  • Henry, Adventure Air owner and world famous sky diver, takes Tigre up for his first official lesson in an AutoGyro Cavalon gyroplane (aka gyrocopter).
    Flying out of Chino airport on a busy day, they head over to Chino Hills to practice climbing and descending turns, slow flight, rudder turns, and other maneuvers before heading back to land.

    Very informative. one question. Why is it OK to pull the stick all the way back at takeoff, but not at taxi speed?

      Great question: blade flap and asymetric lift on the rotor blades. At slower speed, the blades aren't stiff enough and if lift is asymmetric, they'll actually flex and sometimes enough to either cut the pusher prop and/or the vertical stabilizers.
      When it's rotating at takeoff speed and flying speed, the centrifugal force stiffens the rotor blades and keeps them clear of the tail and prop.
      At least, that's how I remember it b/c it's been a few weeks since we've focused on these due to a home sale and client jet flights.

      @@PersonalWings Thanks! I fly trikes and it seems all the trike pilots are moving to gyros. My biggest concern is there is no BRS in them. I love the fact that they go up in higher winds though.

      @@tomo0008 Gyro is The only way to go man. I moved to gyros from powered paragliders and don't regret a single bit. In thermals you just feel like fish in the water. Perfect !!

      Trikes aren’t three axis, so I’d fly a gyro any day. Seriously thinking about moving from ultralight (Beaver RX) to a gyro.

      @@tomo0008 Why are Trike owners moving away from them I read that some say they don't like flying them in turbulent air. I can't really get a straight answer is it a fear of overstressing the wing on a trike, or just uncomfortable to fly. Gyros accident rate isn't exactly low that's why can't get affordable insurance. I have read some guys over on Rotary wing forum said they were quoted $7800 a year or about 10% cost of the gyro that was for experienced pilots. Some indicated they just go without insurance and take out a 2nd on their home for loan collateral so they are not forced to insure it as is the case with most financing. Sinking 80-120k into a gyro and not insure it seems foolish unless your good with risking the money. I guess figure if you total the gyro probably not going to be around anymore to worry about the loss of the investment. What I like about the gyro is the fact easy to trailer it no need for a hanger in my city hangers are 3 years wait list, or 1 hour drive to an airport outside the city.

    I have family in Hildesheim Germany where the Cavalon factory is located, so was lucky enough to fly as a passenger in one of their autogyros. This 915iS in this video is really sweet but for pure fun, their original tandem seating open cockpit model is a pure smile maker. It feels like one is riding a flying motorcycle. What a view! It's about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. 🙂

    Chino Prison doesn't generally like any aircraft flyovers. I always used to fly south before flying north with the 71 freeway. I miss flying in this area...

    For overdrive, while rolling you can unlock you rotor and turn the gyro until it aligns with the rotor. then lock again.

    Why Helicopters Are not replaced by this technology? Looks much safer than a helicopter.

      In some aspects they are safer, however the utility of a helicopter in other functions is greater, such as; hovering, spot landings in small areas, aerial work (lifting, power line work, etc.) makes them more useful. Gyrocopters are definitely fun and less expensive to operate.

      @@Lecon60 An autogyro would be nice, not quit as flexible as a helicopter (I've flown them in Alaska) but a lot less expensive to operate. Autogyro offers heated seats - perfect for Alaska!

    The majority of countries have the driver seated on the left side of ground vehicles.
    Airborne vehicles should be configured the same way, seated on the left side.
    The brain will like it.

    nice ! I have only recently come to know of Gyrocopters, but one thing I can't get over is the vibration, is it not possible for them to be more smooth or is just their nature ?

      From our limited experience, I think that is just the nature of a two-bladed aircraft. They are a little smoother in flight and some can be equpped with an autopilot that gives you time to remove your hand from the control stick. After a few flights you don't notice it very much. Have fun if you get a chance to fly them :)

    Do you think take off is the trickiest part for experienced fixed wing pilots to master. Seems like number of crashes of gyros on takeoff most were endorsement pilots who are new to gyrocopters.

