For anyone still watching this. I recommend a program called portmaster by Safing. It's an application firewall with a ton of features and is pretty simple to use for the most part. I also suggest using something called O&O shutup10 to limit/disable telemetry and data collection on Windows systems. LibreWolf is a Firefox fork that I've been using for a while since Firefox has become slower over the last few months in my experience. Browser extensions like Ublock Origin, Privacy Badger and Decentraleyes are also amazing. Oh and Bitwarden for password management, I highly recommend it

I already use firefox (but strangely enough not for the reason you might be thinking... its so that my bookmarks syncronise across different platforms)
I also have pretty much all of the privacy settings in windows turned off, the ONLY exceptions being webcam and microphone, the reason for that is i have a desktop pc, and i can literally just unplug those devices when i dont need them (in fact, right now my PC doesnt even have a webcam or microphone connected, and even though i have a headset which has a mic, the headset has a mechanical switch to disable the mic, and i also have it connected to the audio device that i use, which doesnt even support a mic, let alone a headset mic)
I also have a KVM switch, the audio device i mentioned above is connected between the display and the KVM switch, the audio goes to it over HDMI
Once i eventually get a seperate PC for linux, and also a Mac Mini, then those will also be connected to the KVM switch (and i am planning on having things set up so that the webcam and mic are connected through the KVM switch, and then through a USB switcher thingy, which will act kind of like a hardware switch for the webcam and microphone
I wont be using a dual boot for 2 reasons:
1: the time when i put a dual boot on my current PC, after a while i found myself not wanting to use the linux install on it because i would have to reboot to switch operating systems
2: linux messed with the hardware clock, causing windows to not display the correct time, which actually resulted in me getting confused
EDIT: a list of software i use: Firefox, LibreOffice, VLC media player, OBS Studio
EDIT 2: just now when i tried to go into network settings, the settings app was crashing, so i had to reboot my PC to fix it
EDIT 3: I dont use any sort of encryption with my desktop computers (or the USB backup drives for the desktop computers)
I do remember something intresting from when i was at college, there was 1 single laptop with windows 10, which had Bitlocker on it
I do not know why that laptop had bitlocker on it, especially as none of the other laptops had bitlocker, but the funniest thing of all, was the bitlocker password was TAPED to the computer, i cant remember exactly what the password what it said, but i recall at the top of the slip of paper it said something like "remember and destroy"

Is there a privacy issue with microsoft office word/excel or is there a more private alternative such as free alternatives like Libre Office? Im worried switching to a free alternative software will have new privacy issues being "free" typically always comes with hurting your privacy.

It's pretty much a barebones and simplified version of Windows so there is no telemetry, unnecessary junk and bloatware the only downside I can think of is that it doesn't have the Microsoft Store but I've never needed anything from there personally.

Instead of removing the internal mic and webcam. Simply buy a jack jammer and a webcam cover, costs are like $5 in total and you keep your warranty. Could also do it for a free by taking some old headphones cut the jack off and duct tape the webcam. The real security concern is internal speakers, due to ultrasonic cross-device tracking, deanonymization and so on, but if you microphone jam all your devices, you should be okay.

Tip : in windows, most people assume that windows hello is biometrics, however you can use a windows pin. And again, microsoft is misleading : a microsoft pin is not a 4 digit number, but can be a password that can use any characters and up to 127 characters that lives on the TPM chip. It is very usual, especially in data recovery, to use a program that break open the standard windows password. However, I don't know anything that can break windows hello. Although windows is built such as the classic password is mandatory, I think it wouldn't bite to use a windows hello pin.

In my opinion win10 can get around medium security at os level, but it is very hard and not worth it, as if you have those skills you defo can get Linux. And if your getting a new laptop or pc I recommend getting one from a company you can get your preferred Distribution, like star lab, or laptop with linux for laptops, idk about any pc ones, my preferred distro is only used on them. And if you know how to install Linux but can’t do many of this but want medium-high security I recommend just using Linux, and if you cannot try your best till you get a new computer with Linux on it.

