They were unique and could get as hard as any band of the era and harder than most.
As someone who has played in bands my whole life, I love how the keyboard player gets up and goes over to help the drummer adjust his kit. And then Terry keeps the audience entertained by noodling around and then just as soon as he can tell the drummer is ready he starts turning his noodling around into that rhythmic beat that will open the song.

They were 7 brothers ,, they moved to la from Chicago and lived together and practiced and wrote for couple of years in a small apartment till they hit it big

The band definitely went a different direction after him. Totally different sound after his passing. Also, the sound he got out of that guitar with limited equipment. Probably just a Wawa pedal and Marshall amp. Dude could thrash.

Terry Kath, who accidentally shot himself to death in January of 1978 was truly amazing on guitar (and a very soulful singer too). Check out the beautiful song Color my World, which was sung by Kath. Also the song "Make me Smile" really shows off Kath's soulful vocal chops.

Another band with a brass section is Blood, Sweat & Tears...you may want to check them out. Also Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is one of those bands that incorporates instruments not typically found in Rock music such as Cellos and Violins. Although they have Cellists and a violinist on stage during live performances, the studio recordings use a 30 piece orchestra and choir. Try the instrumental "Fire On High" or "Evil Woman" for nice vocal arrangements off the Face The Music album.

Around the late ’60s, Chicago played a few shows with legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Like pretty much everyone who came to see the band perform, Hendrix was mesmerized by Kath’s guitar playing, going so far as to claim that he thought the Chicago guitarist played six strings better than he did, naming Kath the “best guitarist in the universe”.

That's flat out untrue. There's NO footage or recording of him ever saying kath is the best guitarist. But there is footage of him saying Billy gibbons is.
@@globalunitedanimals I've heard that story about Kath also, but we'd probably have to dig into some old rock magazines archives to find it - if. I've also heard the Gibbons one. Do you know of video/footage you mention of him saying it. Would like to see it. But truth be told, and this has nothing to do with who likes who better, talent wise Kath was a force. Much all around better player and technically better guitarist than Gibbons.

Chicago's original lineup included James Pankow on trombone, Lee Loughnane on trumpet and Walt Parazaider on sax and woodwinds. His flute solo on "Colour My World" is probably his most famous flute performance, but he was also phenomenal with the flute on the multiple movement suites "It Better End Soon" and "Memories Of Love". All of those songs appear on Chicago's eponymous second album along with "25 Or 6 To 4".

@@keithroberts4952 Only Lamm, Loughnane and Pankow are with Chicago and touring. Parazaider retired from touring for health problems. Kath died, Cetera quit, and Seraphine was fired, so only 3 original members are still performing with Chicago.

The singer on this song is Peter cetera who also is their bassist. The other singers include Robert lamm, the keyboardist and Terry Kath, the guitarist.
Losing Terry Kath in ‘78 was very sad time for guitar lovers!
Best guitar solo all time. Terry Kath and the entire band were high level musicians.
The early Chicago Transit Authority was incredible. Terry Kath, the lead guitarist was one of the kings of the Stratacaster, or Telecaster, or anything he picked up. If you have time you might check out Grand Funk Railroad's live 1969 song "Inside Looking Out". Grand Funk Railroad was a three piece power band in the early years who added a member and changed the direction of their music much like Chicago did. The early music is their best. The song is a remake of the Animals 1966 song.

Loved Chicago as a teenager! Today I am truly blown away by their talent.
This is one of the greatest live guitar solos ever. I was fortunate to see Chicago at Fillmore East a few weeks before the Tanglewood show. Terry Kath was on fire that night too. RIP guitar wizard.

Some years ago Terry's daughter made a movie about he dad (Terry Kath)..........for you who didn't know.
To me it's more like the first record (Chicago Transit Authority) is more like a Terry Kath record. He don't get so much space for his guitar on the records they are named just Chicago.

You should definitely checkout Blood Sweat and Tears -- they were another very popular band for whom the horn section was integral; front and center, like Chicago. They didn't necessarily *sound* like Chicago, but they were *very* jazz and blues flavored. They had some phenomenal players. Both bands even had a common producer in James Guercio during their early careers.

