Terry Kath is massively underrated
The whole Tanglewood Concert is a masterclass in live music. Terry Kath on guitar took Chicago to a pinnacle!
This is one of my favorite live videos of all time. When you realize 1) how young these guys are and 2) how tight the band is. I mean, they're FIXING THE DRUMS during the intro, and they still don't miss a beat.

I remember the first time I heard Chicago in a friend's basement. It was 1969 and I was 15. It was the first time I'd ever heard a horn section in rock music. I bought the album the next day. I still have it.

Saw them live at Carnegie hall they were amazing not sure if it was 69 or70 the Drummer played a solo about ten minutes

Their early stuff is just SOOO much better than the later stuff, after Terry died . . .
No doubt. They were my first two concerts. Both at the Yale Bowl in 1972(?). My older brother who was in college took me and another older brother (I'm the last of five). I think Delaney and Bonnie opened. The brother who brought us was in college at SO CT STATE COLLEGE and I'm 10 years younger, so I was 10 I guess. Alot of mean green ((what's that smell?). About 3-4 years later the other brother took me with his friends to see them, again at the Yale Bowl
Now, us three are the only ones left.....but I'm still the coolest....
By the way, Terry Kath is quite good, eh? P

The best way to get started with Chicago would be the first song from the first album. Chicago Transit Authority. The song is simply titled “Introduction“ to give you a quick little tour around the band. Plus you get the thick, rich vocals of Terry Kath the guitarist at the time.

That whole concert was fire as were the Tanglewood shows by The Who, Jethro Tull and the Jefferson Airplane. I live 20 minutes from Tanglewood and have seen tons of great shows there, it is an electric and beautiful venue. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎺🎷🎶

Hey Rebeka! Chicago is known for their horn section. The first five albums are pure masterpieces. I believe they have released over 30 albums. Hall of Famers!!!!😎
They released their 38th in 2022.
I would include Chicago VII. It was such an experimental double LP. The first several tracks were all instrumentals. Terry Kath's Byblos is a beautiful track on that album. Wishing You Were Here and Call On Me were two hits from VII.

Thanks for this video; this is one of the best LIVE guitar solos ever! Terry Kath, the guitar player, was an incredible guitarist, who unfortunately died too young. This solo alone should put him one the best of lists for guitar. Maybe you don't see him because his career was so short.

Nah, didn't happen but makes for a good story. Hendrix admired kaths playing but believe it or not his favorite was Billy gibbons.

During the summer of 1969, Cetera was accosted by four men - he stated they were Marines - while attending a baseball game at Dodger Stadium. His jaw was broken in three places and had to be wired shut so it could heal.
this had a lasting affect on him jutting his chin out while singing

Truth. That happened before the band was to go to Columbia Studios in NYC to record their second album, where this track appears on the second disc of the 2 LP album. They recorded it with his jaw wired.
Impossible to overstate how groundbreaking this stuff was for the time. Even more remarkable is well it has aged. Well done commentary after the song.

To add another suggestion here, look for another Tanglewood video of Chicago's on here; this one should be for a suite of songs they wrote collectively called "Ballet For Buchannon" . It brought about two hit songs: "Make Me Smile" and " Color My World".
They were unique group in that they skillfully big band with rock and roll. There were a few other groups with a horn section - Sky and the Family Stone, Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Power - but none could match Chicago's rock and roll feel of their music especially in their earlier years,

One of the most iconic guitar solos ever! None other than Jimi Hendrix once called Terry Kath "The greatest guitarist in the universe." Now they are both jamming together in the sky.
It still confuses me how the dude that the #1 guitarist on every list out there called his #1 isn't on any list. Yeah he died early but so have many others on those lists. The fact he's not considered in the top 100 is crazy.

(LOL) Goes to show ya, great musicians know thier instrument so well they don't have to see it to play..They just go by feel and what they hear. Terry Kath's solo brings tears to my eyes. It is such an epic solo and unfortunately he left us way before his time.
Yes, that solo alone could go in the Hall of Fame. Wild, out of control but not, and at the same time dead on in the heart of the song.
Chicago was great in the 70's Loved the Band
saw them in concert three times. Great band gave us so many hit. Back then we had a number of bands that had horns or a brass section that made beautiful music.

I think you'd love "In the Country" from the same concert, or from the Live at Carnegie Hall recording (but no video for that one). It goes through more changes and also has a great horn arrangement.
I'm one of the biggest Chicago fans ever. Love them so much, have been to many concerts and I own every album they've ever put out. That being said, you folks need to do a search for Leonid & Friends and listen to their 25 or 6 to 4. They are the ultimate tribute band and if you know Chicago like I do, you'll see that they play the song note for note. Since all of the original Chicago guys (inlcuding me) are old dudes now, Leonid & Friends are a re-birth of Chicago. Catch one of their concerts. You won't be disappointed.

