Jonah Lomu: A Rugby Legend (2001)

  • The sight of All Black's Jonah Lomu pile-driving his way to the try line, carrying half the opposition team on his back, is undoubtedly one of the most exciting in sport, and JONAH stylishly charts the rise of this phenomenal young man. Featuring interviews with the disarmingly boyish star himself, as well as awed tributes from team-mates and opponents, this is a celebration of one rugby union player to have transcended the sport. It's not hard to see why. Lomu off the pitch is personable and self-deprecating. On the pitch he's all but unstoppable, and here's the evidence from his career to date, including amazing footage of Lomu as an enormous schoolboy player in 1993. His unfortunate opponents that day can reflect that the following year Jonah became the youngest All-Black in history. At 63 minutes long, the producers have had to strike a balance between action and context, and though there's only time for the best of the highlights of events at the World Cups in 1995 and 1999 and beyond, it's a largely successful compromise, featuring classic tries that bear repeated viewing. However, Lomu's battle against Nephrotic Syndrome--the kidney disorder that almost snuffed out his career--is glossed over in a couple of sentences, and students of rugby might hope for a little more analysis of the games themselves. That said there's at least a dozen slices of action here that will take your breath away.

Forget the rugby player that he was, how down to earth and humble was he ? He was a role model for all ages, look how he conducted himself on and off the field, he was one of the very very few ‘world’ sports stars that all ages could look up to, when he fell ill he never once grumbled and kept on smiling, throughout his illness he lost nearly all his wealth as a result but he just accepted that was the card he was dealt but carried on inspiring and setting an example, what a selfless humble man, something the world of sport will will rarely see to often again, great memories of my teens from a proud welsh man

Thank you. Because all of what you said, is basically Jonah.
He was the same when he played for my Hurricanes and Lions here in wellington. Even when he played for auckland etc. He was just an absolute beast, and off the field, he showed his island side. His Tongan heritage.
A real hero the sporting world will never see the likes of again.

I remember thinking we (All Blacks) were good enough to win the 95 RWC we lost and stories later that of the All Blacks had food poisoning didn't matter we lost the game this came out later, but as I was watching the South African people white & black celebrate South Africa's deserved win, I realized that this RWC 95 was much more than the All Blacks losing. It was a United front of a new South African Nation and suddenly us losing came for the 1st & only time 2nd because I felt all South African at that moment were one, at last. I think the South African people were the real winners and we would catch up with the Springbok's at a later date. Rugby brought a Nation together, we couldn't beat that. RIP Jonah.
