Not quite sure id call the big boy "proper" but it has to better suited for dirt than the R9T

How long of a trip have you taken on the tsr?

Longest I've done is over 350 km in a single day.
If you're planning to do a long distance trip, make sure to take the bike for a full service in the same week as you plan to depart. Make sure they check your chain, sprockets, tires and brakes. And make sure that you sprocket bolts are not worn down. Sprocket bolts have so far been the most frequently failing item, its a R100 part which can cost over R3000 in damages when they fail.
Remember that the service interval on the bike is only every 3000km, so a JHB-CPT trip will take up more than half that distance. Also remember that the TSR is geared for dirt roads, so you wont be able to cruise at 120 all the way on the open roads, increasing your travel time. You could ask your dealer to fit a smaller rear sprocket. This will allow you to travel at a higher top speed, with lower RPM (so you can cruise closer to 120) which may improve your fuel economy, but you will give up some acceleration and torque in the process. Lastly you'll want to carry an extra 4-6 litres of petrol with you (just in case) petrol stations along long distance routes are more conveniently placed for cars, which have bigger fuel tanks, last thing you want to do is get stuck over 50 km away from the closest petrol station
