What about ...: " this is one of the best REM performances I´ve ever seen cause the backing vocals are so strong that it hijacks the song along ." . Not much into what Patti Smith does but does she shine in this context .
When Michael Stipe sings, there is NO one else in the world. Such a talent and a showman and to see him sing his song with his Idol Patti Smith, well it just doesn’t get any better. One of my favourite REM songs.
I'm reading Mtrain, the latest book of Patti Smith. And it's full of meaning, as you said of Stipes'.
The fact that this track is a tribute to River Phoenix makes it even more mind blowing.

REM had some of the most legendary collaborations with other musicians. Patti Smith , Neil Young , Thom Yorke.. I’m sure I’m missing a bunch . Michael Stipe was never hesitant to share the stage , and how lucky we are to have these recordings ❤️

I don't know if anyone is even going to see this because the video is a few years old but: Patti Smith puts so much heart into her singing she makes herself vulnerable to us with every note. I profoundly respect her courage as well as her talent.

The song is written in the same style of Patti Smith, poetically. The song was inspired by her and is about her, IMO. Patti Smith also wrote "Smells like Teen Spirit" covers by some band called... Nirvana.

Up is my favorite R.E.M. album but New Adventures in Hi-Fi is definitely pretty high on my list. Oddly enough, for some reason I didn’t like it very much when it first came out. It has definitely grown on me over the years. I also like the under appreciated album Around the Sun.
