Bird Photography - Using Water To Attract Birds - In The Field Vlog #1

- This week I photographed some beautiful birds at a watering hole on my property in North East Victoria, Australia. I am very fortunate to own a bush block that has regenerating habitat for wildlife including numerous species of birds, mammals and of course reptiles.
I have a few locations on the property where I provide water for the wildlife. It is very dry at the moment and we are in the middle of summer where it can often get over 40 degrees Celsius.
As a consequence I have a number of birds that come to drink. In this video I show how I setup a few branches for the birds to land on before drinking. This then allows me to sit in a blind and take photos of the birds.

DayFox - Lioness (Instrumental VLOG Version) by DayFox
I'm slowly going through your back catalogue. I can see how attractive some water would be in your situation. Here in Wales that just isn't going to cut it. I would probably have more success putting an umbrella out 😊
Thanks Robert, yes, I imagine it would be difficult in wet locations, we have had a very wet spring and I am not seeing the regular action as they have so many other locations to drink. Cheers, Duade
I appreciate that when you point up to the corner, there's actually a link there!
Thanks, I have to try and remember to put them up as it's easy to forget. Cheers, Duade 👍
You have your own land to photgraph. How awesome. U have to be so patients. They came. Yeahhh
Yes I am fortunate to live on land.👍
Great idea in the arid landscape, I love the diversity of birds you have there.
Thanks mate, yes it is nice to have a few different birds about. Cheers, Duade
Awesome video! love from India
Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it, Cheers, Duade
Another brilliant video by you. Thanks a lot.
Thanks Mick, I appreciate the feedback. Cheers, Duade
Nice work mate.
and thank you. Cheers, Duade
I really like these Field Vlogs, Duade.
Thanks, hopefully once our lockdowns end I will be able to get out into the field more. Cheers, Duade
I like the video format. Very enjoyable and informative. Well done, Duade
Thanks Craig, I'm glad you like the videos. Cheers. Duade
nice video, glad i found it, thanks so much.
Great work Duade, ripper video. I loved your initiative of carrying water to the little watering hole.
You may not remember me, but we met in the Warbies last winter. I was bushwalking with a g7x mk2.
I've been following your insta since that day.
I've subscribed here and am looking forward to seeing more of your videos. 👍👍
Thanks Robbie, yes I remember for sure, thanks for the follow and comment. We may run into each other again some day. 👍
Same as with Robert Lawrence below, also just discovered your channel and watching all videos. Same here in Belgium (except during dry summers like last year's). One thing I want to do though, is transfer our back yard into a bird paradise, but need ideas and time!
Great stuff mate!
Thanks mate, I appreciate it 👍
Well that was great! This is my first Wildlife channel subscription 😊. I’m keen to see more and already looking at that lenscoat blind 👍
Thank you very much Brett, I appreciate it. Yes the blind helps disguise the human form. You could also google chair blind which is another option. Have fun taking photos👍
Duade Paton I have a chair blind. But it’s a bit bulky and limited in heights you can get your camera from the ground.
Brett Mezen Yes that is the limitation for sure, blind is easier to travel with, as its light. It can get very hot though and be careful getting it on the ground as it has a habit of collecting sharp bits of grass etc😬
Must have some muscles to carry the buckets of water!
Also fabulous pictures, I am addicted to your photography ^o^
Thank you, I am glad you enjoy my photos👍
Great video Duade, always good to see techniques used by others and see local bird photographers working here. Looking forward to more videos. Where do you get those simple blinds.
Thanks Ruben, water is by far the easiest method to get good bird photos for sure. The blind was ordered from naturescapes in the US, they occasionally have free worldwide shipping. I am thinking of getting a chair blind as they are not as hot, but are more bulky to carry around. 👍
Excellent work buddy just subscribed 👍👍👍
Thank you, I appreciate it. 👍
I'm going to use a friend's backyard and don't have the luxury of a small pond like what you did so I bought a mini bird bath. Will mount some perches and see if I will be lucky.
Good luck Danny, it may take some time for the birds to come if they are not already visiting the bird bath. Cheers, Duade
Thanks for the video!! This is great! How long does it take the birds to find and regularly use these kind of water set ups?
G'day Carlos, it can take a little while depending on how hot and dry it is. Also what other water is available. Often if you can find a natural water source and wait for it to dry out, if you then put water there the birds will come. Starting with water in your backyard is also an option. Cheers, Duade 👍
Great video Duade. From the sound of your camera, it seems you are not suing the fastest continuous shooting mode on the MkIV (i.e. "High Speed Continuous"), but something slower. Which mode do you use ("Low Speed Continuous" or "Silent Continuous"? And, why do you use this slower shooting mode? Looking forward to more video's. Cheers, Wilson.
Hey Wilson, you are bang on, at that location I have it on silent continuous as the Red-rumps around here are very jumpy and I am trying to keep the noise to a minimum. I only use this mode for really flighty birds, otherwise its back on high speed. I guess this wont be an issue once mirrorless takes over :-) Cheers, Duade
In the beginning of your photography journey, how did you market yourself.
Hey where did you get that cover? Super cool!
G'day Carey, I got my blind from here store.naturescapes.net/photography-blind-for-capturing-wildlife-birds-lenshide-lightweight/ but they appear out of stock at the moment. Cheers, Duade
Hi. What is the camo drop called? I noticed it was see through.
G'day, google naturescapes blind. Cheers, Duade 👍
Just subscribed you did a great photography work
How you find this drinking spot !
Have you create it !
G'day Ali, it was a natural watering hole in the rock after rain. The birds use it naturally. I kept taking water tonite when it dried up. Cheers, Duade 👍
I’m going through almost all of you video and really appreciate them. At 9:36 who is Yan you refer to as I’d like to see his set up for perches etc. thanks
oops I’ve now found Jan 😆. Keep on birding !
What is the name of the camouflage hide?
Just an FYI.... the pair of Red-Brows at 4:59 shows the male on the left & female on the right, and the solo at 5:11 is a female
G'day, thanks for that, how do you differentiate them? Cheers, Duade
@@Duade The most reliable method is when a pair are together and difficult when in isolation. To differentiate, the males have a more 'bluer' or 'steel' colored chest where the female has duller 'grey' chest with a more 'buff' or 'brownish' tones into the belly. Also if the opportunity arises, the males will sing.
@@hamo4558 Thanks for that, will keep an eye out, Cheers, Duade
