Day 3: Mumbai, India - To begin the day we took a quick trip to Elephanta Island to see the Elephanta caves. We then came back to Mumbai, and had amazing Bombay duck at Gomantak restaurant, and then proceeded to have one of the greatest Mumbai street foods, called vada pav.
00:22 Elephanta Caves (boat ride 180 INR ($2.69) - One of the worthwhile attractions in Mumbai is the Elephanta Caves, which are a series of historical religious temple caves located on an island off the coast of Mumbai. To get there, you can take a boat from the Gateway of India. We decided to go there first thing in the morning to try to avoid the crowds. I thought it was well worth it.
6:56 Gomantak Boarding House (Dadar West) - One of the top Mumbai foods I wanted to try when I was in Mumbai was Bombay duck, also known and bombil, which is actually not duck at all, but lizardfish. We took a taxi to Dadar West and went to a restaurant called Gomantak that specializes in Malvani cuisine (from the area of Mumbai) and always has Bombay duck on their menu. I ordered the Bombay duck fry, fried pieces of lizardfish that came with the full thali set, including rice and a few curries and chutneys on the side. I also couldn’t resist ordering a side dish of pomfret masala. One interesting thing from this amazing Mumbai restaurant was solkadhi - made from coconut milk and kokum fruit, and it was my first time to try it. Total price - 710 INR ($10.60)
14:14 Ashok Vada Pav - One of the most important Mumbai street food snacks is vada pav, which is a fried potato cutlet stuffed into a bun and seasoned with some flavorful chutneys and spices. It’s sometimes known as the Mumbai vegetarian burger. Ashok Vada Pav is known for serving one of the best vada pav in Mumbai, and they also have some serious history to them. When I took my first bite, I knew exactly why it was so popular. It was absolutely sensationally delicious. It was a little on the salty side, but the vada pav was so good, with a balance of salty, spicy, sweet, and crunchy. Vada pav is one of the most popular Mumbai street foods, but at Ashok vada pav you’ll find one of the best in Mumbai. Vada pav (vada pao) - 20 INR ($0.30).
18:36 Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum - 100 INR ($1.49) - After the amazing vada pav, we took a taxi over to the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, which is another good museum to visit when you are in Mumbai. I especially liked the actual building.
19:58 Bagdadi Restaurant - For dinner we headed back to Colaba near to our hotel and ate at another legendary Mumbai restaurant known for serving north Indian Mughlai food. The one dish I had to order was chicken masala fry, and I also got daal and palak paneer. Although all the food was indeed on the buttery and oily side, it was incredibly delicious. Total price - 515 INR ($7.70).
Thank you for watching this Mumbai food and travel video. The highlight of the day was the Bombay duck fry and the Mumbai street food vada pav.

Pink liquid is called sol curry ( kadhi ). Sol kadhi can be consumed as an appetizer just before meals, during meals with rice, or even as a digestive after meals. It is made from kokums berry (Garcinia indica) and coconut milk and very popular in coastal regions of Maharashtra and Goa(States in India). 'Sol' is also known as kokum in Marathi (Maharashtra's state language).

Ever since I learned it is rude to use the left hand in cultures that eat with their hands I have practiced this. I'm pretty clumsy as well. I have to sit on my left hand to keep from using it for tearing bread. In fact watching Mark struggle I paused this and looked up technique. Yeah, we are both doing it the hard way. Now I look forward to more practice using better technique!

I agree. I never mind little price increases as a tourist IF I think that it is helping someone feed their family. If it is egregious and completely arbitrary then I get angry. But 10rs to most Westerners is nothing, but 10rs from each tourist over the course of a day, it might be the only way that man might be able to provide the basics to his family (and I mean no disrespect in saying that).

They gave me more for the take away than they did for the sit in dining portion, I had enough lamb curry for three days, it was awesome. I was too scared to try the extra hot curry though. :/ These days I get heartburn just drinking water, lol.

Apart from the food that is brought by the "INVADERS" (BIRYANI, QORMA, KEBABS, PULLAOW, SAMOSA, MOST OF THEIR SWEETS like firni, Ghulam jaman etc etc etc etc, just Wikipedia for the further evidence and corroborate)
India has flavourless lentil and vegetable dishes that are native to India. So, to have the best main course meals it's a must that you go to what most of them call a, "Muslim" resturant, like the ones on Muhammad Ali road. Even in this video Mark's main course meal is from a Muslim resturant. And now that they have banned beef. Many dishes are already gone. But you can definitely try them out (like Nihari in breakfast) at a Muslim household, if you know one. But he'll definitely not come on camera.
Before 1300 years ago before the "invaders" came to india, there was only brahmacharis and bhujans didnt include the ingredients that might make your food tasty. So you might find only dishes like Rajma or idli dosa or chola bhatura that might be native to India. Others are brought by the those whom they call "invaders", along with all their best architecture, poetry (and poets), literature, Music (ghazal, qawali and others etc) and anything any everything that sells out side India is basically given to India by the ones whom indian don't respect so much (including the British).
Historically the royalty (culture, food, music, literature and poetry as well) in India has always moved from WEST to EAST. Recently they tried to impose their home grown leadership (through BJP and it's other umbrella organisations like RSS and BJP and vhp etc) in India and you're seen it's results upon us.

The pink curry that you're wondering about, is called the 'Solkadhee'. It consists of fresh mangosteen juice, combined with coconut milk, and seasoned with garlic, cumin, green chillies, and coriander, with salt and sugar added to taste. It's one of the prime dishes of the Konkani / Malwani cuisine that you had here.
