    I enjoyed using this more than any modern MPC. The workflow of this is unmatched. You don't even need to crack open a manual and hardly any menu diving. What it says on the panel is what it does. Only bad part about it is that song mode is limited as hell. Other than that I loved it for what it is and that Filter from Dave Smith is insane!

      @@DaMixWizard yeah, it's often talked about on the Pioneer forums. There's a few work around and that is one of them. It's actually what pioneer recommends you do it has a screen that makes it easy to organize your sequences. Best I can compare it too is the TR8S. Where you have 16 steps per sequence this has 64 steps per sequence but everything about this unit is optimized for 4/4 beats and that's what makes you pull your hair out.

    I have both SP-16 and AS-1. The SP-16 is close to being a great machine...it is good and it does sound great. The AS-1 sounds amazing but the sequencer is meh. Pioneer has basically abandoned these products. Too bad...I think they had a good thing brewing.

      I heard on the grapevine from somebody who worked at Pioneer, that due to multiple restructures in the organisation (which happened when Pioneer DJ was bought by a different company), the team that developed the Toraiz line are long gone. So the chance of any future firmware updates are slim to none. I find this almost criminal considering the price, and given that they still manufacture and advertise most of these machines. My pipe dream is a JJOS type situation, where one of the OG devs who left Pioneer continues to work on the firmware, or the firmware being open-sourced, but I know it's never gonna happen

    • @555atU
      @555atU Před 2 lety +2

      @@rorz999 yeah I think the SP-16 has been discontinued within the last few weeks. I would bet that grapevine is correct. Pioneer DJ is still pushing out new products, but the Toraiz line looks dead in the water. Pioneer is sticking with their bread and butter...which is fine. It just sucks to see these great products not be improved upon, but there are lots of competitors that do make great stuff like Akai, Roland, and Elektron in this space. The partnership with Dave Smith was the differentiator that appealed to many including myself.

    just ordered one. 16-voices is just about right for hiphop and other electronic music genres. 64 sec sampling time is more than enough if you ever played with a oldshool mpc.... and the it sounds juicy as the legendary samplers

    • @N1h1L3

      64 secs PER SAMPLE with a total of 256 mb ram comes down to 16 minutes of total sample time PER PROJECT, spread out over the 16 scenes per project.

      You can use the toraiz or the dgs 1000 right out of the box. The MPC live program was is extensive. The toraiz is very basic. But that's what's brilliant about the sampler. You don't need all that other stuff really to make hip Hop. And you really don't need all that other stuff to make any other kind of music that way. But the DJS 1000 has better layout. They're basically the same machine. The DJs only lacks the song mode and the filter. Beyond that they're the same machine. Except the DJs 1000 has q slice. Which means you can take any file you got. And say it's four bars Long. You can chop that up in the 64 slices right. But the slice please through depending on where you hit it. That's pretty cool. So you got single shots. Can you got continuous loop shots. The DJs 1000 layout is just so smooth. And if you've already got a digital DJ deck mixer etc. It looks beautiful right next to it. They had the right idea and concept. But they should have made both machines the same. And the form factor be the only Factor why you about one of the other. The other thing about these machines is you can use them as controllers. Just say you got FL studio open or even Ableton live. And say you chop something up in the sampler and Ableton live and it's chopped up and sinks perfect. You've got 16 channels of MIDI controller. And it's a 64 note keyboard if you will. So you get on the fly sink with everything literally on either machine and just say sampling directly back into whatever program you're using. And then just take that and crop it and chop it. So if you do use software. Probably the most underrated piece of equipment you don't have is a pioneer squid. If that thing worth sampler it would be a beast. Once again you could just chop your stuff up and whatever program you're using. That thing's a sequencing madhouse. And to go down a further wormhole if you're making hip Hop. Basically you can just get acid 10 or 11 whichever one it is. And with the MIDI mapper and just the basic function of acid. You could just chop everything up in MIDI mapper with one of these controllers. Record the midi data to the timeline. And the way the medium Apple works is it shows the audio according to the midi note superficially on the timeline. So then you can go drag move midi data but it looks like an audio file.

    Then what happened was Pioneer Electronics sold off their remaining shares in Pioneer DJ and Dave Smith moved in with Focusrite. I can't see Alpha Theta doing anything with the Toraiz lineup, they are too busy repainting old DJ controllers...

    The sequencer has those buttons like the TR-8S, which just makes me wish Roland made this. I was just too suspicious of Pioneer. I mean they have that other CDJ-lookin sampler. I dunno. I love CDJs, and I love the DJM-V10.
    Dave Smith gets way too much credit. The E-mu guys and Roland did the real work to develop MIDI. The keyboard E-mu licensed to Sequential was basically turning notes into MIDI messages. And Roland’s DCB interface was pretty close to just being MIDI with a different plug. What did Dave do? Help them sort out the differences between DCB and the E-mu tech maybe? That was actually Kakehashi-san from Roland!
    If this has a good interface then you know Dave didn’t have anything to do with it! The synths Dave worked on have really questionable interfaces. Try messing with a Mopho or Evolver or God forbid a Tempest. Dave just wanted to pile features into things without even worrying about the interface or workflow. There’s a funny story from Rob Rosen about Dave Smith needing Rob to work on an old Prophet because Dave didn’t actually understand the hardware he supposedly designed. No, but I mean I’m sure he was a great guy, except for the time he fucked over E-mu and just quit paying them the $100 licensing fee for each $4000 Prophet 5 he sold circa 1980. Because why would he pay 2.5% to E-mu when he could just steal it, right?
