    My favorite part about the raid is Sanji finally accepting help. He is the type of guy who will put himself in danger for others but he cannot afford to do the opposite. He used to put women in pedestals with his beliefs that women need to be protected. By shouting for help, he acknowledges that women (especially Robin) can hold their own. It even made Robin happy that Sanji put his faith on her.

      @WatanukiProductions Před 11 měsíci +3

      Sanji's character development has been so fantastic. He's always had this self sacrificing mentality born from his kindness combined with his lack of self worth. Giving up on his dream to devote his life to repaying Zeff. Giving himself up to Kuma so save Zoro. Giving himself up to Big Mom to save his crew. He's always trying to prove himself useful, always fearful of being a burden. If not for all the development during Whole Cake Island he wouldn't have been able to ask Robin for help. Not to mention later agonizing over the raid suit when led to believe he kicked a woman, asking himself what version of him would be more useful to Luffy. Ultimately deciding to limit himself so he would not become the type of man Zeff and by extension Sanji himself hates, even at the expense of being a burden to his crew.
      It all wonderfully parallels what Sanji said in Enis Lobby. "Everyone has things they can and cannot do. I'll do what you can't do, and you do what I can't do." He understood Usopp's feelings of uselessness better than anyone, and from the outside was able to see how important Usopp was to the crew this scene was Sanji finally seeing his own value to the crew. Finally letting a crewmate do what he can't without fearing he'll be cast aside for being worthless.
      Not to mention the beautiful character development for Robin, going from "I want to live!" to casually, "No thanks, I'd rather die."

      I love that you elaborated on Sanji acknowledging that women can hold their own. When I was reading that part, I knew that there was some kind of significance to that moment, but I wasn't sure what it was. Your explanation makes perfect sense and now I can truly appreciate that moment!

      While it's true that sanji thinks that women shouldn't be harmed and should be protected , sanji has never made a point or made it seem like he sees women beneath him or weak that they can't hold their own , cuz he knows they can or else it would've been inconsistent with his backstory with reiju being just as good as other brothers. His overprotectiveness for women just comes from his kindness that they showed him as a kid but he doesn't mistake them for weak. It's not that he didn't thaught Robin could hold her own but more so that she just doesn't want anyone to get involve because he screwed up again and especially when they can get hurt and ofc more so that it was Robin.

    Zoro might not be referring to Luffy as his best friend. He is probably refering to Kuina since his dream of becoming the greatest swordsman in the world was his promise to her.

    5:00 Shinobu didn't like doing it either, but at the end of the day it was Momo's choice to sacrifice his childhood for the good of his country. And to some degree, Oden saw it the same way. Neither Oden nor Momo saw leadership as a position of privilege. For them, at least at this point, to lead is to serve.
    With Oden you see it specially when he comes back from Laugh Tale, having matured and learned, but it's there to some degree since his exile. He didn't ask anything of the Scabbards even once, but at the moment of his death. He went to confront Orochi and Kaido alone, and he took it upon himself to dance for 5 years to save as many people as he could. When he realized he had been tricked, and decided to confront Kaido, he didn't ask anyone to join him, they all did it of their own accord. And the best example is during the execution, when everyone was telling him "we should be down there supporting you, not the other way around". As Daimyo and future Shogun, his duty was to make his people's life easier, meaning he was their first servant, and they were all his masters. And for a samurai, their duty to protect their master is the meaning of life itself.
    With Momo, he was forced to mature way faster than what his father did, because life decided to kick him in the balls from the get go. And during the raid he reached the same conclusion as Oden, his duty as a ruler was to be the first servant of Wano. His duty as a samurai was to protect his masters with everything he was. So he made the call, he asked to be aged, and Shinobu accepted his decision in the end and complied. Nobody believed what Momo did was good, they all took it as a sacrifice. Even Luffy still treated him as the same 8-y-o kid he still was, while telling him how cool it was that he was a massive dragon now, which surely helped minimize the trauma to some degree. But nobody celebrated his choice.
    I get you thinking he made the wrong choice, sure, but it was his choice regardless, and it was in character, within the philosophy espoused by his family and culture, and he even was told it was the wrong choice by Shinobu. He was presented with the alternative. Narratively, or just in any other aspect, tbf, there's absolutely nothing to criticize about it, beyond personally agreeing with Shinobu instead of Momo

    Here's an interesting fact: O-Tama is a Kurozumi. When you see her praying at her parents' graves, you can read the family name on them. This is easily missed and in fact it was "revealed" in a SBS and I kind of think that it was a missed opportunity to bring that up front in the story and be part of the closure between the Kurozumi and the Kozuki.

