The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Excellent! Before Keith Emerson, the world watched Peter Nero making this great meeting between Jazz and Classical.

A rare video in which we get to see Ray Bloch and his Orchestra on stage; usually they accompany the acts offstage. Also, an early appearance by Peter!

Love the quotes from Beethoven ("Waldstein Sonata") and Mozart ("Rondo alla Turca"). Great player!

So much talent and such a brilliant interpretation. Sad to hear Peter Nero passed away on July 6 - nice obituary in NYTimes.

A piano virtuoso! His style reminds me some of the wonderful Carmen Cavallaro...

I loved the shot of the audience, you didn't see that that much on the show. All those conservatively dressed men and women in 1965 grinning away at hearing Gershwin played that way. 😅

Funny thing about that audience shot - to me it looks like it's from at least 10 years later - and I was around for both years.
The wide neckties I see were not in fashion yet in '65.

@@MooPotPie I see what you mean... and the color is very different too. I bet there was a problem with the original video and they had to patch it up.

I almost didn’t recognize him minus his facial hair…😂. Great artist and entertainer. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic. I remember his name but not hearing him play. Solid upbeat tempo, he really wails on that 12 foot Steinway at breakneck speed. Great orchestra, great rhythm section, solid performance all around. Funny shot of the audience near the end, was it not played live?

    • @SnoopyReads

Sounds like shit, playing too fast ironically stripped the rhythm out of the song

Not to pick nits here, but most concert grands -- certainly all Steinway "D"s -- are nine feet in length.... 🎼🎶🎹🙏
