Arizona Atheist Lawmaker Stands Up To Christian Bully

- On Monday, February 11, Arizona State Rep. Athena Salman - an openly atheist lawmaker - delivered a secular and inclusive invocation to start the legislative session. Afterward, Republican State Rep. John Kavanagh asked to speak and used his time to mock Salman's invocation by introducing his special guest "God."
Rep. Salman did not back down. The next day she rose to protest the denigration and belittlement of her invocation, calling attention to the mockery of nonreligious people that has become routine in the Arizona state legislature.
We want to applaud Rep. Salman for her courage and determination. Atheists, agnostics, humanists, and nonreligious Americans have every right to serve as lawmakers and be afforded the same recognition and respect as their peers.

"How can I not go to hell?"
Answer: Not going to hell is easier than you think. Some people believe they have to obey the Ten Commandments for their entire lives to not go to hell. Some people believe they must observe certain rites and rituals in order to not go to hell. Some people believe there is no way we can know for sure whether or not we will go to hell. None of these views are correct. The Bible is very clear on how a person can avoid going to hell after death.
The Bible describes hell as a terrifying and horrible place. Hell is described as “eternal fire” (Matthew 25:41), “unquenchable fire” (Matthew 3:12), “shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:2), a place where “the fire is not quenched” (Mark 9:44-49), and “everlasting destruction” (2 Thessalonians 1:9). Revelation 20:10 describes hell as a “lake of burning sulfur” where the wicked are “tormented day and night forever and ever.” Obviously, hell is a place we should avoid.
Why does hell even exist, and why does God send some people there? The Bible tells us that God “prepared” hell for the devil and the fallen angels after they rebelled against Him (Matthew 25:41). Those who refuse God’s offer of forgiveness will suffer the same eternal destiny of the devil and the fallen angels. Why is hell necessary? All sin is ultimately against God (Psalm 51:4), and since God is an infinite and eternal being, only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient. Hell is the place where God’s holy and righteous demands of justice are carried out. Hell is where God condemns sin and all those who reject Him. The Bible makes it clear that we have all sinned (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:10-23), so, as a result, we all deserve to go to hell.
So, how can we not go to hell? Since only an infinite and eternal penalty is sufficient, an infinite and eternal price must be paid. God became a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ (John 1:1, 14). In Jesus Christ, God lived among us, taught us, and healed us-but those things were not His ultimate mission. God became a human being so that He could die for us. Jesus, God in human form, died on the cross. As God, His death was infinite and eternal in value, paying the full price for sin (1 John 2:2). God invites us to receive Jesus Christ as Savior, accepting His death as the full and just payment for our sins. God promises that anyone who believes in Jesus (John 3:16), trusting Him alone as the Savior (John 14:6), will be saved, i.e., not go to hell.
God does not want anyone to go to hell (2 Peter 3:9). That is why God made the ultimate, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice on our behalf. If you want to not go to hell, receive Jesus as your Savior. It is as simple as that. Tell God that you recognize that you are a sinner and that you deserve to go to hell. Declare to God that you are trusting in Jesus Christ as your Savior. Thank God for providing for your salvation and deliverance from hell. Simple faith, trusting in Jesus Christ as the Savior, is how you can avoid going to hell!

