  • I ordered this ready-to-fly (RTF) J3 Cub model from Banggood on the first week of September right before Labor Day. It was on sale at $89.99, plus $2.70 for shipping and $1.80 for shipping insurance, so I paid a total of $94.49. However, the price may have changed, but I suspect it will go back on sale again if you are willing to wait:
    www.banggood.com/XK-A160-J3-S...
It was not in stock when I placed the order, but I did not care since I was not in a hurry to receive it. It was delivered to my home late October.
I think what I paid was a very good price for such a complete package of a nicely-sized parkflyer with a respectable 650mm wingspan. It is not too small and it is not big either.
In the first and three episodes, I showed the unboxing, the assembly, and the maiden flight:
    • XK A160-J3 Skylark 4CH...
    • XK A160-J3 Skylark 4CH...
    • XK A160-J3 Skylark 4CH...
My initial observations were all good. However, as I watched more reviews of this airplane on CZcams, I realized that many people have had or have been having an issue they called a "tip stall". The plane was becoming unstable during some turns and then stalling or going into a spin without warning. A video posted by CZcamsr Albert Kim was especially curious, because his plane crashed during a turn, although it had plenty of airspeed:
    • Multiprotocol Module T...
Watch that video at 9:52 and at 10:12. After watching that video, I became concerned and wanted to investigate this issue further to figure out what is the culprit of these crashes and if they are systemic to this airplane, or even to the whole XK line.
In the fourth video, I presented my findings and what I believed the cause of this issue was. And my findings were really bad news in my opinion. I think this product should have never been released for sale. This instability issue seemed to be widespread enough that I believe it is a design or programming flaw of the stabilization system.
    • XK A160-J3 Skylark 4CH...
In this video, I am doing another flight of this airplane, but this time using my beloved RadioMaster TX16S transmitter. Despite my good initial impression during the maiden flight, I did not have the same performance and stability in this flight. I am suspecting an issue with the calibration of the stabilization system. The plane also felt tail heavy in the "expert" mode, which I did not like at all. This flight was not that much fun for me, although I had more precise control via my TX16S. If you own any XK airplanes, I suggest you check them before your next flight using the procedure I detail in the previous episode. GOOD LUCK!
My next goal is to disable the stabilization system completely and flying this airplane manually without any stabilization. If needed, I am also going to adjust the center of gravity (CG) adding some weight to the nose. If I succeed, I will post another update video.
Thank you very much for watching. If you find this video useful or informative, please give it a thumbs-up. I have this morning checked the a800 and found I couldn’t replicate the rudder gittering that you encountered on the skylark, but the easy way to go back to complete manual control is to remove the imput from channel 8 then the plane as far as I can determine will be manual with rates and expo added on a three position switch. Keep up the good work michael

Adjust the elevator control rod. In 3g mode the elevator is added automatically as throttle is given. In 6g mode the elevator jumps to about 15-20 up when it should be neutral

Thank you Shane Michaels. I will check that elevator rod.

the tail heavy issue is not about trim or the location of CG..it's about your gyro stabilizer. the gyro is initialized in a high-nose attitude while it's sitting on the ground on its landing and tail wheels..try to initialize the gyro by placing the aircraft on a level attitude so that the gyro (stabilizer, if you like) will re-learn it's level attitude.my 1 cent. (from the Philippines!~)

    Hi
Could you fix it?I just bought this airplane
I should turn off gyro somehow but I can’t

Hi again, I have been thinking about the problem and I wonder if merely disconnecting the rudder pushrod and turning the plane into a yank and bank would overcome the problem. I have a number of planes that I have fitted the Zohd Kopilot lite stabiliser that system utilises only airelons and elevator to provide stabilisation and this system works well would this modification work on this plane, it is easy to centre the rudder and fix in place, if it did work maybe remove the control rod altogether and that might go some way to correcting the C.G. I’m going to try this mod on the A800 but the weather here means it will be some time before I get a chance to try it out. Keep up the good work. Michael

Hi Michael. I do not want XK's stabilization system, because I do not think it is a good one. I would rather disable it fully and then adjust the CG to make all my XK models slightly nose-heavy. In any case, please let me know how you changes work our for you. Thank you again for sharing.

Be careful with the rudder control. Better yet, so not use the rudder while flying this airplane. Please watch this video:

I crashed it so many times due to the issue.

Many thanks for sharing your thoughts on this plane my friend, unfortunately I did purchase this cub before I saw all the reviews mainly because it looks pretty cool but I've not maidened it yet I think Ground Control rc mentioned like yourself about replacing the brick with a normal 4 channel rx in it or even something like a lemon rx stability plus rx utilising my tx16s to help with my beginner status for now. Keep up your great channel my friend and if you have not already done so please could you make a video of how to update the firmware on the tx16s as this would be much appreciated as you go through the process methodically slow enough that I can follow,, Thanks again and with my very best regards from Alan in the UK 🤗🤗🤗👍👍👍❤

Hi Longjammer III. I am sorry to hear that you did already buy it. I will attempt to disable the stabilization next and adjust the CG on this plane. I will post a video if I am successful. Please stay tuned. Also, I will try to look into updating the firmware on my TX16S, which I have done yet. Perhaps this weekend (if it rains and I cannot fly). Please stay tuned. Thank you again for your kind words. Cheers!

How long is the flight autonomy?

    • @PropsWheels
      @PropsWheels  Před 2 lety +2

Hi cristian castro. I did not test the total flight duration on one battery, but it should be around 10 minutes for casual flying at around mid throttle.
