The Secret to a Smooth Drybrush

- UPDATE: Brands may vary, but when you're shopping for a makeup brush for miniatures, look for the following brushes..."concealer brush, eyeshadow brush, and smudge brush." The two make up brushes are as follows: Smaller white handle = e.l.f concealer brush. Black larger makeup brush = e.l.f eyeshadow brush. Yep, I totally misspoke in the video. e.l.f did update a few products in 2020, so the current brushes may not look exactly like what they're currently selling.

This is my digital tip jar if you'd like to brighten my day. No monthly subscription or anything soul binding, just a way for people to show their appreciation and keep the paint flowing. Thanks everyone! - Hry
Video Summary:
- use a round, soft brush for round surfaces
- apply multiple different drybrush layers instead of a single white one
- reduce pressure while going brighter
Thanks a lot! ☺️
You are really good at making videos and armies! 😍 Thank you for sharing your creations and methods with the community.
Awesome video and an awesome mini! I'd love to see a whole video on everything you did for it. The base is incredible and I love the glow effect on the helmet!, keep at it :D
This is a great technique, thank you! I have a softer Army Painter flat tip drybrush that would still come out a bit "chalky" on surfaces such as capes. I'm certainly going to give the makeup brush a try in lieu of my current one.
Try to remove the first dub of paint from the brush using a solid textured surface instead of a paper towel. This will retain some minimum moisture in the brush and you will avoid the chalky effect.
I know this is an old video but wanted to pop in and say thanks! Not just about the tip of using make up brushes but your demonstration and explanation was very great. I’d love to see more content from you. I hope you did a layering video cause you left us hanging there!
Hey thanks very much! Sorry, to leave ya hanging 😅. I left out the layering since Warhammer TV and the Citade Paint App already have a video demonstrating layering, and this video was already getting a little longer than I intended.
Here's the link to the one by Warhammer TV:

Great tip! I just bought some today after watching the video. They worked great for some muscles I’m painting.👍🏻
safe to say you were way ahead of the game on this one!
great video, music not distracting, clear explanation, good photos, and efficient!
Thank you soo much for making this video. It was of great value!!!
Cool technique! I'll give it a shot!
If I may add try to remove the first dub of paint from the brush using a solid textured surface instead of a paper towel. This will retain some minimum moisture in the brush and you will avoid the chalky effect we sometimes get when we drybrush.
Fantastic video, my friend! I picked up some makeup brushes a while back for this very reason, though I never noticed that trey work way better on flat out curved surfaces until you said it! This was an excellent explanation and demonstration!