Lovely reaction. I read a comment recently on another Reaction Videos Channel that explained where this song title came from. Always wondered what it meant. He said it was based on the time of day. Someone asked someone else what time it was. The answer was -- 3:35 or 4. In other words -- 25 or 26 minutes until 4 o'clock. So --> 25 or 6 to 4.

Rather than "orchestra", the term to use here is "horn section", and it's a huge part of Chicago's trademark sound. 🤘😎
Their first album was a 2 record set called Chicago Transit Authority ( CTA ),A cut called Free Form Guitar was early acid rock to me. If you can find the album get it.I t is a masterpiece with Peter Cetera singing. Peace and enjoy!! Rest In Peace Terry Kath. .He died by accident while playing with or cleaning a gun. I was shown a house in the woods outside Hayward , Wis. area where it happened.

According to them, it's not. It's about staying up trying to finish this exact song. I'm sure drugs could've been involved, but, they said that's not what it was about.
10:35. She actually read to you the quote from the songwriter that the “flashing lights against the sky” allegedly pertained to a neon sign he observed from his home. You can assume otherwise but to say “one can only assume” he’s on drugs is incorrect.
Chicago was built around the 3 horns. This rock band, rather than lots of guitars they used horns. That is why you hear a slight jazz influence.

Rebeka, I have noticed Peter Cetera trying to get the higher notes by doing just what you said he does. For example when he sings waiting for the break of day, he tends to add a quick extra push with a yah.... waiting for the break of day - yah and he does that in almost every line that requires a high note and it sounds a bit like a struggle but as you said it still sounds really good
Only 2nd time on your channel, and Chicago is my #2 Fav band (first 3 albums only. After that, they started doing pop music), under #1 The Beatles. You might want to give Blood, Sweat & Tears (the band) a listen. They are also a Jazz-Rock group same era as Chicago. Peter sings the way he does because he got into a fight and got his jaw broken. He had it wired together for several months and developed that singing style because of it. Guess he never hurt his voice as he sang that way for 50 years or so and has just retired about 5 years ago. He is 78 years old and was the last member to join Chicago. Can tell you love and understand music by the way you move to it. Chicago toured with Jimi Hendrix and opened for him. Jimi said Terry was the best guitar player that he ever heard. Thanks for looking up some facts about the song and sharing them. So many of the other reaction videos never take the time to look up some history on the song that they are reviewing or the band itself. Thanks again.
I'm always amazed at some of the things you see and point out in your reactions. When you described what the singer was doing regarding tilting his head back and how the way he was singing had the potential to damage his vocal cords, surprised me. I had to go watch a second time. There is another band from that era you should check out. The band is Grand Funk Railroad and the song is Inside Looking Out. Looking forward to the next one.
to me when singers do that it is a common volume or mic technique and not necessarily trying to strain some notes out. Only difference in what Peter is doing to other vocalists is that he is playing a Bass guitar at the same time and can not use his hands to pull the mic to and from his mouth like non-instrumental vocalist do. What Peter is accomplishing is VERY hard to do... and note that he went on to have a very successful career, honestly who are WE to criticize his technique.

Terry Kath and Chicago, "Wishing You Were Here", '74 New Year's Rockin' Eve : features Terry and Peter on lead vocals with the incredible backing vocals of the Beach Boys. Peter goes from Bass to acoustic guitar and Terry goes from lead guitar to bass. This live version sounds incredibly close to the studio version that can't tell the difference and you get to see them..
My folks bought this record home (CTA) when I was 13. A life changer for all of us! Rebeka You are a unique presence on here!!!!!

FYI, the lead singer of this song, Peter Cetera, actually recorded the studio version with his jaw wired shut because of it being broken. That helped create his singing style.
Chicago is outstanding. Other early Chicago songs to react to include Make Me Smile, Beginnings, and Does Anybody Really Know What time It Is. You should also listen to Blood Sweat & Tears. More great horns, outstanding vocals and talented musicians....they created unique music that revolved around fusing rock and blues. You will love them. Two other bands with iconic songs from the 70's - Lighthouse and their song One Fine Morning, and the band The Ides of March and their song Vehicle. Same combination of great vocals, horns and talented musicians. I promise that your playlist just improved exponentially! Enjoy!
Terry was a beast on guitar. He truly was the heart and soul of the group They were never the same after his untimely passing in 1978.
