Greetings Georgie! Or is it Georgy? Could you please clarify the proper spelling of your first name some vid?
Just wanted to let you know that I like both your angry, passionate side and your calm, rational side equally. In the past you have gotten very visibly angered by the unrealistic expectations of the uninitiated to the conflict and it really highlights both your commitment to Ukrainian life and success (which was never in doubt), but that WE too should be getting angry, making noise, doing more in our comfortable democracies because Ukrainian lives are on the line. But you didn't do that in this video. You just calmly explained how hypocritical it is for Germany (or any NATO country not on the ground there) to critique Ukraine's military decisions. But you also explained the cold hard reality of fighting a war that largely relies on the support of outside powers; your very existence depends on satisfying the voters in said democratic patronage. Anywho, if Ukraine had fortifications as walled as this post, they'd be in good shape. 👌

It's very easy to criticize the counter offensive from the outside and as you correctly pointed out, NATO military doctrine is built on air superiority. Ukraine is punching far above its weight with one arm tied behind its back. If Ukraine had all the weapons that NATO has at present right from the start, the war would've been over already.

In ww2 it took the US and britan two and a half years to launch the normandy landings. Two years of bombing german supply lines/ cities/ infrastructure night and day. Expectations on Ukraines timeline to push Russia out of its territory is deeply impatient. Nato is used to fighting 3rd world guerillas for the last 70 years. RUSSIA IS A MODERN AND FIRST WOLD ARMY.

I heard Chuck Pfarffer in the Myria report podcast say that he wants to see a slower offensive by UA because "the slower the pace, the more successful the offensive with less casualties". UA does not have air superiority so UA must attrit all RU artillery first before moving forward. He also said UA is doing a fantastic job shaping the battlefield and that Gen. Zaluzhni is teaching a master class on how to fight a near peer without air superiority. It is NOT the speed that counts, it is about shaping the battlefield which takes a lot of time without air power. Anyone who rushes UA or is saying the counteroffensive failed is either a moron or Kremlin parrot. UA's actions are really a campaign, not a counteroffensive because there are a series of actions and operations. We need to stop comparing the Southern front to Kharkiv. Slava Ukraini

I 💯 agree. I believe ua should continue to shape the battlefield this yr and await it's air arm next yr.
I also believe that the west is very slow with its quantity of aid and needs to provide at least another 10 brigades of equipment, whilst maintaining the current.
Air defence numbers are woeful, good but small in number. Mine clearing equipment gotta be 500% more equipment.
100 km through prepared lines is no joke, even worse when the equipment numbers are low. Over supply them. Get the job done.

The issue with engineering vehicles and air supremacy go hand in hand. Engineering vehicles by the very nature of their job have to move slowly, making them prime targets for artillery and air attack. Given NATO air supremacy doctrine, they likely designed their engineering vehicles with the assumption that they would not be deployed until after air supremacy had been achieved over the area of deployment, so they are protected from enemy air and artillery attack.
Without air supremacy it is very hard to give the engineering vehicles the cover they need to do their job.

Well, in my talk with Dutch officers, they said the same as you do. They also said that the Ukrainian army is outperforming their expectations. Not in the sense of territory, but in the sense of efficient use of valuable assets (people and big guns, mainly). The Ukrainian losses are extremely low for an attacking force in open terrain without air cover. As a political scientist, I am more qualified (maybe) to talk about the "election cycle". I don't think that that is the case. The top politicians all say that they are in for the long haul if needed. Military industrial preparations in the west surely confirm that.

I think a big part of all this talk that the offensive isn't moving fast enough is because they're looking for a repeat of the big, sweeping offensive that liberated Kharkiv last year. Observers just need to realize that this kind of war, without either side in control of the sky, is much more likely to continue to be a drawn-out, grinding, attritional slog. Attacking an army using defense in depth tactics like the Russians are using is one of the most difficult things an army can be asked to do, probably right behind an amphibious landing. I think they're doing very well. If I ever catch myself starting to doubt the ability of the UAF I just remind myself that they weren't expected to last more than a couple weeks against the Russian forces when the full scale invasion started. When viewing it from that standpoint and considering how much they've accomplished I have confidence that they'll be victorious.

Thanks for clarifying about the tempo. I'm always annoyed when TV media channels switch sides as soon as either country makes a move. Of course I have my doubts about this war sometimes, but frankly they're more on a political level than about the frontlines. Seeing how western Europe passively looks at this without trying to help more is frustrating. It doesn't feel like they want this to be over, even though it's disrupting the economy on a global scale (not to mention diplomatic tension, putting many civilian lives at risk). At the very least Poland has the guts to stand their ground and ready themselves for worse, I still don't understand why we're still daydreaming about negotiating with a leader going for revenge and terror anyway...

Fantastic video, good insights. A point I've heard elsewhere is that with minefields, and the limited narrow cleared paths through them, Ukraine actually can only deploy a small fraction of its forces in offensive at any one time. Physically only so many troops and vehicles can fit into a given cleared path. Stack everyone up behind the advancing group, like a big traffic jam, and you become a giant sitting duck of a target for enemy artillery. By attacking in smaller groups along multiple points of the line, rather than one big concentrated push, UA actually is able to engage more of its forces than it could otherwise. But it does mean that any success in such small scale attacks won't dovetail into a large breakthroughs.

Ukraine doesn't have many minesweepers. This is compounded by their minesweepers being targeted by Russian helicopters. The helicopters are able to attack the minesweepers from long range and can remain out of range of any Ukraine return fire. This is a problem.

  • @carolwilliams8511

I think the offensive is going brilliantly. Speed is not possible because of lack of equipment needed and that is our fault not Ukraine's. Given the limitations I am well impressed with the steady and well planned progress. The AFU rocks. Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦💛💙

It’s like I keep saying: Russia’s had months to prepare fortified defenses and minefields, and their troop numbers have risen significantly since the Kharkiv and Kherson offensives. A more methodical approach was basically mandatory if Ukraine wanted any chance of success.
That said, are things moving a lot slower than expected? Yes.
Have there been setbacks that Ukraine’s had to deal with? Definitely.
Does that mean the offensive is going as terribly as pro-Kremlin keyboard warriors say it is? Uh, *NO.*

And wen we talk about NATO training there's a world of difference. These Ukrainian troops got a few weeks. Most of the troops going into Iraq had YEARS of that training including multiple rotations through our National Training Center where an elite mechanized infantry cadre which knows the terrain like the back of their hand kicks their ass to make them better.