      I'm certainly not an expert, however from what we have learned so far, the takeoff, and properly taxiing can be challenging for us fixed-wing pilots. I found the same thing with helicopters - the takeoff, hover, and landing. Once you are in the air it is easier. Not unlike when you first learned to fly airplanes. After teaching for 45 years, teaching someone how to fly the plane in the air is easy - the take off and landing is what is challenging! Probably why they have autoland in the commercial jets :)

    Are these aircraft covered under Sports Pilot’s licence or would you need a PPL ?

      You can fly them with either the Sport Pilot license or a Private/Commercial/ATP license . There are different qualifications needed for each one, including knowledge/practical tests, hours etc. The Sport Pilot is the easiest for more folks. Tigre and I will initially get the Sport Pilot, then migrate to a Commercial at some point.

    Curious as to how much cockpit room there is for a tall guy in one of these and if there if there is a gyrocopter varient that works well for taller pilots? I am 6'5in. A curse to be this tall as a pilot who loves all things that fly.

      Tigre is 6'6" and he basically maxes it out for room. Head isn't the issue, issue is leg length. If you have a taller torso than legs, then you're set. We had the seat as far aft as it would go.

      Yes, as well as the rest of the time. - then for takeoff you start the pre-rotator to start the rotor spinning. During flight it is not powered by the engine. There is great information, and a great course, at gyropedia.com that provides additional insight.

      All turbocharged engines use an intercooler of some type to help cool the incoming air. The turbo itself doesn't use the intercooler for cooling, however the compressed air is cooled for the intake.

      Depends on what you’re aiming for. A full private pilot license takes some time. If you already have a Private license and are a quick learner, you could solo with a rating addition in as little as five hours. Rich will get it faster as he just has more experience with rotorcraft, Tigre may take about 10-15 total hours for safety and proficiency. Maybe less, but quality training ensures a long life! 🤓

    In the runup checklist, what are Lane A & B?

      Lynne - as conventional aircraft engines have Left and Right Magnetos (and switches) the Rotax engines have Lane A and B. The Rotax engines are of course more sophisticated than magneto-ignition systems. The Lanes represent computers within the Engine Management Unit (EMU). In addition to having ignition coils (similar to cars) they have other electronic components that monitor sensors, etc. The engine system basically is a digital engine control. When you do the check, you are testing those systems under isolation.
      Others folks might chime in with a more detailed answer to your question, but this is a good summary.

      It is actually 23,000 Ft, a bit lower but very high. The new specs show a full take off power to 15,000 Ft, however the AFM shows a max 'demonstrated' atltude of 12,000 Ft. With all the various altitudes, it is hard to keep track.       William depending upon the gyro - the glide ratio is 3:1 with indicated airspeed of approximately 60 MPH (knots similar) in the Cavalon. Basically you have to be very close to where you want to land

      Marc aircraft turbos are primarily cooled by oil all the time. In aircraft engines the turbos are running continuously providing either enough air to be 'turbo-normalized' or 'turbocharged'.

      The external audio profile on Bluetooth is excellent. I think one of the reasons for any audio clarity is the FAA specifications may not have been developed by audiophiles! The ATC/intercom specs are determined by the TSO.

      It is a balance between size and performance, and the designers must not be very tall. All aircraft have design limits due to the regulations on weight, and I agree some are not comfortable, including some of the jets we fly. The Cavalon is one of the few Light Sport aircraft that we can fit in. Tigre is 6'5" and I'm 6'2".

      You autorotate. Autogyros basically always autorotate. Where an autorotation in helicopters is an abnormal event, for these it is standard operation. They don’t glide far, but don’t need to in order to one safely.

      The price varies by location, but if you plan for $250/hr that is a start. We recommend it even if you only do a demonstration flight to see if you like it, or perhaps a few demonstration flights :)

      @@456swagger Gyrocopters are real aircraft :) In fact one of the oldest, with the first flight in 1923! We are fortunate to fly a large variety of aircraft, over 400 representing 110 different models so far. The Gyros have got to be one of the most fun to fly!
