- The motherboard acts as the connection point where major computer components are attached to. It holds many of the crucial components of the system like the processor, memory, expansion slots and connects directly or indirectly to every part of the PC.
CPU- Central Processing Unit
It is also known as the microprocessor or the processor. It is the brain of the computer, and it is responsible for fetching, decoding and executing program instructions as well as performing mathematical and logical calculations.
The NorthBridge (also called the memory controller) is in charge of controlling transfers between the processor and the RAM, which is way it is located physically near the processor. It is sometimes called the GMCH, for Graphic and Memory Controller Hub.
The SouthBridge (also called the input/output controller or expansion controller) handles communications between peripheral devices. It is also called the ICH (I/O Controller Hub). The tem bridge is generally used to designate a component which connects two buses
Main Memory / Random Access Memory (RAM)
Random access memory or RAM most commonly refers to computer chips that temporarily store dynamic data when you are working with your computer to enhance the computer performance. In other words, it is the working place of your computer where active programs and data are loaded so that any time time the processor requres them, it doesn't have to fetch them from the hard disk which will take a longer access time.
Expansion Buses
An input/output pathway from the CPU to peripheral devices typically made up of a series of slots on the motherboard. Expansion boards (cards) plug into the bus. PCI is the common expansion bus in a PC and other hardware platforms. Buses carry signals, such as data; memory addresses, power and control signals from component to component.

The major developments in the motherboards is as follows:
->The IBM Personal Computer launched the first motherboard in 1981, called ‘planar’. The motherboard held the computer’s CPU and RAM, provided ports for keyboard and cassette tape,
->In 1984, IBM came up with the Advanced Technology (AT) motherboard design.
->The ATX was the first significant motherboard development since the year 1984
->In the year 1998, the Micro ATX Boards were produced that despite being half the size of the standard ATX board were fully compatible
Power connectors differ between AT and ATX motherboards. AT motherboards use two 12-pin plugs to power the motherboard, while an ATX motherboard uses one 20-pin plug for the power supply. When using an ATX form factor motherboard, you must use an ATX power supply. You can use the pin number to identify whether you have the correct power supply for your motherboard.
AT boards were much bigger compared to ATX boards. This results in some drives overlapping the boards inside the case which meant that in order to replace the board, you would need to take everything out. This is very inconvenient for personal computers, thus the ATX boards were made narrower by almost 4 inches to ensure that there is no overlap.
Another shortcoming of the AT system is in the ports at the back. AT boards only had the most minimal amount connectors in order to maintain compatibility with AT cases. If you like more connectors, you would need to add flying leads to unused expansion slots. ATX cases allowed manufacturers to produce their own custom backplates to suit their motherboards. This allowed most ports to be integrated to the board and moved up, making it much less of an effort to install a new motherboard and even frees up some of the expansion slots taken up by the ports.

No chance. You are stuck with two RAM modules if you have two slots. Check maximum amount of supported RAM memory by your motherboard and buy two higher capacity sticks.