  • @deblag5992
    @deblag5992 Před 11 měsíci +6

    In response to the JoyBoy question at 19:35 When Luffy goes Gear 5, he is not "becoming" Nika or Joyboy. They put emphasis on that in chapter 1046. Zunesha is pleading that the feeling of Gear 5 definitely feels like Joyboy but that cut that off with Luffy proclaiming to Kaido (after being asked who he was) that he is Monkey D. Luffy. To better explain Luffy's fruit think back to Marineford when Sengoku used his buddha fruit. It's actually the same fruit as Luffy's. Hito Hito No Mi (Human Human Fruit). This fruit has different "models." Sengoku's is obviously buddha. Luffy's is Nika. All we know for sure right now is that in Gear 5, Luffy can utilize the full power of his fruit and that Joyboy had the same fruit. Or at least its super heavily implied. We don't know what that means as far as Joyboy's spirit or whatever being the devil fruit. Without spoilers, even as the story continues, we havent really gotten any concrete info on the transformation. Wano currently has the most exposition on this topic.

    • @deblag5992
      @deblag5992 Před 11 měsíci

      With that being said, the idea or theme of that transformation is that Luffy is free. Which is like his entire character. He can do all the goofy things he thinks up of in his head. He is the embodiment of freedom. So is he free because he's Joyboy or does being Joyboy make him free. I think both. I think the fruit was perfectly made for Luffy and his character.

    All your criticism are fair and was shared with some portions of the community. That said, I think the Anime at this portion really elevated some of the parts though. (which I feel like was not something that happened often) The animators really decided to make this part of the Manga a celebration of the series as a whole.
    As for Joyboy, I'm sure people have said it by now but we think he was one of the first users of the Gum Gum fruit. He was definitely the last one to awaken the Gum Gum fruit before Luffy. Meanwhile Nika is the name of the God they are supposed to turn into. Personally I thought all this stuff was kind of cool, the whole Nika and Joy Boy thing is supposed to be kind of a fusion based on an African/Afro-Caribean god mixed with aspects of a Japanese god (where the rubber aspect comes from), but the name "Nika" is a pun based on the sound effect for a snicker or laugh in Japan. I just thought that kind of history was very cool.

    Luffy seeing himself so much in momo with the cry baby tendecies is just such a great parallel, so heartwarming. All to top it off with him saying he looks at momo like a little brother. Also Im glad you gave wano a honest score because it was a controversial arc due to the somewhat rushed endings and multiple fake out deaths that really hinders the arc's potential. However, everything was still so enjoyable and gripping you can't really call it a bad arc just a good arc with flaws that prevent it from being perfect like some other OP arcs.

      You're joking right? Sanji with all that character progression in whole cake island, wano part 1&2 all to just ruin his character in the 3rd act. I think wano act 3 is the worst we've ever seen him.

    • @ibzinho1098
      @ibzinho1098 Před 11 měsíci

      @@dillonlewis146 I think his best moment was in act 1 when he fought page one and put on his raid suit without hesitating or thinking about his family. He was unselfish, swallowed his pride for the greater good and acted quickly to prevent raising suspicion about the upcoming war. Act 3 Sanji however was back to old selfish Sanji only caring about himself. After learning everything about wanos history and the importance of the war for the people there, he spent the entirety of the beginning of the war looking for a brothel to satisfy his urges. He went door to door looking for brothels whilst his alliance were trying to sneak in the enemy base and he was upset when he couldn't find one. Then after the war began, he felt the presence of a woman being manhandle and he ofcourse went to save her which is fine but he rushed in without using his observation haki because he was too focused on saving a woman and how that might benefit him later. That's why I do not agree when people say his observation haki is strong because Rayleigh said it requires complete concentration and Sanji cannot concentrate when it comes to women. Luffy and zoro would've never got caught in that situation. Lastly, his battle with queen again seemed more like an internal battle rather than for the greater good for wano. He just seemed like a selfish child in the middle of an important war throughout the entirety of act 3. People say it was character development? No oda keeps ruining his character and then later developing him to take him back to square 1. Sanji as a character is constantly going up and down throughout the entire anime whereas the rest of the straw hats have already been fleshed out (after 1000 episodes) hence why we don't focus on their characters too much anymore.

