Jonah Lomu - The Ultimate Rugby Player

  • That's what he was - the ultimate rugby player. Jonah Lomu was an anomally in rugby. We have not seen his like before or after his career. The thing that made his special was that he wasn't a one trick pony. He made a big impact in 1995 by running over people, but he developed his game to one where he was able to offload in a tackle or put in a deft little chip and chase to score.
    He was the first global rugby superstar and one of the greatest players ever.
    Rest in peace big man...
    Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

    Was there EVER a finer sight in world Rugby than Mr Jonah Lomu in full flight towards a try-line?
    And I say that as an Englishman, who watched him demolish, and literally run over, us in 1995.
    Rest Easy, Jonah, you will forever be missed, but NEVER forgotten.

    I still remember where I was when I first saw Jonah Lomu play. 1995. I had just finished my shift whilst working part-time at JD Sports on Oxford Street. Loads of us went to a pub on Carnaby Street for after work drinks. This being London nobody in our group had an interest in rugby; only me. But the World Cup was on the screens. The game against Ireland had me glued. I was like: "who's this dude?" By the time he went on that run where he ran the length of pitch beating 5 players then handing off to Gronfeld, everyone in our group, indeed the whole pub, were also glued to the screens - stunned by the sheer athleticism of this guy. From that moment I knew (as did the whole world) that rugby union players would have to paid!

Great hands, great strength, great speed, great power, a beautifully balanced runner, with a brilliant side step off either foot, and a fair man who always played with respect for the shirt, his team mates and the opposition. Truly, unquestionably, the greatest player of all time. A phenomenon. Unlikely to ever see his like again.

Lomu is so fast that he can run right by you and so big and strong that he just plows through bodies. Arm tackles could never take a man like this off his feet. Jonah Lomu is a true once in a lifetime kind of athlete.

    People dont realise, Jonah Lomu was not a certainty for the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He, along with several other players were about a 50/50 chance to make the squad going into the Trial. I was at the game and witnessed him score two brilliant tries, cementing his place in tbe team. Had he not produced the goods that night he would NOT have made the squad, some really good players missed out(Lee Stensness, Arran Pene...). The guy was superhuman, amazing speed and agility, for a player his size RIP Jonah

    RIP? My good friend, if Jonah is the Jonah we all came to know he is not resting one moment. He is running paths through the rugby teams in Heaven and having a ball of a time, with no end in sight. We can all stand up and salute his memory. This was the only man the Springboks feared on the field, they had a whole strategy all by itself built around Lomu. This man was a rugby wrecking ball and the best the world has ever seen. Thank you NZ for giving the world such an exhibition of sheer rugby genius and physical phenomena. We shall never forget this man. What is to me the pinnacle of his attitude towards the game was the fact that with his strength, explosive power and speed he could have ended many a career on the field. He never did, he played his heart out, putting everything into every moment, but his respect for fellow rugby players prevented him from seriously injuring players. A gentleman. A hero. A phenom. In a hundred year's time every rugby enthusiast will remember two names from days gone by. William Webb Ellis and Jonah Lomu. And deservedly so.

    This is the best jonah tribute on the tube. I followed his career closely.. he had a freaky atheltic look...different to Nemani Nadolo. Nadolo is a giant..bigger than jonah. Jonah had a more.muscular atheltic look with freaky legs. Jonah true stats were 191cm tall at around 119kg. He was lighter at the 99 wc. We never saw him at his best as he was on a strict low carb diet and was unable to work with weigts for.prolonged periods due to the kidney dysfunction. Speed and size combination never seen before. If you have any footage during the super rugby..not just tries..but jonah moments. Thanks for the vid..its the best one

      Jean-Luc Du Preez Thanks Jean-Luc! Really appreciate the kind words. He was one of my favourite players and I really enjoyed putting this one together. Thanks for the support

      Jean-Luc Du Preez Closer to 195-196cm or about 6ft 5in. He played lock in the 4th form at Wesley College (1st XV) before moving to number 8 and later to the wing.

    • @jldp24
      @jldp24 Před 6 lety

      Daryl W ..i know all the Jonah facts..im telling you that he wasnt 6ft5. He was listed as 194cm on debut against france..195cm in wc 95. But those heights are exaggerated. He was actully 191cm tall. He was shorter than Reuben Thorne and Ronn Cribb.

    • @jldp24
      @jldp24 Před 6 lety

      But dont worry. Savea height is also exaggerated. Savea true.heightis around 188 cm and sbw is 193cm.

    • @darylw156
      @darylw156 Před 6 lety +4

      Jean-Luc Du Preez ....Jonah was not 191cm tall as I had met Jonah quite a few times in his early years (just before he became an all black) as I also played rugby through the 90s in Auckland and he was definitely taller than me. My height is 190cm barefoot. He was quite a bit taller at least 4-5cm. Jonah grew up in Mangere, Auckland which is where I grew up also. Unless you actually stood next to the guy or knew him in his early days, then you'd know truly how big the guy was and how he moved that frame around a rugby field.

    Big statement, but he was probably the most game changing player in Rugby history ! All of a sudden every team needed a 6'4" 110kg+ winger ! As serious as international sport is it is basically entertainment for the people. No one entertained like Jonah ! 1in a million !😎👍

    Ever tried to stop a runaway train? That is what Jonah Lomu was like once he got the ball and went for a try! I had a feeling that those who tried to tackle him then were breathing a sigh of relief for having endured the ordeal with no MAJOR broken bones!

    Will we ever see another player like this phenomenon of a man. Though he played in the best team he shone out like a star at its brightest moment. Speed, power,balance and reliability at scoring tries repeatedly while abliterating some of the best defences in the world. Rest on peace legend. I'm just glad that I was there to witness this humble beast.

    Great video I am a Brit Pom moving to NZ next year. I don't really understand Your Rugby culture but I am trying to learn but I don't understand the rules. It seems to be about patterns and movements.. Very informative watch thank you for putting the footage together with some experience in radio as a disabled person I appreciate the depth of your coverage. My grandpa in NZ now passed had polio and he loved rugby he told me a lot.

      Actually that was Mike Catt, a British Lions back (the poor bastard). I would''ve fuckin' shit myself if I saw Jonah running at me and it was my job to stop him. He was six-five and 255 pounds (18 stone-plus), no-one could stop him.
      As you say, such a shame that he died so young. Peace be upon you, Jonah.