Thanks again, Darcy.
Great vid. Nice and easy to follow
This was amazingly helpful. Thank you!
Np Jonas! Glad you liked it 😀
Thanks for sharing, dry brushing is essential for painting statues and highlighting detail.
Most of my paintbrushes are bought at Ulta. Kolinsky nail brushes are $4 USD and are finer in point than most mini brushes for 5x the cost.
Awesome! Thanks for this!
I've been toying around with using drybrushing flat parts of my minis for faster transition highlighting and was thinking that a filbert brush might work well. They're very similar to the shape of the make up brushes, so I think I've got an experiment to conduct this weekend. Really glad I stumbled on this video!
Oh yeah I've actually used filbert brushes, and you are right they do work similarly. The only thing I caution is that the bristles are a bit longer than make up brushes so you run the risk of having obvious brush strokes. I've also noticed they seem to absorb more water so make sure your brush is as dry as possible after you wash it out. I couldn't make filbert brushes work to my liking, but that doesn't mean it will be the same for you. Let me know how it goes!
Yeah, I was wondering if they actually made filbert brushes small enough to use on a mini. I’ll probably pick up some makeup brushes to test out and then search for smaller filbert brushes (unless I really like the results I get from the makeup brushes) 👍
Great video! Not sure how I've been not seeing this before??? My experience with army painter dry brushing has been exactly as you described! Very frustrating! Thanks for the good advice!
More ladies with good tips! ❤️ great content! Subscribed 💪🏻
Hey thanks so much! Much appreciated ☺
this was awesome, I can't wait to see youur next videos!
Thank you, I didn't even consider make up brushes for dry brushing until seeing this. I've clearly been living under a very (chalky) rock!
This is just a total game changer for me, I wish this video would get bumped up higher! I bought some makeup brushes from Amazon...it's so amazing how smooth the dry brushing is!!! I'm painting larger minis these days, and chalky dry brushing was driving me nuts, and normal layering techniques take way too long on a large model. Thank you so much for this amazing advice!!
One quick question though: how do you care for the brushes after dry brushing? How long do the brushes end up lasting before they get too stiff?
This a very nice tip , I've always had trouble getting my cloaks, caps, flags and so on to look more fluid. .I haven't baught makeup brushes for myself since the 80's 😄
yup, these make-up brushes are awesome
Awesome drybrushing tutorial. Clear, explanation, well made video. I'll have to make a visit to the local make-up counter soon!
Thank you! Happy to hear that! Don't get anything too expensive when you go. Look for the brand e.l.f brushes; they're short bristled and inexpensive.
Darcy Bono Creations Thanks!
Nicked that Idea of her ages ago 🤣, brilliant video again mistress of ice , can't wait til the next video please keep doing them 🤘
Jules_paints_40 K Jules you charmer! Thanks for the support man. The only downside is the more videos I do, the less I can actually paint :P
Subbed and looking forward to future videos!
Thank you
I found a make up brush in a poundshop shop and tried this on my dnd character and it worked really well.
Excellent! Glad to hear it :)
Thanks for the tip! I have a set of makeup brushes so I can use these for my Clay Cyanide Greek gods and spartan 3d printed minis :D will make Ares Cape look dope
Great video, good call on the different surfaces require different types of drybrushes. Now to raid my wife's make-up stuff.
That settles it - off to the drugstore today. These will make powered armor much easier too!
Yep, especially on the shoulders! I recommend e.l.f brushes, they're really cheap and usually at drugstores.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I picked up some comparable Rite-Aid brand but I do see that they carry those.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Just stopping back to say that they have made an amazing improvement to my technique. I'm able to drybrush my rank-and-file guys and they still look great. The characters still get layers and glazes but they look good next to each other. The old way, drybrushed guys stuck out next to a more nicely-painted model. You've really sped up the time it takes me to finish a squad. Thanks so much!
I need to get some of these smaller ones was gonna order some on ebay but just not sure how expensive to go really. like really chap might be terrible. I have used goat hair mops and know they're next level, but I need smaller ones so I can apply this to more than vehicles and scenery. that small one you have seems like it would be perfect for doing actual minis.
The e.l.f. brand (the ones in this video) really have been the best out of all the ones I've tried. For only a $1 they hold up well and are the perfect size for smaller models.
Hey there Darcy could you share the metal paints used ? they look incredible!
Wow... need to steel some of my wives drybrushes :D
walmart and amazon have some great cheap sets. They are a GOD send
except for dry brushes, do you have a list or video where you state which brushes (brands and sizes) you use and what for e.g. layering, wet blending, etc. (dry brushing is obsolete as we've seen the choice for it in this video ;) )?
I’m really struggling to do dry brushing. I think maybe I’m letting the paint literally dry out though. 😊
Has anyone got any tips for the best way to clear coat over dry brushed plastic? I’m painting a plastic chess set and hope to have a smooth feel when completed? Thanks in advance for any info . Cheers
Your ogors look awesome, what paints you used for their color scheme?
Thanks! Sorry I painted them back in 2018 when I was getting back into the hobby so I don't remember 😅. It looks like Russ Grey then Drakenhoff Nightshade the highlighted back up with Russ Grey. Now that Contrasts exist, you can use Space Wolves Grey Contrast to get a similar color.
I'm painting my first Kharadron Overlords vessels. Will this technique with the makeup brushes work using metallic paints on the aether balloons?
For something that size you're going to want to stipple with a makeup brush (possibly even with a makeup sponge). It's a really similar technique to drybrushing. Take the same steps as drybrushing, not watered down paint, get most off your brushed, but then you're going to lightly jab the surface with the top of your brush. Since these brushes aren't made to hold a point, they're ideal for this. If its done correctly the pattern you get each brush stroke will look like a circle with the edges fading away. Repeating this step several times over a surface, you'll have an opaque pattern with any recesses still left dark. You can even try searching "stipple makeup tutorial" if there aren't any hobby ones, as this will give you an idea of the exact motion and result.
Darcy, in order to clean theese makeup-drybrush brushes, just as a normal brush, right?
Yep that's right! I just use Masters brush cleaner and they turn out fine. Make sure they're completely dry before you use them again though, otherwise the water absorbed in the bristles may cause a smear.
So, why does your paint go on smoothly? I have a makeup brush much the same and I put it on a space marine, much to my disappointment it has turned quite chalky. Yours looks smooth as heck!
Hmm, I would try cleaning your brush first with a brush cleaner like Makers. Chalkyness is usually caused by tiny dried paint flakes that remain in the bristles of the brush. The longer the dry brushing session the chalkier it will start to look. Just make sure to dry the cleaned brush thoroughly before using it again, otherwise it will smear.
Darcy Bono Creations thank you very much, will do!
I stood about 10 minutes in my supermarkets huge make-up section and I had no idea what I was looking at. I think I need some expert help on what to get. :) Is this an e.l.f concealer brush?
Holy crap you're right! I've had this up for years and never realized I had reversed the names 😬. The smaller one is an e.l.f concealer brush and tbe slightly larger black brush is an e.l.f eye shadow brush. I do know that e.l.f has changed what some of their brushes look like though so their eyeshadow brushes may now have white handles. Basically any brush that's rounded with short bristles (about 1/2 inch at most) will do the trick. So eyeshadow brushes, concealer brushes and smudge brushes.
I updated the description in the video to include this info. Thank you so much for helping improve the channel.
@@DarcyBonoCreations Thank you very much for the info! I'll go on another adventure now that I know what I'm looking for. :)
Ok hold on I thought this was a new video how did this slip by me
Also can you do more realistic layering/better transition colors (hopefully you know what I mean...)
Awesome my other half is gonna hate me ! Cheers lol
Nic Tomlin Haha. Just tell her it gives her an excuse to buy some new ones ;)
Darcy Bono Creations ahhhh yes that could work lol off shopping tomorrow 😉 lol
