@SaltyBrains if you're emotionally charged, and try to initiate a fight because of it, chances are your headspace isn't clear enough to fight without going full tunnel vision. The other person will likely be thinking clearly and not with their emotions (usually rage) and will actually fight better and probably win

@SaltyBrains thats half of what it means. the other part of fighting with a clear head is discretion (as in "better part of ... " you know, like they said in the old country) .. ie accurately assessing the odds and deciding rationally how much pain the cause is really worth, and/or more successful strategies etc.
I call these "Terminator moments" like in the first movie when you're inside his head looking at the readout of options and he goes for "fuck you, asshole"
...only in real life the option list is a lot longer: call for backup, apologize, get a lead pipe, surprise him in the bathroom, ignore him, leave the club with his girl, call him names in 3 languages from a safe distance, buy him a beer, throw something in his face, get arrested, have him thrown out, get your ass beat with an audience, call the cops and laugh at him while they're doing whatever... there are always a wide variety of options...and you always make better strategic decisions if you're one who's more sober and more calm.
Thus the old British phrase "keep calm and carry on".