    Things I loved during this section:
    All of the strawhats especially Sanji/Zoro/Robin..fantastic character moments
    Momos full circle character devlopment(I actually loved the fact that he was forced to grow up,its tragically beautiful),
    Gear 5(the best transformation in shonen)
    More Worldbuilding i.e. pluton
    Buggy being an emperor lol
    Things I didnt like:
    Yamatos character..why did we spend so much time with her for her to not join the crew? It felt like she coudve been written out of the story (even though I love her interaction with Ace). I would've rather spent more time with the crew or the scabbards.
    Fake out Deaths and surprise actual deaths..i felt like kinemon should've died and the actual deaths of other characters that were off screened felt odd.
    Kaidos short backstory..kindve basic and lackluster. Wish we had more of it.
    The overall arc I would still have in my top 5-6. Extremely amazing peaks with not so great lows but the highs more often outshined the lows for me.

    Orochi thing made sense with background of his devil fruit, I would've liked it more if each of the samurai took a head, it was a perfect setup for it
    For Luffy, I think he died for real and was brought back by the power of mythical df
    Momo thing was just sad, yeah
    I agree about flashbacks, like Kaido's flashback was worse than Big Mom which was worse than Doflamingo. So we really didnt connect to Kaido as we did with Doffy, which is a shame as both Kaido and King have a really interesting premise for a backstory

    My big gripe with the final act of Wano is that Kaido's backstory felt so lackluster. There was so much depth to his character that was hinted at over and over, but just never really got explored. For me, that was a big reason that Act 3 didn't really stick the landing.
    Oh, and ending the act on Hiyori saying "Kurozumi were born to burn" left a bad taste in my mouth. The whole reason that Orochi became this horrible tyrant was because his clan was persecuted. So to have that persecution be reinforced by one of the "good guys" to end the arc felt pretty bad tonally.
    Either way, excited to listen to your thoughts, Amber! You're so close to catching up!

    Congrats to reaching the end of Wano! The anime has just finished adapting the Luffy vs Kaido fight. I recommend watching them!
    When I finished Wano, I wasn't a big fan of the fake-out deaths either and was actually surprised by the people who did supposedly die (not a fan of it because their deaths seemed brushed-off and without foreshadowings). I also didn't like adult Momo, but I kind of understand why they did it. Plus, I thought that both Strawhats and Scabbards had too little screen time and importance. Lastly, I was disappointed at how fast the "Post-arc" went by.
    However, big fan of G5 and the little moments we did get out of the strawhats especially the end where Robin gets to look around and of Luffy's declaration to protect Momo and Wano!
    All in all, Wano isn't my favorite arc, but I liked it nonetheless. I'm glad you liked it!