Thank you for enjoying Chicago! They are finally in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Years later I got to meet some of the members. Even after Terry Kath died and Peter Cetera left, they still played great concerts for decades. Very professional. ❤

Chicago has always been one of my favorite groups. I just love all the horns, and they are just so amazing. Come to think of it, just about any group I can think of with the same name as a state or city in America is amazing.

If I were coming in fresh to check out Chicago, I’d start at the beginning: first song on the first album. Album is ‘Chicago Transit Authority’; song is “Introduction”, and that’s just what it is. Written by guitarist Terry Kath, it rotates through the different styles the band uses. The musicianship is incredible, the song is astonishing. The whole album is astonishing. How many bands do you know that release a double album for their debut? Start with “Introduction” and keep going! Just a suggestion. Thank you!
Their later album without horns was produced by David Foster. He added strings. They felt lost. Peter Cetera left so the group had to reinvent themselves. Today, with the same 3 horn players and keyboardist still perform with newer people as members.

Not sure how many times I've watched this one but it's always a great as the first time. Terry is simply amazing, this solo is a great example. I actually watched a lot of this concert last night (again).

Robert is a bit of glue here, Terry is playing himself into another realm and Peter still acting like a lead singer, before his head inflated… horn section bringin in everyone..Danny just wants his drum kit set up correctly! I saw them live in concert right before we lost Terry, I’m so grateful to have seen him live!

The singer is Peter Cetera recovering from a broken jaw... yet still is amazing! He also plays bass. Danny Sarafine is the drummer, what ch him in the old black and white version of 'I'm a Man". Unreal! The brass is Lee Lochne on trumpet, Walt Parazader on sax and Jimmy Panko on trombone. Also Robert Lamm on keyboards. The guitar legend is Terry Kath. Who passes from an accidental gunshot to the head in 1978. Chicago was NEVER the same. TERRY sand bass/baratone, Peter sang Tenor and Robert had that smooth mid voice. Together they were like no other. ❤ Jodi

This was performed in July 1970...over 53 years ago....let that sink in. It was my first album purchased from money I earned selling Grit Newspapers at 12 years old, and I wore out the album.
There is an excellent documentary you can watch for free on CZcams called “Chicago: The Terry Kath Experience”. It’s all about Terry’s life and death, as well as the story of Chicago. One of the best documentaries on a musician you’ll see.
When a reporter asked Jimi Hendrix how it felt to be the worlds greatest guitarist he replied " You'll have to ask that cat in Chicago". They played my high school graduation dance.

Here are a few more great horns: " Heart of Rock & Roll" by Huey Lewis and the News with the Tower of Power Horns ( saw them live in the 80's.) Bob Seger's great friend who was amazing on Sax: Alto Reed. In addition, David Bowie and Eddie Money both played Sax. Styx uses brass and Daryl Hall & John Oats' incredible sax player Charles DeChant ( check out the video of "Maneater. Back in the 60's and 70's , The Rolling Stones had Bobby Keys on "Brown Sugar" and a bunch of other songs. There's a bunch for you to check out. Love your reactions.
About the time this song came out Chicago was playing at the Whiskey, and a guy came up to one of them and said, you're drummer is great , and your guitar player is better than me.
It was Jimi Hendrix. He loved them. When a lot of young guitar players would feel threatened and competitive, Jimi was different. Heard that before? Jimi invited them on tour with him.

Never gets old
In the late 60's to the mid 80's there were only a few bands with this kind of sound. Chicago was the best known. They were straight ahead rock n roll, Blood Sweat and Tears who were more of a jazz/blues style of rock, and in Canada we had a group called Lighthouse they were more of a soft rock n roll group. Their hits included "Sunny Days" "One Fine Morning" "Little Kind Words" "Broken Guitar Blues" and many more.
Rock is like a gemstone, it has many facets. Each facet representing Jazz Rock, Hard Rock, Pop Rock, Progressive Rock, Punk Rock, Folk Rock, Psychedelic Rock, etc

You should look into The Average White Band! from the 70’s. Also Level 42 from the 80’s Both have brass instruments . Going back before Chicago is Blood Sweat and Tears a Band from the 60’s .

