  • PART TWO is at • Cecile Ousset LIVE - P... For the REAL STORY on this piece, click on morpheusatloppers.wordpress.co... The work is presented here in FULL - by POPULAR DEMAND! (The last two minutes alone, was and still is elsewhere on this channel).
Cecile was 55 when she gave this performance. The piece is not ideal for women players, due to the physical strength, power and stamina (not to mention stellar ABILITY) required to play it - but Cecile's extraordinary skill carried her through.
Now 74, she retired from playing in December 2006, with a bad back - but she continues to give an annual masterclass in Puycelsi, SW France.
The conductor, Rudolf Barshai, actually MET Prokofiev when he, Rudy, was a young man. He was 66 when he conducted this - and is still living and working today, at 85. [Update - 04/11/10: Rudolf passed away today. R.I.P.]
I would have loved to have met Prokofiev - but he died when I was only six months old.

Ms. Ousset is fantastic here. Both speed, POWER, and control are all very much to be heard with Gary Graffman, George Szell, Cleveland Orchestra (on CD along with the 1st piano concerto).. that is a fantastic recorded performance, too.

Fantastic! Such powerful playing with great inner authority of this "grand dame" of the piano. The orchestra plays very well together with the piano.

Une musicalité alliée à une virtuosité éblouissante

Pianist like her overshadowed by Argerich. How is she not more well known?

@mrpolaroid123 For me, this piece is one where both speed AND power are necessary to really PERFORM the piece. This is where many FAIL. They have ONE - but not the other. ("Speed is nothing without control"!)
My personal favourite interpretation is a Seventies studio recording by Michel Beroff and the Leipzig Gerwand Orchestra - but being audio only, I figured it would be unsuitable for CZcams (not to mention, likely to get me a STRIKE!)
But Ms Ousset is excellent, too - and we can SEE her!

You got me! When I put 'em up, all is fine. But when they surface on YT, the sync is VARIABLE. Reuploading doesn't help. I was particularly miffed when an original video I'd synched perfectly to the record the group was miming to was HALF A SECOND off. I've used the same equipment throughout, yet the sync varies from spot-on to that half-second. And THIS piece is around a quarter of a second out - particularly annoying, given its important content. Volume is another issue, but I'm running out of

Her sounds are monstrous above that orchestra. So strong, deep, round. What's rhw problem?

    Excellent performance.
Why is it so difficult to have the video and audio in sync on yourtube videos?

Complain all you want about tempi but have you really listened to the SOUNDS cecile makes? Have you heard her play Rachmaninoffn3?? She is phenomenal.

This is an excellent performance (but hella slow for my taste). but the best performance on disc imo is still Terrance Judd from the Tchaikovsky Competition.

@mrpolaroid123 Non!

Better then argerich, best version on youtube i think