I recommend everyone interested in privacy to use Windows 10 AME. Its a lightweight version of Windows 10 with telemetry disabled, no auto OS updates and no bloatware at all. You can build it yourself following a guide that is availiable in the website or just download the ISO and flash it into your system using a USB and something like rufus.

    • @OmegaMusicYT
      @OmegaMusicYT Před 3 lety

Direct X12 games and Adobe Apps work flawlessly on the latest AME build but you will have to use an alternative to Microsoft Office like LibreOffice or Google Docs. It is still worth it, Ive been using it for gaming for the last year or so. Just use snappy driver installer for the drivers (there is no auto driver update on AME) and you are good to go. More secure, more private and it feels really really responsive and fast opening apps and browsing the web

I have to have a windows puter still, as only it or apple can talk to my stupid printer. Last month it completely locked itself down and won't connect online, apparently it's stuck in 'flightmode'. But it was the final straw, I shoved it in the corner and have ignored it, at some point I'll put linux on it I guess, when I can be arsed. I generally resent every second I spend on IT shit, so I'm not a fan of linux either.

this is impossible to make it really safe or fully private and for macs is it even worse because it emits BLE beacons that travel up to 15 meters and can be logged by every Bluetooth adapter near those devices and the beacon thing is also true for apple phones and tablets, i noticed that because i was near a lot off apple devices and wanted to pair my Pine64 PineTime to my Pine64 PinePhone and the Bluetooth discovery tool showed me a lot of mac addresses and those aren't shown on Android or IOS devices

You really dont need that on Linux.
You get most of the packages from a repository, so there are low chances of unwanted programs or spyware showing up. (even pwned software btw)

@@finnmonstar ah, yes, so using Spotify, for example, or any other closed-source software, is going to be okay on Linux somehow?
My point is that Linux needs permissions and not assume by default that you'd only put safe software on your computer, especially when you consider Apple and Google have it implemented in their operating systems... and they're out to get your data!

Why would anyone pay for an OS that is loaded with adware and lacks even basic security? I use Linux but not just because of its security but because I find it a lot less complicated than windows. I just bought a new laptop that came windows 10 pro. When I loaded it up I was faced with total information overload crappy icons everywhere and a mass of ads and junk news popping up all over the screen. It was like a visual nightmare.

Yes, and maybe those prospective Linux users just need their graphics cards and peripherals to work, and to access their work, which is stored on NTFS drives. So tired of distro hopping just to be disappointed again that the famed Linux support for graphics, NTFS, Bluetooth & other peripherals are just not ready for prime time. This is not the fault of Linux developers & community. They have made heroic efforts to improve Linux's usability for average computer users. This is the result of our society's decision to invest in corporations to build a wall of proprietary obfuscation and then pirate our data to make even more money throwing us to the wolves.
I don't know the solution, but it should not be up to individual users with nickle & dime contributions to fund Open Source. We need a society-wide mechanism for funding & supporting opensource development of both hardware and software, and legal and economic structures that favor the Open Source ethos, make data piracy as a business model illegal, and safeguard transparency and privacy. In our current political environment, I don't see that happening soon. :( Keep fighting the good fight.

Henry, thank u again, more great info from you as always. I'm concerned, please help, I saw a video on Windows Defender itself is apparently it's pretty good but from what I understand only when linked to the cloud and or when internet is turned on - did I misunderstand something. I am total newly with my 1st ever laptop purchase 1 week ago. I watched a VIDEO from - The PC SECURITY CHANNEL (Windows Defender vs Ransomware 2021). My interpretation thot on the vid , do I need to get a Microsoft email account and hook up to ONE DRIVE to make my Windows Defender better ??? AND , why would I need to turn off my internet on my new laptop/more to the point, I thought the point of antivirus or anti-malware would automatically kill and remove all viruses I don't like the idea of a couple of them sitting dormant on my laptop and then turning it off and on is that enough time for the internet to be off and they attack my laptop ??? I ALMOST FORGOT, do VPN's work on new WIFI 6 ? And wouldn't the new Microsoft Edge be better then Chromium?
