Some people LOVE publicizing their personal life. I’ve worked with several females that told EVERYONE their business on dating guys from the job. I work with a female that tells everyone how she’s dating different guys from our job AND how she slept with the boss of the supervisors and he’s MARRIED 😕
I wondered how many folks kept private what ought to be private. For real. I even told someone that if t(ey publicized, it would ruin their relationship.

I used to see Oprah and Stedman all the time walking their dogs in Chicago with their bodyguard. You could sense there was love there btw them .

I've been with my partner for 14 years and we call each other husband and wife, even though we aren't married. Bf/gf just doesn't carry the weight of our relationship, and it's easy for people to understand. It's no one's business what papers you have or don't.

I am a full on believer that you can have a happy, loving relationship without being married. I get that just living together can be "common law" married but I have never seen the need to be married. Especially coming from a family where all but the grans got divorced at least once.
Neither one of my sisters or their partners (boyfriends) wanted to get married or have children. They have been together for decades and are happy and do not regret their choices. My cousin at the age of 25 had a vasectomy. He married a woman at the age of 40, she never wanted children either, and they are happy. Each to their own. Marriage doesn't guarantee you will stay together.

I have a cousin who's been 'engaged' forever, and at least one aunt who was over a decade in before they signed the marriage license.
marriage doesn't give u anything more than a paper... if someone wants to cheat it's going to do it having "the paper" or not....
If you call some of these ages you must not understand the meaning of time.
Why fix things that wasnt broken? whatver personal agreement they have is working and marriage could put a doubt and suspicion between each other. , but I believe there is somekind of law if a couple is with each other for 5 years theyre somewhat legally married im no lawyer but I guess theres a loophole in it.

That's awesome :) it may be smart though financially. My mom was with my stepdad for 22 yrs and they finally decided to get married. He passed before it happened leaving her with none of his benefits. It makes sense for insurance, etc. We just don't live in a normal, functioning, one income planet any longer in many places.

I don’t know what it is about signing that piece of paper or going through the wedding, but I have seen some friends (& celebs, for that matter) be the most loving & devoted couple for years & years…& then they officially get married & things fall apart months later. So _if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!_
I think some couples are just fine with what they have & they seem _pressured_ into planning a wedding just to satisfy their families. One of my good friends got married in March & she told me that she only agreed to it just so their respective parents don’t think they’re just “shacking up” 🤦🏻♀️ Just to give the impression that they’re a “proper couple”, they planned a very small wedding but then her mom got pissed that she only allowed her to invite 8 people- my friend is the oldest of 3 sisters & the two younger sisters have been married with kids for several years now, so why her Mom feels the need to invite the whole damn village is beyond me.
Honestly, common-law relationships are practically one step away from being “married”, so there is really no need to go through the motions of a ceremony & reception, save some money too.

Common law is not one step away unless you mean legally. It's making that commitment or being the wife or husband not girlfriend or boyfriend and also stating in front of God your intentions and vows.

It seems to me, you most likely have had a very close experience with a toxic relationship, complicated by the institution of marriage to do this. My only marriage was like this and very short lived. It also seems to shun that notion of controlling the relationship and being manipulative. Mistaking control for devotion being the heart of it.

I am with my boyfriend for almost 8 years. We did talk about getting married and actually got engaged at one time. But I am never brave enough or have faith enough to actually walk down the aisle.
It's not because I don't love him or don't think a marriage is important. Instead, it's actually because I love him so much that I don't want to sabotage our relationship, and I think a marriage is so important that I don't want any chance to ruin it.
I have seen many and enough marriage failures (including my own parents and everyone around me) that somehow I just have a gut feeling that it wouldn't work for me......
If you don’t feel comfortable marrying him, then don’t. I had neighbors together for 15 years with an 8 year old son! They married, big wedding. A year after, they divorced. After the divorce, he met a rich older woman. He left with the rich woman leaving his kid behind. After marriage, that family broke. Marriage is not always the answer to a happy ending so MORE POWER TO YOU

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were together for 12-13 years and had 6 kids. Then after they were married for 2 years, they were divorced. The time they fought in court after the divorce was much longer than the marriage itself. It’s so sad.
So somehow some relationships just became broken right after a wedding…

Sometimes you just don’t need the government involved in your love life.

People don't get married out of fear. They had bad relationships, or they grew up in broken homes, so they are reluctant to make a relationship official. If your partner ever gets sick or if your partner ever dies. Legally, it will be a battle. You can't make decisions if they have a life-threatening situation. If you have children, the majority of states don't have Father Safe laws (that's if the mother dies). I mean the commitment is already there! They are happily in love and they are committed to only eachother. People don't have to have a big wedding. They can have it simple and just have a judge unite them in his chambers secretly. Only they will ever know they are married. Alan Rickman got married to his long term girlfriend when he found out that he had terminal cancer. He finally felt how important it was to have that official title before he left this world into the next.
I don't think Winona can get married as she may already be legally married to Keanu reeves, it's a bit of a grey area as the wedding scene in Dracula was performed by a real priest

It’s literally just a contract. These couples have stayed together out of desire to do so, not a contract. Both are valid and you can’t say that anyone together for bc decades isn’t just as “married’ as anyone else.

I know four different couples who were together over twenty years. When each couple married, they separated within three years after tying the knot.. Marriage is a joke. Stay together because you adore each other. Grow together. And if you can't, then move on. So many long term marriage become 100% complacency. Staying together because you want to brag about being together for thirty years even though twenty of those years have been a misery? Give me a break. Life is too short. If people grow apart, let each other go. And you don't need the peer pressure of "saving your marriage" added to your stress. Better to live 50 years single than one year in a depressing marriage that tears you down and majes you miserable. It is an antiquated, obsolete institution. Ridiculous, absurd, unnecessary in this day and age.

My hat off to these very grounded individuals with their sensible ideas about marriage. I totally agree with their combined thoughts about commitment to each other and family. A piece of paper only has value if the commitment is there. Sadly, too many Hollywood people, especially the women, are in love the the marriage ceremony and not the marriage itself. These women spend millions creating their fantasy day, where they can dress up like a princess and be center of attention. Then life begins, and upon encountering the first hurdle, they fall apart and give up, because neither had genuine feelings of commitment in the first place. Then the messy divorces start. These case scenarios become especially painful, when children are involved. While a few long-term marriages exist in la-la-land, think most of tinsel-town is too shallow and self-centered to truly understand love and commitment to just one person, and therefore should avoid the piece of paper.

Marriage isn't just a piece of paper!! It's a vow made in front of God and witnesses. You are vowing to love each other till life ends! That is not just something on paper! God has blessed your union and has accepted your vows. If you are devoted to each other and are raising kids together---why not get married? If it has no more significance than a piece of paper, then why are you so against it??
Because it is their choice, and not everybody believes in religion or a God. Marriage is a legal document, nothing more. We have lots of people in my family that are not married, and do not have children by choice. They are giving and loving people.

I don't believe in marriage personally, it does something to people, it changes them. I also think that if you do choose to get married, they should have expiration dates, that way you can either choose to renew your vows you can of you can just walk away. I think that would stop a lot of domestic violence, cheating and just general unhappiness.
