    As a hip hop producer...the MC 707 has become the centerpiece of my production suite. I've always favored the groovebox workflow. This machine is 🔥

  • @corduroyinstitute
    @corduroyinstitute Před 3 lety +14

    If I had to downsize the studio to just one machine, this would be it. It's a one-stop shop for synths/drum/sampling/time stretch/looping/effects/sequencing. It may not do them all perfectly or efficiently, but it overcomes the limitations of most machines out there while still feeling like a performance instrument.

    I bought a MC-707 last summer after realizing that I could be wrong about what it could actually do beyond the weird vibes its name was giving me and as a result, I have picked up several pieces of the Roland Aira lineup to become a true fanboy lol 😂 The MC-707 is already much deeper and wider now than it was last summer to the point that starting an analysis all over again on what it is and can do is necessary. Hands down, it has quickly become one of my best gear purchases independent of a desktop computer and yet it can work well with any DAW! It is possibly the best kept secret weapon for hip hop that people are not sharing! Go black and green and don’t look so mean lol 😂 🎯🎯🎯🎯

      What up, Roney. Fellow MC-707 owner here. I think the two things that are bothering me are 1. The default drum kits are all basically the 909 kit with one kick and one snare changed. They could've done wayyyyy better in terms of the drums that shipped with the unit. 2. We need a synth editor (and sample utility) for Mac/PC/iOS badly. The synth engine is super deep and sounds great, but editing on that screen is a chore. Otherwise.. I'm happy. Super easy to sequence on once you get the flow. Peace.

      @@mikenoface I agree! From seeing editors appear for other devices when they were least expected from third party developers, I believe that an editor is either on the way or already exists and we have not discovered it yet lol 😂
      I recently found 2 for an old Yamaha keyboard that I have as well as seeing that Omnisphere will edit the JD-Xi and others.
      Since Roland Cloud exists, it may be our best bet in the short term. Peace ✌🏾

      @@mikenoface I actually sold my 707 because the drum kits are awful. Roland should be ashamed of itself for releasing a $1000 machine with terrible drum kits. I would of forgiven them if there was an easy way to make your own kits. I even bought the ones from Roland Cloud and they were still 909s!! SMH

      Are there any items left or add-ons to be desired as seen elsewhere?
      With everything Roland has added to the MC-707, it seems that the trends and tides moving between hardware and software are being eliminated and unified.

    Much like the 909, it had a bumpy start but with the updates and bug fixes, it’s a stellar piece of gear. The zencore is really great for sound design. The sequencer blows away the 909. @@MeneTekelUpharsin as far as presets go, there are thousands. And it’s easy to design any sound you would want. Like all synths, it has some drawbacks. You have to choose between ring mod or sync - you can’t have both affecting the same two oscillators. The filters, like most virtual analog filters are not great. Good but not great. The sequencer is nearly perfect but a huge drawback is that it does not have probability per note - something even a 300.00 Novation Tracks sequencer has. It’s been an update request for years but still no probability.

    YES - re the Roland MC-x0x grooveboxes were always marketed to DJs and techno / EDM makers. I don't rap but I do hip-hop-ish and I've always used them (currently MC-909). Nobody else posting MC-909 videos (or any MC-x0x) is doing hip hop vibes. And likewise the MPC has the reputation for the hip-hop and ppl don't realize its equally competent for EDM. The guys who did the Stranger Things 80s analog synth vibe theme music used MPCs, people were surprised because they thought MPCs are for hip-hop. So ridiculous. RZA using the MC-909 is the only publicized exception I recall.

There is no song mode, though they literally just released an update that added Scene chaining after about 2 years of people asking for it. The verse lab is more for making songs, it has a song mode, let's you record vocals etc. Personally I would still go with the MC707 because it's a really nice groovebox with a very nice (though maybe not intuitive) sample/synth engine built in and the screen is better than that calculator displays they got on the MV.