    Hey Amber how it been. I hope your day has been well. Congratulations on passing 6k Subscribers as well the Luffy sweater. But yes I really enjoyed the Wano arc. It was fun and amazing. I really enjoyed the fights. I like how Luffy, Zoro, Law and Kid vs Kaido and Big Mama fight. I like the fight where Zoro fought Kaido, and inflicted a wound on him. Robin vs Black Maria, Sanji vs Queen fight, Zoro vs King, Law & Kid vs Big Mama was some of the best fights. I can agree the fake out deaths can be annoying. And I would say is pretty much one of my biggest issue with One piece is the fake out deaths or the antagonist not being killed even tho i feel they deserve death or certain characters getting shocked or their head crush but they're somehow still alive. I feel some of the characters like Kin'emon should had died in the battle. Especially when the story is involving a war.
    You having issue with Momo turning older is something I seen lots of reviewers and some in the comment section didn't like. I really enjoyed Kaido backstory. As well King backstory as it very similar to Zoro on how both guys was saved by their captains in similar ways and how the two of them are the first mates of their respectable pirate crew. But as well fearing for Zoro when the Grim Reaper comes after him. Sanji Vinsmoke powers coming into play as it affected his mindset as he start to believe he was gonna turn into a monster like his brothers. And thinking that he hurt a woman because of his loss of memory only to find out it was Queen. And to be able to overcome his greatest fear. And him defeating Queen was an amazing moment.
    Luffy vs Kaido was a great fight. Luffy Gear 5 is so amazing. It really awesome to finally get Joyboy and the history of the Gum gum fruit. In which put everything in perspective that it's no longer a regular devil fruit. But a devil fruit that have a great history. Being it a Mythical Zoan Devil fruit very similar to Marco. I like how the Gear 5 fit the One Piece world with the wacky and cartoonish humor. I like how Luffy Gear 5 affect and changes the environment. If you're interested in the anime of Gear 5 it Episode1071. And seeing Luffy defeat Kaido was an satisfying moment. But anyway sorry for this being long I hope you have a lovely day. Stay safe, stay positive, stay blessed, take care and stay amazing Queen of the Pirates.

    Oda definitely overdid it with the fake deaths in Wano.
    Not that it's anything new (Pell, Bon Clay, etc.) but yeah, he OD'd on it this arc. If you're not going to kill a character then stop capping. I didn't even realize Izo and Ashura Doji were dead until they explicitly said it later on because I just assumed everything was a fakeout.

    I think my favorite moment in Wano was still Yasuie's death. That was the one scene that really hit me hard emotionally, Otoko trying to use the toad oil to save her dad was so hard to watch...
    Can't say there was anything in Act 3 that gave me the same level of emotional investment in what was happening. A lot of "cool" moments for sure. But that's not my favorite part of One Piece

    I love Wano however it is at the same time the longest arc and the most rushed arc in OP.
    I don´t think it can be denied that the ending of Wano was very rushed you can tell with how leisurely Oda wrote act 1 and 2 really taking his time setting up things like the red scabbards and Zoro´s backstory and his connection to Wano and Ryuma.
    But then in act 3 we barely get half a chapter about his childhood and completely skip Zoro visiting Ryuma´s grave and the two scabbards who die in the conflict barely get any focus on them so much so that a lot of people did not even realize they died until we saw the graves.
    Its a shame Oda basically had to sacrifice Wano so he could have more time to plan out the final saga of OP.

      Exactly! I think you nailed it. Wano was super long, yet it also felt rushed and crammed with information that I couldn't follow that well. However, I am assuming that that means that the final saga will be incredible!

      @@AmberAlise oh it is! If your not aware Oda took a 4 week break at the ending of Wano to sketch things out and the pacing and chapters since then have been incredible.

    correct me if i am wrong but sometimes i have the feeling like you step on the breaks a bit when you critize one piece. you add "but it wasnt that bad" or "i know i am being nitpicky" or "maybe its because i binged it". if you dont like smth it is fair for you just to say that its bad without a safe net. i think the community you created is not filled with psycho one piece fans that wont take any criticism.

    All your concerns with Wano are agreed upon my the majority of the community. Even the Momo turning older is a 50/50 for most so don't feel like your being too harsh/nit-picky. Congrats on nearly catching up though!

    The more I think about wano the less i like it, especially the parts after the Odin flashback. the only thing that i actually enjoyed in those parts was G5 luffy vs kaido. overall, it was a 5.5/10 arc for me.
    with that being said, I can't wait to see your reaction to the next arc.

    I agree with you the fake out deaths in this part was horrible. Kin and Kiku being alive after all of those emotion scenes only for them to be alive really just robbed me of any impact. I was reading this weekly and given Oda's track record I was already hesitant to believe they died so I was conflicted the whole time. So now when we find out they're still alive now I can't even feel anything for those moments on reread. The worst part is we had people who actually died Ashura and Izo, who got nothing and learning that they did pass away after the fact annoyed me more than anything.

    Quick correction: The best friend line from Zoro is a bit of a mistranslation, the line actually relates more to a old chum/pal. In that scene Zoro was actually referencing Kuina, seperate from his captain.
