This song was #1 in the US when I was a little boy. It always reduced everyone to tears.
I was small when this made number 3 in the UK ; back then the "British invasion" of the US was over and not to many stars outside of the established ones made the US charts and the last artist I ever would have thought would break into the US chart was Gilbert O'Sullivan . Years later I read the novel "Virgin Suicides"-a US novel and it had one passage where the boys phoned the girls and they were playing "Alone Again" and they said it wasn't something to listen to if suicidal. I thought -right, but I also thought that no US reader would get the connection until I saw a documentary on GOS and my ignorance was blown away-6 weeks at number one in the US and still a remembered and played classic ! I had no idea. GOS didn't fit into any genre, he was just GOS .
I was probably in 5th or 6th grade (1972-ish) when I got my first transistor radio of my own. This was the big song on top-40 radio at the time. A time of some pretty great music, and in retrospect, some pretty kitschy stuff too.
@@josephcote6120 Absolutely, those times truly will never ever be replicated! As a child great times!!
@@infrasleep I was trying ti figure out what GOS is. Gilbert O' Sullivan yes? I remember this song as a kid in the U.S., it had very regular airtime on the radio and I loved it.
I'm in my 50s and it got me.
I was 12 years old when I first heard this song when it came out, It put tears in my eyes back then, and after all these years, it still does.
Same. No matter how I try, I cry on various levels. Sometimes a lot, other times a little.
Such an upbeat tune for such desperately sad lyrics. This one always touched me.
The happy public face of private desperation. Those of us who are friends with our depression know it all to well.
a true rarity...a snappy sad song.
I love this song
One of the best Verses ever written for any song in music history!
" Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally" XXXX
amazing song. also incredibly sad aswell.
i never tire of it
We lost our beloved momma, 1 year ago. Momma loved this song so much. Listening to this song has us all crying so hard, thinking about our beautiful momma. Thank you for the memories. Momma this song is dedicated in your memory. RIP- MOMMA.
I can definitely relate, my mom died in 2000, my father died in 2013, and I still cry for them.
I'm 60 yrs old and this song has been on my playlist forever. The genius of the song is a cheerful melody and beat, coupled with such a sad but "acceptance" lyric. You said it "what will be will be"
I still love this sad little song.
He does another one called, Claire. It's a beautiful song.
Makes me CRY every time I hear it. Reminds me of my Mommy and Daddy ❤️
It came out in '71. I thought it was the prettiest, saddest song I had ever heard, and then he did Claire, which made up for it. He disappeared from the music scene very quickly. Alone Again (Naturally) was a huge hit for him.
My favorite and most meaningful line in this song is..... " It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world that can't be mended, left unattended. What do we do? What do we do?
This was a hit in my childhood and i always thought it was just a well written song. When my beloved dad passed away i heard it again and it simply made me cry all day
Me too..lost all my family 2017 up till 2021.. I'm all alone now
.😭😢😥
@@michaelbusch8587I'm sorry me too really small family
Thank you, I have loved this song since the 70s, often brings tears to my eyes, so much sadness. Beautifully written and performed
Yes one of those songs, like Seasons In The Sun, that bring back bittersweet memories of childhood.
Gilbert is one of the greatest story tellers ever!!!!
She gives a beautiful sincere reaction. Thank you!
I love that you play a lot of 70's music. A great decade of music. Your reactions are so natural as well, you really get into the music but also you get the music.
Ur such a pleasant lady. I really enjoy watching and listening to you. Your analysis are quite adept as well. Great job.
Thank you Hun
Yes, I'm glad I found KSO.
Fantastic irish song writer
Reminds me of my mom. " and when she passed away, I cried and cried all day"
Yes, I understand we lost, our beloved mom, one year ago. I still cry everyday myself, my mom was not only mom, but my best friend. I am sorry for your loss. I know our moms are in heaven, looking down upon us everyday. God bless.
Heartbreak is so hard to overcome, but you do your best. I do like this song, and the great instrumentals. Gilbert is telling it like it is! Sad, but time will help heal. God bless these people going through hard times!!
This song is about loss and what it can do to a person. At the very beginning he is talking about committing suicide because his fiance left him at the altar.
For years, I taught suicide awareness classes to 9-1-1 operators, and I always played this song as part of the training.
I was 10 years old when I first heard this song. I cried when I listened to it. I am now 62 years old, and I still cry when I hear it.....😢
I think that in the end the song tells the overcoming of a trauma, because at first the narrator is thinking about committing suicide by jumping from a tower but then he remembers the example of his mother, who prematurely lost the only man she had loved in her life after having managed to marry him, and he feels comforted, on the one hand because his mother was able to overcome the pain without committing suicide and on the other because he realizes that, even if he had managed to marry that day, sooner or later one of the couple would die leaving the other alone, being a much greater sorrow, like his father's death for his mother and him. That is why he concludes thinking that, after all, the inevitable is to be left alone.