      I was at CES in Las Vegas right before covid hit and Roland had a booth there. I met the product rep guy Peter (shown in this video) and told him the same thing. I held my iPhone up to where the screen on the MC-707 is and said "See this should have been bigger, had tilt for different view angles, and touch screen". He looked shocked like I was speaking alien but he took a picture of it and said he's show the higher ups.

It lacks a song mode and there are just TOo many sounds - not trying to browse 3.000 + presets on that small lcd screen - Roland was really close with this one-- they still managed to f-- it up tho, I can’t justify buying that for dawless use

We've been asking for a few basic updates for a good long while from Roland and they just ignored us and gave all the love to the MC707.... on top of that the MC707 does everything the TR8S does. because those are completely different beasts, but yet great on their fields. You see - MC707 is as bad sampler as MPC Live (for example) is. On the other side - I really don't know why MPC Live is called ... Live :-) MC707 with faders the way the workflow is layout is far better "live" tool.

    Between this MC 707 & the TR 08s, I really don't know which one to get. I've been stuck between the two for a while now. I have the Roland DJ 808 DJ controller, and have a hard time understanding how to make the most out of the beat machine / sequencer. If you're familiar with the 3 of these which one would be the easiest to learn and be able to use? I'm coming from a DJing background and don't have a whole lot of knowledge on these types of beat machine controllers, but I would like to purchase one bc I am also trying to start up a Record Label / Recording Studio

    • @DyReckProductions
      @DyReckProductions  Před 3 lety +1

      Out of the 3 of them I would get the 707 because of the Zencore, synth features, And the flexible sequencer features.. Its easy to make a beat on it because you can just use it like a step sequencer...And it has all the vintage sounds from past roland machines..I think you get more for your money with the 707..even if you don't understand it yet..when you do you'll be good to go.

      Alright, is the 707 pretty easy for someone that has made beats using a beat machine to understand. Like if I had some producers rent some studio time to make a beat would the 707 be something they can pick up on quickly, if they were to be coming from a MPC style beat machine, or something similar.

    • @DyReckProductions
      @DyReckProductions  Před 3 lety +1

      @@carlos_mann Well If there coming from an MPC style workflow than I would go for the MPC ONE..Its extremely easy to use once you get the hang of loading your sounds and getting started.. There's a million videos on it on CZcams and even if you don't find what your looking for searching CZcams for the MPC ONE..You can always do a search for the MPC Live or the X they all share the same software so anything you need there's a video for it on CZcams..Its better than the 707 and its $700..So its $300 dollars cheaper than the 707.

    As usual Roland wrecking amazing machines with hardware constraints to finally (after the price drops years later) make some firmware updates and get the things it should had in the release (like Mv1). This machine was what Novation Circuit news should had been (the tracks and the other) but also it isn't what Roland should had released (in fact the Toraiz seems more Roland thant Roland even with no firmware updates never loool). Then you put few ram on this mc707 alongside that joke of screen... and ask for 1k... wtf Roland?
    When this machine get lower at price it will be perfect for modders who will probably expand the internal memory (after crack the chips probably custom by Roland), then add a proper screen or VGA/HDMI output (maybe Roland will give Zenbeats support to this?) like people did with Mpcs and jjOSXL...

    Its not a sampler really its a full blown synthesizer and prolly the best multifx unit ever made thing has all the boss pedals and their iconic tape echo all inside that box. Put it with a midi keyboard and let the legendary roland synths games begin. They had the mc909 for them hip hop jungle guys but it got shadowed by the mpc 4000 so they prolly said fffk it lets aim to the techno house dudes🤣 i aint never changing my mpc x and 4000 i can make 3hrs live techno.with my mpc x and a tr8s oh i am a techno dude.🤣 I have a juno a jdxa and a system 8 for them roland synths. But this could be a very good solution if ya into strictly hypnotic dub techno with em short atmospheres and aggreassive basslines with bit of emo pads. Its a killer box there. I know dudes make 1hr sets with it on that dub sound. But for other genres. Hm..also the sound vs tr8s and mpc.. is less. Comes.more.hot outside and you can hear it too on the final mix. But job well.done roland for making a memorabilia box and a killer effector all in one.
