LS1 has to be one of the best engines ever made. 350hp and 30mpg, wow
And the LS engines are easy to work on and plenty of engine mods and forum help.
For an engine without 4-cylinder mode, that sure is impressive!
My old car had the L76 V8 with AFM. Every time the 4 cylinders kicked back in the instant fuel gauge would spike momentarily. This wouldn’t be such a problem but unless I was on a perfectly flat road it would shut off and turn back on all the time basically defeating the point of it. Add a small turbo with every thing else stock, then tune for eco.
Id like to see that,6-8psi just to cruise.
Yeah the right turbo setup can save fuel. Be really tricky on that motor though.
you wont get better mpg with a turbo the way you are thinking. Hes already running about as lean as physically possible with no boost and still able to maintain speed just fine. If you add any kind of boost you are adding more air. assuming you keep the same lean air fuel ratio you will still consume more fuel. The best way to increase efficiency is to consume the least amount of fuel possible. The best way to consume less fuel is to consume less air. The caveat is that you still have to make enough power to overcome drag. With this instance the engine makes enough power to overcome all the resistance of driving while also being at a very low RPM in the highest gear under a very lean AF ratio. So at least in this instance a turbo would make things worse.
@@TheDaltonmichaels what do you think is the better way to increase economy, the tuning they did on this corvette or a turbo with low boost?
Stupid. Turbo needs fuel, do youu think it runs on magic???

@@CalebBaker500 I didn't, but a previous owner definitely could have. Title history shows it had been around a few states and owners before I ended up with it (I had it about 6 years). @@RickBaconsAdventures Yes, but it still proves that there are ways to increase mpg, without sacrificing power. I would bet that the marginally higher NOx emissions from the lean burn are more than offset by the ~30% less fuel you’re burning vs factory
it is hard to tell, NOx are very temperature dependent
It would be interesting to see this run on a smog machine.
Finally someone who gets it!
For thisecstill wondering, you will have a higher percentage of NOx is the exhaust from lean burn, but you will have much less exhaust volume from burning a lot less fuel. NOx is measured by percentage basically, so less fuel burned means less pollution.
@@Broadpaw_Fox you are correct. However NOx emission doesn't behave linearly against temperature and AFR. meaning that even if you were using less fuel you could hypothetically still generate more NOx overall. that said running lean should decrease head temperature in my eyes, therefore reducing NOx.
Yeah, lean burn means higher temp, (and with more/remaining O2 on exhaust) means NOx appearing. Also this test should be duplicated in summer too to see how the car engine cooling system can handle this.
Really awesome to see the results in this real world test. I've done that drive (Dempster -> Tri-State -> IL22) hundreds of times going to and from college, and I don't even get 40mpg in a Camry! Well done

I worked with oils and fuel, that is an old Texaco brand and Chevrons LOWEST grade of oil, it is their bargin brand hence why Chevron don't even use their name on the labeling, it's to not muddie the water with their normal and higher level brandage. Additive packages in those qualitys of oil is slim to none, don't cheap out on oil is the blood of that machine! Also it's packaged like that because it's made for leased shitty fleet vehicles that cheap companys dump after 50k. The money they save on packaging is absolute Max $3-4 so if it's cheaper than that then I think you can put 2 and 2 together as big companies don't give out freebies, that's a lower quality product period. Don't misinform people, add your 2's!
agreed, but to would be nice to see stuff like M1 and Rotella T6 packaged like this!
I buy Mobile 1 0-20W by the gallon and quarts. Thanks for the tip on the oil in the big box.
The test was a bit unrealistic as I do not drive my Vette for mileage. The effective speed around here is 70+ in the interstate. I try and drive so I pass most cars and a few pass me.
This is something I’ve studied at length... I did almost this same thing with a Crx and an apexi safc. Your biggest friend is going to be a variable flow EGR system with some kind of cooler. I had planned to do this with an old motorcycle carb and a small heater core to cool off the flow. The extra co2 will cool the combustion process off and allow you to lean it out even more. Keep track of o2 and exhaust temp
Thats awesome! I had a 2002 WS6 Trans Am and I was able to get 28 mpg which I thought was pretty good. You blew that out of the water! So I sold that and got a 2005 CL55 AMG and got 20.2 mpg on my last 5 hour trip. Not good mpg's but there were some 100 to 140 runs when I passed some cars! Damn that thing is fun! Keep up the great videos!
I wonder how much a front splitter, rear diffuser, lighter wheels and a 205° thermostat would improve fuel economy further.
I really wanna see him take this further.
Actually front splitter and rear defuser create downforce which is bad for mpg, it pulls the car down deeper into the road which creates resistance and reduces mpg, but lighter wheels would help due to less rotating mass

Looking forward to see your results. Use the Pure Gas app.....P.S. Try the AMSOIL gas cleaner concentrate with the 100% gas....... : )

Wrong. It all depends on how the computer is programmed. Some vehicles fuel cut above a certain RPM when it knows the throttle is closed. Some sense if it is in gear and have a different fueling strategy for neutral. If you can get 40mpg in a v8 then we should be able to get 80mpg in a i4 or h4 😉
What's a h4?
Pretty impressive. I had a 2000 C5 with a manual and 3:42 gears. On the highway at 70 it got an easy 30-32 mpg.
Great job on this car. I'm as excited as you watching it. I'm can't squeeze anywhere near this with my Ford.
Holding your pee for the love of science just got you a like from me, salute.
Convert it to LPG fuel, then it should be economic
Very cool! Watched both vids, followed along with google maps, and had my calculator out!
Really cool videos, I have a 2013 GL450 wonder if you can make a video changing the breaks, or about the airsuspension fix, thanks for all your videos

Let me guess. Soap box derby clone?
I bet a twin turbo LS swap in a Bugatti would improve power, weight, mileage, and reduce the cost of an oil change from $20,000 to $100! The swap may not even cost $20,000!
James England plus the old engine is at least worth $200,000
James England why the hell would anyone ever do that
@Jack Doyle I would take an engine from a Vette and put it in a salvage title supercar, then take the engine from the supercar and put it in the vette
