Medina - How to Play 🎲 and Why It's a Gem 💎

- Designed by Stefan Dorra and published originally by Hans im Glück, Medina has a great pedigree. The game has no luck (just the barest of randomised setups) and each player starts with the same wooden pieces, from which they'll have to choose which to play every turn. Almost everything will be played, resulting in several games of chicken being played simultaneously. It's which parts of the city played when and where that will determine the shape of the city and the winner of the game.
Besides the first edition from Hans im Glück, there was also a second edition from White Goblin in 2014. I talk a bit about the differences at the end, but both editions would do you fine!

I played this game once 8 years ago and still think about it every so often, it's that good. Now to track down a copy.
It's also on BGA. Me and some members of the OG Guild on BGG have a rolling asynch game of it. As soon as one ends, we restart. It's a brilliant game.
Great, I own this one and it's one of my favorite. But sometimes hard to put on the table cause it's almost an abstract game! Thank's again for the cleaver review
A game it reminds me of (with respect to no luck after the set-up) is Through the Desert.
Yup, a fair comparison. You feel the same pull in different directions, deciding what to prioritise, based on the other players' actions. Medina is much more of a game of chicken... Well, several games of chicken at once!
Banger! One of my all-time favourites. Shame about the mould issues with that one edition
Right, that'd be second edition. I heard about that but my copy didn't have a problem.
@@BoardGems I was shocked to find an in shrink copy at a local game store and promptly bought it and … mold! I wiped down the pieces and put a silica jell pac In and hopefully that helps
I got a moldy one for a low price (I knew ahead of time it was likely to have mold.) I wiped it down and spread everything out for several days in the bright mile-high Colorado sunshine, and then stored with silicone packs. You can still see a bit of mold residue on the wooden pieces, but there's no smell and I think it's fine. I've played it a lot.
Oh man, we LOVE the tea tiles. Towards the end of the game, the ability to pass is huge.

I enjoy playing this game on BGA. Too bad mold issues really killed the interest for this game, it was already for a niche audience.
It seems a bit dry