@@rainiparker2569 Free will is not an excuse to abuse or allow abuse. Same goes for gods. Nobody has a problem with police or citizens intervening to stop gross abuse of the innocent. No body shouts "Don't stop him, otherwise you are compromising the rapists free will". Are you kidding me.
@@rodbrewster4629 I wish I had all the answers, but sadly, none of us do. It all depends on each individuals belief system. Do I believe I have a soul? Yes. Was it given to me by God? Yes. Do I control my own soul? Yes. Are souls, new or old, complete? I don't believe so. I believe we never stop learning or progressing throughout life or even past death. As for the free will of a victim being violated, I have to say that the word "victim" is not only over-used, but questionable in origin. "Victim" is by origin "victima", Latin for "sacrificial animal". Unless we're talking about animals, a human victim always has a choice. If we're talking about a child victims, it is the parent's responsibilty to protect their child until a time when the child can protect itself. I believe the majority of the masses make too many excuses against responsibility for self & blaming others for their own wrong, crappy decisions. Most bad situations can be prevented, as long as nature is not involved. I could go on & on, but as I stated earlier, neither you, nor I, have all the answers, just beliefs. Each to his own. @@anunknownentity1637 I would. I used to be Christian, then I turned seven.... what would you like to discuss?
@@Gk2003m so what was it that led you away from Christianiy
@@anunknownentity1637 Reason and reality. I did not replace that religion with any other. A question for you: do you need to go to church/synagogue/mosque constantly to get your belief in gravity reinforced, else you float away off the planet? Of course not. You are aware of a force from the moment you emerge from the womb. It keeps you crawling for many months, then it knocks you down as you learn to walk. Then it penalizes you every time your toddler hands lose their grip on a glass of milk or a fork or a sandwich, and that thing you were holding falls on the table of floor and it spills or breaks.
At a certain age, you learn that force has a name: gravity. A little later, you learn the mathematics of the force called gravity.
But you never ever have to have a teacher convince you it exists. And every culture knows of this force called gravity, and in every culture the mathematics of it remain identical
If god actually existed, no one would have to convince you of it. You would not have to go to church every week to have your belief in it reinforced. It would be this unmistakable presence. It might have different names in the varied languages, but its essence would be identical and demonstrable across every culture. Its effects would likewise be universal.
Instead, even within Christianity, the Methodists can’t agree with the Adventists or the Presbyterians about exactly what god is.
And there are tens of thousands of religions. If there are such differences, then not only are all but one necessarily wrong.... all are necessarily wrong.
This all became obvious to me at age seven, as I sat in the pews and in my weekly religious instruction class. Understand that from birth til then, I had the cross above my bed and believed and prayed frequently. But it all collapsed once my ability to think really took hold.
@@Gk2003m Hello, I'm glad you responded so now I'll make my response.
You started by claiming that if God exists he would be as evident as gravity.
Now ignoring this has no actual backing at all and is purely opinion, I'll bite. You used the example of gravity, which is odd as it helps me more than you may have anticipated. God, like gravity, is something you don't see. Yet Gods existence, like gravity, is abundantly obvious. in the book titled "Why God won't go away" alot of research is brought to the forefront regarding theistic beliefs. Something interesting is that infants and young children have theistic tendencies. Similar to gravity, most people are born with a favor towards a theistic perception of reality.
You said every culture knows about gravity and you don't need a teacher to tell you about it.
Sorry but this seems like a bit of a stretch. Are you unironically saying that most cultures have a better understanding of gravity as opposed to a belief in God? Even the most primitive cultures tend to hold to some sort of supernatural beliefs.
Now you asked do I have to go to a church to reinforce my belief in gravity.
The answer is no and the same goes for God. There have been times where I've gone on long hiatuses from church, yet I didn't stop believing in Gods existence. In fact, I have gained more confidence in the proposition of Christian theism outside the church rather than in. I think you mistake why I, and many others go to church. It's not so we can get in our echo chamber and reaffirm our beliefs. We can do that online at anytime. We don't have to wake up early on Sundays to reaffirm our presuppositions. Most Christians, such as myself, go because we receive a great amount of pleasure in worshipping our God and everything He has done for us. I know this is starting to sound like a sermon but I needed to point out your flaws regarding why many go to church at all.
Now as for your claims about thousands of religions. While there are a lot of religions out there are only a select few that have any respectable following. Sure when you say thousands of God's exist that may be true but most people today don't put their faith in the Greek or Norse pantheon. I mean I haven't even talked about polytheism which if you have thousands of God and one polytheistic religion then you can always say well there are thousands of Gods. Your statements that because there are so many differences regarding views on God it means that they are all necessarily wrong does not follow and I ask you to provide evidence for this. Your an atheist, you like science right. Would it shock you if I told you that often times scientists have very different views on how to explain something. I would also point out that I find the evidence for most of these religions rather unconvincing.
So now that you have established that you rejected theism at age seven, I would ask you if it is possible that I could convince you to reconvert to Christianity. I care about your soul and even if you think religion is pure nonsense you must understand that from the perspective of the religious person there is no more important thing to do than help others.
I believe there are good reasons to believe Christianitys is true. I also believe kids are raised in Christian homes that have a rather mythical theology that causes them to reject nonsense. Nonsense like a young earth, a global flood, dinosaurs living with man. I see people being given ridiculous views on science and theology that, unsurprisingly, causes a significant number of them to reject the absurdities they where taught.
I couldn't help but laugh when he called on his imaginary guest because it was so ridiculous. He was so confident and smug about it, completely oblivious to his delusion. He doesn't realize that a person of a different faith could make a mockery of his belief just as easily.
What's crazier is that if he would've referred to any Greek God or Zues or the Flying Spaghetti Monster, he probably would have been removed from the room and sent off for "evaluation".
"His delusion" Are you sure about that? Really? No, it is your delusion. Face it.
@@hugemonkeyballs A delusion is believing in something that has never been proven or in spite of contrary evidence, so yes I'm sure. Not believing in something that has never been proven is not a delusion. Do you believe that the Gods of other religions are real or just yours? Jocelyn - can't reply on original comment thread.
I love seeing politicians defending the state and federal constitutions.
@Phillip Hickman The Arizona Constitution was written in 1910. Very few were educated enough to doubt the 'established' religions. Perhaps if we wish to revert to that standard, we should also do away with vehicles and revert to horses for personal and commercial transportation. Perhaps we should do away with electrical connections for homes. Certainly we should do away with radio, television, and cell phones. As she read aloud - just because it's been around for a long time does not make it valid or worthy of superior respect.
See how easy it is to repeat the same thing? That alone does not make it more valid.
@Nathan El Lovely to see you resorting to name-calling and ignorance. Usually takes theists longer than one or two comments before they run out of word salad and sink this low.
@Phillip Hickman Older than that? I am not sure why you are referring to the US constitution - this problem arose from someone quoting the preamble to the Arizona constitution - which, according to the Arizona website, was written in 1910 and officially adopted in 1911. Arizona was the last state to join in 1912. You are not missing some understanding of written material or historical fact, are you?
@Nathan El Name calling is just the resort of the weak-minded, or those who have nothing of factual body to add to the discussion.
Throwing in the name of 'cultural hegemony', though terribly misused, only indicates that you dropped out of a Community College course in some Social Science before completion, since it has no bearing on the current discussion.
@Nathan El The US constitution is irrelevant in this context, since we/I was rebutting Phillip Hickman's note stating that this position giving credence to theists was embodied in the constitution of Arizona - the jurisdiction under consideration in this discussion.
Just because others have done it, and it has been around a long time, the use of personal insults and derogatory comments do nothing to enhance your credibility. Baseless insults remain ignorant and irrelevant.
You apparently decided I am an Atheist, based on my correction of Phillip's constitutional preamble, while I never mentioned any belief or lack thereof in theist philosophy. Interesting conclusion for you to jump to.
Much like your constant comparison of each thought or idea to a 'communist' link. Perhaps you are still in the McCarthy era, and there are Reds in every closet. Or perhaps just your closet.
Since you can apparently not find it in your mind - or soul, if you prefer - to be polite enough to respect those to whom you are speaking, you are not worthy of debate. Children learn more about discussion than to throw insults: remember Stick and Stones? You should.
PS - I would not even consider taking part in what you refer to as an 'argument'. And argument is a battle of sorts. I prefer 'discussions', in which, through mutual respect and intelligent information, all participants get to learn, and perhaps to change or adapt their personal positions. Probably a cultural thing.