Yeah, good call on doing this version also.
And actually it is a horn section not a brass section. It's got a trumpet, a trombone, and a saxophone, looks to me like an alto sax. Those guys are such a key part of the band and Chicago is known for their horn section especially in the early years.
They have so much good material from back then, but I would recommend Feeling Stronger Every Day, I have a feeling you would really enjoy it.

@@Rockmusicpodcast oh yeah, you can't go wrong with early chicago, they did change a lot of personnel and kind of dropped most of the horn section later on in their career so most hardcore fans really like the early stuff like the one you just did today. But yeah the one I told you about is great but there are so many. Saturday in the park, does anybody care what time it is, make me smile,. But for some reason I feel like you would love feeling stronger everyday. It's just so powerful. And all of it features that incredible horn section.
Well, 2 out of 3 of the horns are brass, and as Meat Loaf says, that ain't bad. And though saxophones are woodwinds, they're made of brass. So give the kid a break, man. 😀

At 3:35 or 3:34 in the AM while writing and playing a future song Coked out . They tried to decide on continuing doing coke or going to bed . Hence 25 or 6 to 4 ... Told by Terry Kath's wife who was there .

Black Country New Road are a contemporary rock band whose member include a saxophonist/flutist and Violinist. One of the better bands out right now.

If you love brass instruments, then you should check out Madness, or just about any group during the SKA period in the 90s. But Madness was well before the SKA times, and they were amazing.

If you like Chicago, check out "Blood, Sweat and Tears" another brass/rock band, or take a real dive into "United States of America" a lesser known brass/rock group. The 70's exploded with so much music it was impossible to take it all in.
Have you listened to Mad Dogs and Englishmen live? Joe Cocker, Leon Russel and both of their entire bands and back up singers. Very interesting story on how the whole thing lined up and how they lost a ton of money on that concert but it's so awesome. There's a ton of talent involved. I bought the DVD as soon as I found out it existed.
So if you like the sound of brass, take a moment to listen to big band sound. They old bands had to have a big, full sound. Most bands played live in big halls because all of the crowd danced to the music. So these bands had to fill these rooms with a lot of sound. Just take listen, now you won't like the tempo of their theme songs, its more subtle. Glad you've had a chance to hear my music that I grew up with. Keep hearing good music.
The horn section of Chicago came from Depaul U. so they were highly trained musicians. Jimi Hendrix said of Terry Kath (guitar player) that he was the greatest guitar player in the universe. This was no garage band. They spent their beginning time playing motown classics because that's what you had to do to get hired by clubs back then. There was no equivalent band to them music wise. Too bad Terry Kath died at a young age. They became a lot more of a love song band after he passed on.

If you like brass in a rock bands then check out Delaney & Bonnie and Friends at A&R RADIO Live with the Duane and Greg Allman along with King Curtis. Pull up Only You Know and I Know or the whole set is good. You will find as you attempt to cover rock from 50 years ago or so that there is literally hundreds of this caliber of performers. here's another one... try a thirty year old cover by Loggins and Messina, You need a Man. This is a live performance titled Sittin' In Again 2005. Loggins and Messina Live listed on CZcams,3 kickers from that show... You Need Am Man, VAHEVALA, and Angry Eyes

Good choice for a reaction. They were my favorite band growing up as a teen in the 70's. You're right, the horns in a rock band made them stand out from most of the other bands. There are a lot of good choices from all of their early albums.

Derek Trucks of Tedeschi Trucks is the son of Allman Brothers drummer( passed away 2017) Butch Trucks. As mentioned went to Berklee with Susan Tedeschi played with her at Johnny D's Blues Jam( Sommerville Ma) many times. She was very sweet, always nice to everyone.
I know for a fact she is heavily influenced by many Black blues and Soul artsts so grosskey overlooked on reaction channels. Etta James, Aretha Franklin ( both also have horn sections) In fact just about every artsts you have reacted to have the same type influences..

Yeah, this song is awesome today. I believe they opened for Jimi Hendrix's "Band of Gypsies in" 1969. But, it's terrible that Terry Kath (Jimi Hendrix proclaimed him better) got messed up on drugs and accidently killed himself with gun play.