Therefore, although he does not say it openly, the clear conclusion is that he will not commit suicide and life will go on.
That's why the song isn't so sad after all.
I remember when this song was a top hit.
I am singing along...remember his lovely songs and the voice that sounded so warm and melancoly...Gilbert♥️
A 70's classic ' played all day on the radio back then.
Wonderful song.
One of the greatest songs of all time by Gilbert O'Sullivan just amazing excellent by the way here in Venezuela in the 1970's the group Los Tres Tristes Tigres made a great cover of this song with the title Solo Otra Vez
Heartbreakingly beautiful song.
..... We always have to remember when it was composed ......70's ........ the inspirations were different ......... however ..... ...... the music is simply beautiful .......... the power music is in it ........ emotion ........ Top of the US charts for 6 months .............
I always loved this song even though it is so sad. but beautiful.
Such a great song but so incredibly sad. It, sometimes brings me to tears.
A real tear jerker if ever there was one.
I don’t know why I love sad songs so much
One of my all time favorite songs.
I'm tears listen this beautiful classic song😢😭
I beautifully crafted song that brought tears to my 12 year old self... And I have never been able to forget it... Everybody, sooner or later goes through a stretch in their lives that you feel totally alone.... But as all things in life, it passes.
amazing artist full stop.
I think rather than “happy”, it was the realization that losing our parents is the natural order of things. I still feel like an orphan, even 11 years after being “alone again, naturally”.
I love these easy going songs . Great melodies.
Many. You have a Beautiful Smile and Good taste in music!😁😎😂😁
This song always reminds me of my departed parents.
Love this song. He sounds like Paul McCartney in this recording.
SAD, but well written and one of the best acoustic guitar solos in a song that I've ever heard!!!
Thanks for reacting to this. One of my mom's favorite songs, she passed in 72. Love when the tears are real.
Such a sad but beautiful song.
I just love your sweet kind heart and love for beauty! God bless you!
Empty Chairs, by Don McLean is another sad, but brilliant classic!
Such a great songwriter. ❤️🥁
Gilbert is great ! He also did some very upbeat songs like Matrimony and Ooh Wakaday , but another sad song with some thought provoking lyrics is called Nothing Rhymed .
Nothing Rhymed is a great song!
Love this song! Brings tears to my eyes.
Love it! Thanks for your sincere comments 🙂
Sad but beautiful song. The saddest song for me is "Heartbreaker", which was sung by Dionne Warwick, and written by Barry Gibb, of the Bee Gees. Warwick hated that song, that she "cried all the way to the bank". Again, a sad, but beautiful song. As for Barry Gibb, he experienced 5 heartbreakers : burying his 3 brothers and 2 parents.
This is the best reaction video i have seen , you dont need to stop the track to tell us how you are feeling as your face is so expressive well done
I probably was 11 or so but this is one of my first memories of music. Just a great song
I always thought this was a Paul McCartney song when it came on the radio.
Me too, initially.
@@JS-Jms I think it might be how the Irish learn the Piano - a lot from Ireland went to Liverpool and took their style with them.
@@highpath4776 Yes. But also in the voice. Very similar to Paul's.
great song.. deep lyrics.
I’ve loved that sing since I was was a kid , and all these years till now I’ve never truly listened to the words so I never knew knew this was such a sad song..wow.
GILBERT est vraiment un super compositeur !...
Noting Rymed is another classic
Thank You. I still play this song and a lot of memories always flood my mind. I can relate to some of the lyrics as we all can. I found out the hard way that God is the only one that will never leave me or forsake me.Music always helps. I love your channel.
Gilbert is a great story teller, try Clair.
Yes. Wonderful song.
Storytelling through music is a rare talent, especially if its done right
Clair is a song about him being a creep 🤢
@@slimgym45 you nonce course it’s not
Gilbert O'Sullivan in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.
One of my favorite songs, such a
Best reaction to this song. You actually got it.
2021. Every breakup or tragedy I've endured, I always go back to this song. Great reaction KSO. 😎💥🙏
Your analysis is the only one ive heard that sticks to the facts. Most people are so taken aback they don't think about what they're saying and talk crap.
In addition to my comments below, Gilbert is so unique and is still sing, writing and touring. I just watched an interview wit him online. Thanks for your great reaction. Again, please check out his first big hit Nothing Rhymed.
Gilbert's a fabulously Brilliant lyricist who manages to hit the hearts of his audience who then interprate in a way that feels meaningful to them but performs it in a contradictory up beat melancholy way..
He tells a lifetimes story in 3 minutes with fantastic skill..
👏👏👏 BRAVO 👏👏👏
Sincerely K.S.O. , you are truly a graceful and elegant lady!🙏🏻🌞🌹
Gilbert back on the telly today, but see his own reaction in Oct 2020 to his first single hit - Nothing Rhymed. Also for an upbeat track check out "Get Down"
Sad, sad song. Thumbs up!
number 1 New York city summer of 71 !
