Great reaction - now you know exactly how we felt the first time we ever heard Van Halen in 1978. Exactly like that. Our jaws were dropping to the floor. And this is actually off of their very first album that came out almost a decade before this performance.
I saw them on that tour when I was in 9th grade and it totally blew my mind. That was a hard rocking show and we were all just so rowdy; people even smuggled bongs in and quarts of whiskey and so forth. It was insane. People were even shooting off bottle rockets. He did Eruption not quite like that but still really long and of course it drove the audience crazy.
But it's strange to think I was in a venue that was small by today's standards. I bet the maximum capacity there was about 3,000 people. Maybe 4,000.
And to think that all four of them were incredible and now you see what happens when you put them together and why they actually started taking over in the late 70s. And you've got Eddie bringing those chops in every song they did, so now you can see why they packed a wallop.
That first album got played constantly all the time and every song on it got time on the radio. To me it's one of the most iconic albums in rock and it's an incredible debut album along with the first Boston album.
You could pull any song from it and it would be fire. Check out Ain't Talkin Bout Love and Show Your Love from their first album. The first one is just such a solid song and it was a massive massive radio hit. I heard Show Your Love on the radio a lot too but in that one it's Eddie once again just going insane on those licks and harmonics but the whole song is at an incredible breakneck pace, and the drums are doing a super-fast swing thing that is so driving. And then in the end they even managed to slip in a bit of doo-wop barbershop quartet stuff, laugh. And of course all through the album, David Lee Roth is hilarious but a great singer.
Something to be aware of that you could either react to or just check out for your own pleasure, is that on the album, this Eruption guitar solo is pretty short, like maybe two minutes or something and then it leads directly into their cover of The Kinks song, Girl You Really Got Me Now. This too was a massive radio hit and they almost always played them back-to-back together. And because Eruption is so short and the main song isn't all that long, it works really really well. But for those of us used to hearing Eruption on the album, It's unthinkable not to hear Girl You Really Got Me immediately on its heels! The guitar solo sets it up just perfectly.

Eddie was one of a kind... there will never be another player like him again...his originality, his virtuosity, his rhythm playing and sense of groove... his ability with guitar and amp manufacturing... forget it... he completely changed the every aspect of what modern guitar playing is on it's best day. I feel bad for people too young to have seen him live especially back in the day... he was the greatest.

One thing I've noticed about this performamce is that when we listen to what Eddie plays, the harmonies he uses aren't always discernable or easy to predict like most songs we hear regardless of genre. There is an obvious classical influence in his solo, but a lot of it just seems to flow freely and the harmonies are not what we would normally expect, almost verging on strange or dislikeable (some other reactors have mentionned this) only to then be perfectly wrapped up and start to make sense as he continues; they seem to be a completely free flow of musicality from Eddie's mind without any other influence which is very interesting.
And we see how connected he is with his sound as whenever he manipulates a screaming sound from his guitar, he opens his mouth as if screaming himself, as he uses the guitar as his voice in a giant display of a plethora of sound and texture. It's by far one of the best examples of pure and natural musicality I believe I will ever see in my lifetime and it's a privilege to witness someone so connected to their craft. RIP Eddie.

Eddie took over the guitar world almost a decade before this concert. In 1978, Van Halen's first album came out, and it was amazing. There was an intro to one of their songs that was a guitar solo named Eruption, and no one had heard anything like it. Later, his guitar solo in concerts became known as eruption.

Let me interject, the biggest difference between Rock and Rap for instance is that rock offers instrumentation that continues to sing and speak where the vocalist stops.
And in rap music, well simply put they just sample the best parts of all the rock songs to put in their own music, that should tell you something. 🤟

Let me tell you, it was even more impressive (and phucking LOUD) sitting 8th row center stage on the floor. I was at this show at the New Haven Coliseum on August 27, 1986. The smoke from Eddie’s constant cigarettes was nothing compared to the pot smoke in that place. Most of this concert was released on VHS and later on DVD, although it’s not the entire concert. This tour was a huge deal because everyone wondered what Van Halen would be like live without David Lee Roth, and they were incredible. I’d seen them on every tour with Roth, and it was very obvious that Eddie, Alex & Michael were having a lot more fun with Sammy Hagar. It also helped the sound of the band that Sammy was a great guitarist too, not as good as Eddie of course, but he was quite good.

