    I recently bought myself a 2000 plate Rover 75 Club. It's the 1.8 K series engine (yep ... head gasket drama)
    We took the car for its very first Road Test. The Rover 75 was going well ... And Then It All Went WRONG

    Sorry about your dad's car. The head gasket seems to be going smoothly. I said before, the exhaust manifold bolts are the part that bothers me the most, but ya'll got through that cleanly. It'll be worth it, in the end. It's a car worth preserving!

    Here are three tips for your dad from someone who has lost count of how many of these Lovey Rover cars I have done on these k series engines 1.1 1.4 1.8 and Tubo 2.5 v6. Once you take off the inlet manifold drill out the ball bearing in the brass tube connecting to the rad and drill a 1mm hole in the thermostat itself this stops the engine from pressurising replace the bolt rail at the bottom of the engine to the much stronger rail, have just finished a 2.5 v6 replaced both head gaskets for the three-layer uprated ones replaced all belts camshaft belts stat aux belt, the engine has never run so well he was amazed how quiet it was and more power, have just bought a rover 2004 bk full cream leather fully loaded 2-litre diesel turbo saved it from going to scrap yard my new project, have had 4 rover75's, kv6 1.8 and 1.8 turbo and now my new baby 2.0 diesel turbo have waited 4 years for this rover to come up got a long list jobs she needs doing to bring her back to showroom condition as I did on all my rovers, love watching your dad working on the rover just like myself out there am 66 under and over the car every spair time I get to work on her and get her ready for lovely drives out with my partner in the summer, so loving your channel.
    The reason these head gaskets fail is that the single layer with glued-on silicone beads fails due to the head moving a very bad cost-cutting design by Rover given the fact also the long stretch bolts fail as the cylinder head bolts which go through the engine and bolted to a bolt rail at the bottom of the engine over time these loosen allowing the head to vibrate on the cylinder block wearing away at these silicone beads which then causes the head gasket to fail in two ways one it fails by allow the coolant in the cylinder oil ways leaving a mixture of oil and water mix in the rad and expansion tank or leaks into the cylinder causing white smoke from the exhaust pushing coolant out of the exhaust causing miss firing, leaving the spark plug gap tips white and very clean, a simple test is take out the spark plug of the miss firing cylinder turn over the engine and coolant will shoot out that cylinder, after watching your vid you had the best type of failure the coolient leaked in to the cylinder that's why the coolent was still pink. hope this helps in asking why the head gasket fails.

    I've had a Rover 45 with head gasket trouble, It was replaced with the M.L.S gasket along with the thermostat and the thermostat housing ,head bolts timing belt and I got the timing belt fitting tool that stops the cogs from turning. I went doon to Mablethorpe on holiday a 4 odd hour drive from my hoos! I've been doon your neck of the woods a few times, either Skegness or Mablethorpe . The beaches doon there are great, I saw the motor bike racing on the beach at mablethorpe and the stock car racing at Skegness. I've been down in 2 different Rovers , 2 45's both had the K series engine and I had no problems!

    K Series engines are a lovely unit once the head has been sorted and the gasket replacement carried out.
    The gaskets fail because of two main reasons,firstly the design and the material that original gaskets were made from was sub standard to say the very least,second The cooling system including the plastic inlet manifold was notorious for distortion problems when overheated,this given the fact that the capacity of the cooling system was deliberately kept to a lower quantity to aid in bringing the car to operational temperature as soon as possible from cold,meant that if you developed a leak you had little or no time to do anything about it hence overheating and the gasket going pop.
    Talking of leaking coolant Jon
    I must take issue with you and dad for letting The coolant drop on the floor ! Do you perhaps not know that OAT is poisonous to the environment and deadly for Cats and Dogs as it is so sweet to taste the cats especially love it and lick it up freely leading very shortly to A most painful end from Liver Failure.
    My condolences to you dad for the damage to his car hopefully it will be straight forward enough to repair
    In the meantime I'm looking forward to seeing you get the yard floor cleaned of antifreeze coolant residue,good luck.

    • @JonCoupland
      @JonCoupland  Před 5 měsíci +4

      Interesting to read your comments about the engine. Was inevitable really. Don't panic about the coolant. I absolutely understand your concerns however. As Dad mentioned in the video we let it drop on the floor however what you didn't see (because it's absolutely not interesting content) is me cleaning it up immediately with neutralising agents and water, before brushing it into a self contained drain.
      As you know, we have the inspectors on the channel and their safety (along with others) Is key. But I'm sure it was never really in doubt eh 👍

      Agreed. I had an inexpensive late model Metro with a 1.1 K series. I liked its performance for a small engine and it revved freely with no flat spots and good fuel economy. Sadly it feels like it was another example of something that might have been really good with a bit more development put into it and less cost cutting on components.

    If memory serves a friend of mine had the MG ZR hot hatch from new, that had all sorts of cooling problems with the 1.8 K series engine. It spent more time at our local MG Rover Main dealer than with him!

  • @centaurus5676
    @centaurus5676 Před 5 měsíci +1

    The head bolts on the K series were soft and warped which allowed oil into the water, when the gasket was replaced the best long term cure was to replace the bolts with hardened aftermarket bolts. I had one go on a 1.8 K series freelander at 54K and had the hardened bolts put in and the mileage when i sold it was 122K and was fine.

  • @Mickhanic-garage
    @Mickhanic-garage Před 5 měsíci +1

    Original Rover Headgaskets used were cheap and therefore poor quailty, plastic dowels used too. Lotus and Caterham dont have any issues with them failing. New Multilayer steel or better quality ones used survive a lot longer. Other issue is the thermostat and cooling system design working the wrong way round.
    It holds cold water out of a hot engine, not holding hot water in with gradual temp transfer through the coolant. When it opens the cold water floods into the hot block causing thermal shock, the Alloy block and steel liners expand at different rates and the sudden change of temperature happens a few times as the engine fully warms up. There was a later modification with a remote bypass thermostat and a flow disc in place of the original thermostat. this allows full flow and one gradual warm up and the bypass thermostat will open when needed diverting through the radiator.
    I have a 1.8 K series in Skoda Estelle, you may have seen HubNut videos of it or at FOTU so did a bit of research on the K series issues...

      As an Elise owner since December 1996 I can assure you Lotus DID have issues with them failing, not just an odd few but at a wild guess maybe 50% or more of production in warranty and beyond over several years. That happened right from the start at with basic tune 118bhp engines straight out of the box and only got worse with higher tune engines and ‘tuning’ and ‘uprating’ by those who knew nothing (that includes Lotus themselves)
      It was fixed with metal dowels and revised cooling arrangements with controlled bypass, but namely the use of a pressure relief thermostat, or preferably a remote version of this. MLS gaskets certainly help but so does the updated oil rail and properly torquing the revised though bolts and having someone who understands the engineering of stretch bolts. A lot of the problems with the Elise were not helped by the long radiator runs, something in common with the MGF. How it ever got past basic endurance testing with cold starts is anyone’s guess. Pamper them all you like, warm them up slowly and they’ll still fail.
      The K series basic design was light years ahead of the competition, its implementation in production and installation was the bit where it went wrong.

    I use to work for an aftermarket parts manufacturer. The head gaskets rover used for production were made cheaply and the seal on them moved. Victor reinz was tasked with making a better one for the aftermarket and when the Chinese started making the k series. So if a rover had a failing gasket and wasn’t repaired quickly then other issues set in and the rumours start. Basically the method used to make the head gaskets was rubbish and the technology to make it work properly wasn’t really there at the time - it is now though
