Headphone Repair No Solder (Easy)

  • Hi!
This is another installment in my headphone repair series. This tutorial shows how to replace the typical TRS 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) plugs, which are the headphone plugs most headsets use. However, I use a plug that requires NO SOLDERING! This makes repairing them a lot easier. Simply use the screws to secure the wires.
Here is a link to the RadioShack website so you could purchase the plug:

Any questions, please ask. I check my comments often.
    Thanks for watching!

Good job Rich, through your very clear instructions I repaired my Bose headset. I contacted 6 places to do the repair and out of desperation I went to Radio Shack as you suggested. They work great again. Thanks.

    Mr. Rich,
Just to give you an idea of who is addressing you, my name is Harrison, and I'm a 22 year old student at the University of Alabama.
I have a set of relatively simple, but good quality Logitech speakers. The auxiliary input had been getting worse over time, in terms of connection. Eventually it, and in turn the speakers, became nearly useless. Thanks to your easy and descriptive instructions, I managed to cut the wires' imperfections out and reinstall a new jack - and for much cheaper than buying a new set.
The speakers work like new, and I just wanted to give you some credit for the help! Your video is much appreciated.

Thanks for making and sharing this awesome video! I paid quite a bit of money to get my westone earphones fixed but the guy used the wrong jack size (a fraction smaller than 3.5 mm) so my earphones never connected properly. Thanks to this video, I can go ahead and get them fixed on my own!

EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!..... LOVE how you explained what all the parts are in both the wire and the plug AND went through all the steps in great detail. I'm so happy that I came across your website....I have a pair of fairly expensive ($160) Sony earbuds and I damaged the plug when it dropped into the elliptical machine. I called Sony to see if they repaired them and they don't, so I was thrilled to learn that I can fix them myself for less than $10.00!!! Thank you!!

Good tutorial. Only thing I'd say that I learned the hard way is that you have to carefully measure how much wire you are going to strip and ultimately twist. Each one is a different length and if you end up w/ excess wire/slack from one wire as i did (in my case ground), the longer wire will touch another. In my case the ground was crowding the others when i tried to put the insulator on and as a result both channels came in super weak. So, moral of the story, measure twice cut once.

Don't forget to make a loop in the wire somewhere close to where the housing would end. That'll prevent you from tearing the wires should you pull on the cable.

I was tired of buying new computer speakers whenever the plug went bad, so I was drawn to a solution that did not involve soldering. When trying this, I had to think a bit when my exposed wires didn't match exactly. I had a green and a white (?) wire and a bunch of "silver" colored wires that I thought was the "fluff." Turns out that it was not fluff, but the ground wires.
The configuration that worked for me was to let the green wire be the Green one and assume the white wire to be analagous to the Red one. When I used the disparate silver wires as ground, it worked! Thank you so much for helping me do this.

Just wasted an hour of my life finding out the hard way that for my situation:
-the red wire was the ground(to connect to the screw furthest from the jack)
-the blue wire was the left ear (to connect to the screw closest to the jack)
-& the green wire was the right ear (to connect to the middle screw)
So again, left ear is short screw, right ear is the adjacent middle length screw, & the ground is the longest lowest screw furthest from the jack & positioned between the parallel left & right screws.
note: I rely on my tried & true pc's realtek stereo test to get this right(using my wireless headphones plugged in & placed on my head like it was just before the problem occurred & I always wear my headphones on the proper ear). Also Ive re-used this product for years now.
Keep in mind the colors were weird for me because I bought a cheap headphone cable from overseas so if you find something similar, here's your tip. For most my typical headphones, I do it using the method in the video exactly as he explained but this one was odd.
edit: I just wasted another hour figuring out something was still wrong....its normally alot simpler when the wires are like the one in the video opposed to what I have. I tried every combination & Ive recut & cleaned & done it again & again but something is always off in the stereo. Its like one ear is stereo & the other ear is always mono or partially stereo. i fuckin hate this shit lol.

TechNerd01 Your username is misleading. I do a lot of electrical work I'm going to assume audio is the same in the sense that green is a ground wire. meaning it would be tied in with the copper.

    • @Texplanations
      @Texplanations Před 7 lety

The thing is in my country green is NOT ground... There's no green colorcode. Instead there is yellow for ground.

If green goes to the tip, then it is likely left audio.

Eli Hopf yes. I watched the entire video in hopes he didn't really just burn/oxidize his ground and didn't flux or remove that junk... If this were a solder job he would have realized his mistake.

We wouldn't need to do this if the cheap manufactures in China would make quality products.

Great video. I was going to throw out my old headphones because the plug broke. I tried splicing in a plug from another old set of headphones but it didn't work and I made a mess because I tried to strip the coloured "enamel" off, not knowing what it was tbh I didn't know I should burn it. I will definitely be keeping my headphones and will try again to repair them. Thanks.

Hey guys, just in case you DONT have a radioshack near you (lol) or you have a spare AUX cord laying around and that's more convenient, you can do this same thing by just cutting both heads and connecting the wires, and then solder/electrical tape them back together. I just did it that way and it worked great.

I have a set of Logitech Speakers with that green 3.5mm plug...And it unfortunately somehow got bent :( So I have to replace it. Doesn't work and bypassing adds a buzzing....
So I really want to try this! thanks again. Yay for easy assembly, sturdy and no soldering!!