OMG their concerts were so loud, you ain't exaggerating! I saw them once with Roth and once with Hagar, both were the same. Sometimes it would take me a while to figure out what they were playing lol. But I wouldn't have missed it. ( I saw them in New Haven with Hagar in the '90s, and that place was notorious for bad acoustics.)

@@k_salter The acoustics at New Haven coliseum were bad if you were up in the aisles, but on the floor it was right in your face. The Van Halen show was extremely loud, but it was crystal clear. I also saw the Scorpions there in 1985 and it was extremely loud but there was so much bass that you could hear the vocals. I was at the 1983 US Festival in California, and even though it was outdoors, Van Halen was still ridiculously loud, even louder than Judas Priest or Ozzy. The loudest show I ever saw Deep Purple at Madison Square Garden in 1984, I had to read lips the rest of the night after leaving that show, and the next day all I could hear was a loud high pitched screaming sound that was continuous. I’m sure there are a lot of musicians who have severe hearing loss, unless they have been wearing the best ear plugs for decades they must have trouble hearing.

I wish that back then I was more appreciative of the shows I saw, and the thousands of incredible shows I didn't but were everywhere. I didn't think great bands would ever go from so many of them to very few great bands. The only good concerts for me nowadays are the older bands from the 80s and 70s. And unfortunately, no one is immortal. We're losing more and more of them every day. RIP The Great Edward Van Halen

@@Rockmusicpodcast You're right about that but it also means that I'm gonna be dead a lot sooner...so I guess we're even. 😂 But I'm so happy to be witnessing the passing of the torch yet again. I was born in the late 60s so all that great music had to be passed to my generation, and on it goes. So glad you're on board with us. Maybe you'll pick up a guitar and change the world one day like Eddie did. You sure have the hair! 🤘🏻🤘🏻Rock on brother 🤘🏻🤘🏻

King Edward reignited hard rock music and was the iconic player who inspired millions. At their best, I have yet to see a better hard rock concert than Van Halen and they had to prove their rightful place in 1983 when they headlined the US Festival with rock's biggest rock/metal acts in front of over 300K. So glad you could appreciate Eddie's mastery. He is greatly missed!

Hi! Since you're taking a look at some great musicians, you should listen to the "greatest guitarist no one knows"-the legendary Rory Gallagher. Rory is held in high esteem by many musicians (Slash, Brian May, the Edge)and was courted by the Rolling Stones. Take a listen to "Tatoo'd Lady" from the 1979 Rockpalast performance. Incidentally, if you start down the rabbit hole of watching Rory's incredible live performances, you'll see he used tapping back in the early '70s.

There are absolutely unique individuals that carry through human history....king lionidis,William Wallace, Leonardo da Vinci,Albert Einstein and then came EDDIE VAN HALEN.the only guitarist I know that can take feedback and play a tune out it,that's when he's using the volume control to make it sound like a cello.

Eddie was a phenomenal guitar player, when he came onto the LA scene he blew away all the other so called “great” guitarists. He raised the bar ten levels!! My guitar teacher loves his style. If you like shredding, I highly suggest you watch Nita Strauss 2 videos/songs Dead Inside and the Wolf You Feed. I’m positive you and your Mom will be impressed by her guitar playing 😊 👍. She is considered one of the best female guitarists today. Check them out!!

Brings me back to freshman year, English class & oral presentations. The chick before me did hers on the temperature of fruits, wtf? lol so I had lost the crowd. Proud me, i bring in & hang a giant poster of Van Halen, boombox planted on teacher's desk &my presentation went on for about 17 mins til the teacher cut me off lol We were rocking & thanks to Cream magazine, I could answer any question like a boss😎 I got an A- (she said the minus was for the fact I made EVERYTHING about rock music)... like that's a bad thing lol Although I do admit in Shop class, everything I made had a Stones tongue hahaa
I recently went to carnival & won a giant inflatable guitar in red, so took it home and taped it up to look like Eddie's & it's proudly displayed in my "lady lair" ❤
Just loved this reaction, your face was much like mine the first time I ever heard them!! Keep rockin!!❤✌🤘