That is Biblical repentance.
Phillip, the Preamble may say this because of those in power push their religion on others - otherwise nobody would be following your religion. Folks like this think that their "god's law" trumps "man's law" and therefore any action taken to "defend" their religion (i.e. stepping on any other perceived competing belief system) is perfectly hunky dory. Then if they are held accountable for their actions under the law, they get to pull the religious persecution card. In other words, not allowing them to persecute other religions is religious persecution.

I think what he believes is nonsense but he can say it as much as he wants as long as he doesn't belittle me for my beliefs or that woman beliefs.
Get a grip lady and save your energy for someone who deserves it.
Well what the hell did you expect of a Christian, tolerance?
Wow! Thank you for sharing this inspiring moment. It is time all of us stand up for our rights and support each other. We are not alone! The "None" are becoming a majority while membership in religious affiliation is shrinking.
No no =3 No religion =3
I have a personal relationship with the Flying Spaghetti Monster... =3
As a non monotheistic spiritual person I want you to know that atheists are not alone in their plight. I have been told that I worship Satan just because I choose a path that sees nature as the creator. I have scars on my body that are from people of monotheistic faiths attempting to carry out their "stoning of a witch". The strongest maxim of my path is that EVERYONE has the right to walk their own path, because all paths, walked correctly, lead to the same place. I enjoy listening to atheist folks talk about their thought process, and I listen to monotheistic folks as well, as long as they are the ones who are respectful about me having a different view then they do and don't constantly tell me about how "you are going to hell and taking your children with you." All ideologies are sacred to the person who holds them, and none should be looked down upon. But what people forget all too often is that your rights as a person end where another person's rights begin. Stay strong, be who YOU are, and remember you are just as worthy to speak as anyone else! 💕
@@louseveryann2181 Is that the marinara or pesto monster?
@Rob Lowe I doubt any atheists want to rule qua atheist. Liberal, conservative, whig, tory, sure.
@@dawnmidnightsun2521 Thank you for sharing your experience. Might I suggest you look for the polytheist pagans? They are a breath of fresh air. Not just Hindi, but Norse, Egyptian, Wicca etc.