KSO - what you said is true. What will be will be. Songs should be about life and sometimes, life will include times when we all experience sadness resulting from loneliness.
Help & hope to everyone who has lost loved one's in their life ❤
Amazing Song!!
Beautiful music, sad lyrics. He's not whining when sings it, its like he's telling his story.
In the 70‘ every Jukebox played his Songs again and again...,
This is a so so sad song yet it make me feel good when I listen to. Been in my playlist since I discovered it in The Virgin Suicide by Sofia Copola .
I love this song. But its especially devestating when one experiences all that the song is about..... Never ending. :(
Great loss and hurt is something that all of us as caring human beings have to endure now and then throughout our life times. Hopefully we eventually heal each time. I try to remember that when dealing with people. We need to treat each other kindly, we really don't know what pain each other has has to endure.
I love sad songs.
Get Down....by Gilbert O'Sullivan
That was the first 45 I bought with my own money as a child! Still have it!
The song really is about his dog while he was trying to write a song, and the dog kept getting on him, getting on the way, wanting attention!!!
You can tell it struck Gilbert funny and whatever song he was trying for, he kept a piece of it in there : "Once upon a time, I drank a little wine, was as happy as could be, happy as could be . . ."
A sad song but well delivered. This song was NUMBER 1 for several weeks on the Billboard charts. His followed up was Claire. Love your critiques and feedback.
Sincerely K.S.O., I watch a lot of these reaction posts and you are by far the best. Keep going with more great music from my era.
I appreciate that Hunni
People often thought this song was about himself, but according to him, he made it all up. His mother is alive and none of those things happened. This is what I told you about on the Jim Morrison vid, Riders on the Storm, that writer/ poets often make things up and there isnt always a hidden meaning to the verses. I heard Gilbert talk about this in a biographical type documentary, right here on the tube.
One of the best songs ever written 🎵 🎶
I just found your channel and have been binge watching since. I love your reviews. This is one of my absolute favorite songs. I love it so much and it makes me cry every single time. 😥❤ when I saw you do a review of this song I couldnt wait to hear what you thought. Have a great day!
.......BACK THEN 1976 I WAS 16 ....NOW I AM 60 AND MAKES ME FEEL THE SAME WAY...SO SAD!
DAMN, I still can't listen to this all the way through. This song came out about a month after my Mom died just 2 days after my 13th birthday. This song hits WAY TOO CLOSE FOR ME mentally and it still takes me back to when I was 13 (I'm almost 60 now) and cried like a damn baby. I was actually feeling all alone then and still do if I TRY to listen to it. I made almost half way and still had to stop listening to it.
Try "Hurt" by the great Timi Yuro. Its so powerfully moving. Loved your reaction to Alone Again. My brother and I used to sing this in the 70's. We would always have tears in our eyes!! Thank You.
Typical example of a song more appreciated in the States as in Europe. Due to the arrangement, the melody and his voice. Before this he was unknown in America.
Of course I love the song but, loved even more your heartfelt reaction to it!
Great tune but it couldn't get any sadder then these lyrics. "Vincent" by Don McLean is right there with "Alone Again" IMO.
@J OneLife You do know Don McLean is American born?
KSO, I know you listen to the lyrics intensely and debate them after the song, but I don't think you heard the opening lines. I can tell this by your lack of reaction. He was suicidal after being stud up in the church. Easily missed.. I love your channel, keep up the great reviews.
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying: "My God, that's tough"
"She stood him up"
"No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play?
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God in His mercy
Who if He really does exist
Why did He desert me?
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that there are more hearts
Broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
Hi Glenn, I agree so much with you. That quiet desperation and hopelessness is exactly what I have always heard in this song - emotional isolation, gone beyond despair. And, all the while, life chugs along, "getting over it", "moving on". And GO"S wrote this in 1970s!
Try Perry Como .Its Impossible, one of the great ballads
A Classic! Beautiful arrangement.
One of the best reactions ever, very thoughtful...
be careful and listen carefully, Gilbert O'Sullivan is a great artist!
I heard this song I was young I loved it I didn't know the words to this song. Apparently it's a sad song
Gilbert O’Sullivan is a genius singer/songwriter who had a huge amount of hits in the UK. Check out his first big hit Nothing Rhymed.
It is such a sad song 😞
This song always made me very SAAAD😭; I haven't listened to it in years!
(But I'll give anything a go that YOU do a reaction for, Honey💕)
Marcella Cumberbatch oh yes Honey by Bobby Goldsboro..if you thought alone again is sad you will be bawling 🥺🥺🥺🥺
@@jjnyc4610 Ohhhhh Heck YEAH.....
"Honey" is the SADDEST song in the entire universe!!!😭🤯😭
