    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber Před 7 hodinami

      The only time it makes sense to have multiple technical degrees is if you are going for a PhD, which most people don't aim for, let alone finish if they start down that path. If you have a technical undergraduate degree, nearly all employers aren't going to care if you have an advanced technical degree because you still look about the same. People with technical undergraduate degrees are much better off getting a graduate degree such as an MBA (Master of Business Administration) because that improves your professional position in the job market. If you were to get an undergraduate degree in a non-technical area, the advice would be the opposite to get a technical master's degree.

      Learning a tool like Splunk is never a core skill that leads directly to a job. The concepts of how things work are what provides job security/opportunities regardless of the tool. Knowledge of a tool is generally more of a "bonus" that could be used to further separate candidates in the hiring process.

    I'm not even understanding how people are making this comparison. Those two certifications come into play at very different stages in your career, one is entry level and the other requires real-life experience to even be allowed to sit for the exam. By the time you go for the CISSP you probably had the Security+ for years, or maybe even stopped renewing it by then. These two certs are worlds apart, and it's not about which one is better, you'll probably get both at different points in your life. If you're contemplating on taking the Sec+ exam, then you're not ready for the CISSP and more than likely don't meet the requirements to take it. If you're at the point where you're ready for the CISSP, then you're way beyond the Sec+.

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber Před dnem

      It's important to understand that I get questions from people of all experience levels, and my ultimate goal is to help people in their journey regardless of experience level. Although this might not be a question you have, which is completely fine, that doesn't mean other people don't need an answer to it, and we certainly aren't going to (and shouldn't) hate on them for asking. Also, for the correctness of your comment, the CISSP has an experience requirement to get certified, but you do not technically need any "real-life" experience to sit for the exam.

    • @galloe

      @@JonGoodCyberI didn't realize this video is 4 years old, it just popped up in my suggestions. I completely understand what you're saying, and I respect that you're trying to help and answer people's questions. I just feel it was addressed in an odd way. The whole "Which one is better?" and "So which one should you go for?" questions seem out of place, because they're not comparable at all. It's not like anyone is going to come to the point where they have to decide which one to take between the two. It's as if you're pitting them against each other, or like we're being forced to choose one over the other, when in reality most people will benefit from acquiring both, just at very different points in their career. To me, it's almost like asking the question, "Should I apply for a SOC Analyst position, or should I apply for CISO?" Well, what's your skill level and experience? Anyway, I'm not trying to invalidate anything you're saying, I just found it a bit strange to approach this the way you did. Thank you for the content!

      I highly recommend watching the full review I did on the certificate, but in short, no it will not prepare you sufficiently for a job in cybersecurity nor even in IT. Any success story based on the certificate alone is due to a massive amount of luck and not actually having the required skills/knowledge.

  • @casualpeen

    completely disagree with you. This was my first certificate for the career. there is a huge emphasis on the certification being for people with zero knowledge and experience. It took my 4 weeks to complete I immediately used the discount voucher they gave me and studied for the Sec+ from CompTIA and passed it about 2 weeks later. I must say, it was probably the best thing I could have done to kickstart my knowledge in the field. I would not recommend it to those already in the field as it really is not aimed at those kind of learners. but if overall you like to learn or if you are brand spanking new, yes yes yes yes.

    The A+ is SMART if you want to get into Cybersecurity. Here's why: The A+ is part of the cybersecurity "trifecta" including Network+ and Security+. My dad started with the A+ 10 years ago and now works as a cybersecurity engineer making north of 200k. I am enrolled in a Cybersecurity bachelors program with WGU. This program has the "Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense" stamp of approval by the NSA. The FIRST class in this degree program? A+ 220-1101 and 220-1102. The cert is two classes and counts as 8 credits towards your degree. The A+ may not help you with the deeper parts of cybersecurity, but it is a building block to strengthen and reinforce "the basics". 100% recommend the A+ and the BSCSIA at WGU!!!!

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber Před 5 dny

      I appreciate your comment! First, all of my recommendations and what's actually expected by employers can be found in my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ). Next, let's discuss each point that you just made: 1. The "trifecta" was a marketing attempt by CompTIA to brand more certifications so that it seemed like a requirement. When it originally was named, it made sense for reasons I'm not going to go into in a comment. That's great that your dad had success, but that also doesn't mean that was the best path. Somehow people make the assumption that the A+ will completely halt your career...not true...but there are fast and efficient paths, and then there's slow drawn out paths that include the A+. With a reasonable amount of cybersecurity experience, $200k is great, but it's not some unattainable figure. 2. That means absolutely nothing and WGU is known to pad their programs to make them look more comprehensive, especially when compared to a traditional degree program. The NSA CAE curriculum (i.e., knowledge points) are available online ( public.cyber.mil/ncae-c/documents-library/ ) and if you look at them, you will see that the coverage of hardware and my stance are aligned...but not aligned with the assumption of depth that you are making. A common mistake that new people make is assuming that just because there seems to be a level of hierarchy with CompTIA certifications, that doesn't mean that the A+ is considered the required basics. The content that you actually need from the A+ is covered completely again, but deeper, in the other certifications so why learn it twice? If you're in a program like WGU, there's probably no way around it so just do it....but I'll repeat it again...there's fast and efficient paths...and then there's slow paths with the A+.

      The roadmap in my free eBook is what's going to be expected of you by employers, and that's what you should pursuit in the order provided. If you were to apply the CC to the roadmap it would be well before the actual starting point that I provide because it's not necessary and won't give you the foundation that you need...it's an introduction more than anything.

    whats the best site or program to use to run a homelab

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber Před 6 dny

      There are many options depending on your needs. -Hosting on your computer, I always recommend VMware Workstation Pro because it tends to be the most stable. -Using a Cloud Service Provider (or site as you called it): ----Digital Ocean ( jongood.com/affiliates/digitalocean/ ) ----Linode ( jongood.com/affiliates/linode/ ) ----AWS ----Azure AWS and Azure are potentially the most expensive, but they offer the most features. Digital Ocean and Linode tend to be more affordable and more friendly to homelab users who just want some cloud capabilities.

      You're welcome! Often, people don't have the proper expectations of a degree program due to a variety of reasons that aren't always self-imposed. Looking at the bigger picture for most people, having an affordable degree is always better than not having a degree when it comes to the job market...so don't be discouraged and learn as much as you can!

    What are non-technical jobs in Cyber Security consist of? Does GRC Analysis also need a technical background?

    • @JonGoodCyber
      @JonGoodCyber Před 8 dny

      What is your definition of non-technical? I'm asking because unfortunately there's a lot of misinformation out there about Cybersecurity and the idea that you can completely ignore technical knowledge, yet work in the career field. That said, there are certainly jobs where the technical barrier and ongoing requirements are significantly lower than others. Project Management and Sales (not sales engineering) are roles that can fall under or link to Cybersecurity, yet have a very low technical requirement. Something to remember though, is that there are candidates going for these roles that do have a technical background and that will make them a more competitive candidate. GRC is a LESS technical job than for example a SOC Analyst, but if you don't have a decent foundation of knowledge and at least a conceptual understanding of how things work, you won't be a very competitive job candidate and you certainly won't bring much value to an organization in improving their security posture. I highly recommend anybody trying to get into the career field follows the roadmap in my free eBook ( jongood.com/getstarted/ ) as that will give you a solid foundation and then you can dive deeper into a specialty area to become more competitive.
