  • Goodman Split System has some Minor and Major Issues that were found. Got the unit back running so they could atleast have some AC but they no longer can use the heat strips because they have a Major electrical issue.

    I love watching you trying to apply the knowledge youve learned into all the actual real world situations. As a new tech it seems like nothing is ever as clear as they teach it or you read.

      @AB_HVAC 100% man. Ya never learn till ya get out there. You go through the systems properly to diagnose the issues and explain your thought process well. The tricky issues you come across are usually the ones that get me too 🤣

    Nice job on the approach when you get to the job. The walk around visual goes along way before bringing all the tools out. Great catch on the heaters and power wires. I always checked that heater, wires and feed breaker with new customers.. Caught this issue all the time. Heaters are usually dual KW, in other words 10K or 8k depending on the voltage feeding the AHU or Heater Block if seperate. 10k needs 6 gauge, so best to have 6 guage if using 8 or 10 kw. Always look at the nameplate of the heater. Wire and breaker sizes are important. Nameplate will give you breaker sizes or MOP(Maximum Overcurrent Protection) Whoever was there before did the right thing and pulled half the heat off. With the black and white wire you showed, looks like there was a 120v system in there or gas furnace. looked like 12 gauge. Enjoyed the vid.

    You should have cut the other breakers off first. You assumed liability for all of the other circuits being good.
    8 ga wire is good for 40 amps. The breaker will also need to be changed to a max 40a breaker in this case and only 5kw strips can be used.
    10kw (9.6kw actual) heat strips will pull 44 amps at 220V Than add a few amps for the fan. The minimum required wire size will be #6. In some jurisdictions the code requires the use of the 60degC rating which would require a #4 wire.

    Why couldn't you just disconnect the heat strip power wires in the AHU instead of all the control wires? Then theres no chance for the strips to run no matter how crazy the situation or how many buttons they press.

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  Před měsícem

      That's just it, I don't want them to for any reason because I don't think even just 5k strips can be handled on that 14/2 romex especially with blower motor running. So I made sure the heat pump couldn't activate defrost and the thermostat wouldn't turn on auxiliary heat.
      The plug in that air handler connects the heat strip kit area to the control board. If I just unplug it, it wouldn't work at all

    • @Mo4Honesty
      @Mo4Honesty Před měsícem

      @@AB_HVAC the heat strip coils don't have terminals?

    • @AB_HVAC
      @AB_HVAC  Před měsícem

      @Mo4Honesty well yeah those do. But I mean I'd rather disconnect the low voltage call rather than the high voltage. You take the blower panel off and just see the wires off and someone will think "well those need to be on the terminals" and then now they just place them back. But removing the W inside and out may get the gears turning in someone's head.
      Either way works thou
