would help you the most in your job? Ultimately you need knowledge from both paths in your career.
