  • Former Beatle Pete Best joins Elaine & Anton to tell them about the legendary band!
"There are fans who know more about 'The Beatles' than I do!"
When asked about how he felt about his departure from 'The Beatles', he tells Elaine and Anton that there was "a lot of anger about at the time."
He tells them there has been no communication between him and his former band mates.
"They have gone their way and I have gone mine."

I really think Paul and Ringo should invite Pete to a performance to acknowledge his early efforts and possibly allow him to perform with them as a 'what could've been' type moment. It would be the perfect bookend for him and the Beatles story.

Pete to me is a Beatles time capsule. That period of the Beatles is best told by Pete, in my opinion. The others have their famous period that somewhat skews their pre-fame stories. I feel like Pete is the guy they left behind as the historian of that time period. The ghost of Beatles past so to speak. He was a Beatle at the pivotal time in their career-from the time they were nobody, to the time where they got popular and noticed. The fact that he didn't participate in their famous period makes his stories sound more real to me. He can talk about Stu and Alan Williams and the conditions they worked in. Great stuff.

First, Pete wasn't a bad drummer. He just wasn't unique. Ringo had a very, very distinctive style. Which meant the Beatles would have yet another unique sound to their music.
Second, Pete didn't have as much variety, nor did he feel his way through each song. Ringo was capable of giving each song its own drumming pattern, and its own drum hook.
Third, Pete wasn't a human metronome, and Ringo was. Later, George Martin remarked that they had never had to do another take because of Ringo.
Fourth, Pete missed a number gigs, and Ringo was always there when they needed him.
Fifth, in concert, Pete was a powerful drummer who liked the spotlight and drum solos. Ringo hated drum solos, and saw himself in a supporting role, allowing the rest of the band to do their thing.

@@bieituns I get the whole "he wasn't the best durmmer in the Beatles" is in jest (I hope), but let's give this little joke some validity for the sake of fun. First off, who was a better drummer in the group do you think? I couldn't even picture John or George on the sticks. The only other member who could use a set was Paul, and from his repertoire, I can't say I was ever as in awe with his drumming as I was with Ringo's. Paul plays drums on The Ballad of John and Yoko and the drumming on that song is so drab and uninspired, so much so that it's actually the only aspect of that song which I don't like. Ringo was not just a technically astute drummer, he was also like a human metronome, always on beat. But what truly set him apart was how absolutely ingenius he was. With his cheeky little fills and varied style of playing, he ultimately gave each Beatles song a new dimension and a sense of depth. Take any of these songs for reference and tell me that Ringo and Ringo's style of playing doesn't improve them:
      Rain
      Come Together
      She Said She Said

@@thehighllama8101 There's a reason Pete struggled with that infamous EMI recording of, "Love Me Do". When the Beatles arrived at the studio that day George Martin wasn't there. The Beatles played, "Love Me Do", among 3 other songs, for the engineers running the audition. The engineers were impressed enough to send for Martin. Once George Martin listened to, "Love Me Do", he abruptly changed the arrangement, ditching the skip-beat that Pete had been playing all along in the clubs. This threw Pete off! To be fair it would have thrown off Ringo too as well as any other Liverpool drummer. Paul didn't like it either, it threw off his vocals. EMI engineer, Norman Smith, who worked the session summed it up by saying, "The problem wasn't with how Pete was playing, but rather with the new arrangement he was being told to play." Most Beatle fans don't know the history of the song "Love Me Do". They just hear the below average demo on Anthology and blame Pete Best.
Regarding your comment about songs like Ticket to Ride, Rain, etc...I agree with you. Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles, but he had the opportunity to grow with the band in the studio and had the benefit of multiple re-takes.

The Beatles themselves have changed the story a number of times. The latest one Paul tells is "we always wanted Ringo" which isn't true at all. Ringo was approached after a number of other drummers turned them down. Bobby Graham, Ritchie Galvin and Johnny Hutchinson each were offered the job and they turned it down. So at the very least they SETTLED on Ringo. He wound up fitting in very well in the end but had any of the other 3 who were offered took the job......I think Pete knows more of why he was sacked and he isn't telling. One thing that is true is that around the time he was sacked his mother gave birth to a child fathered by Neil Aspinal. (named Roag) I think this was definitely part of it. I am not sure it was his playing because to tell the truth, they were no better than he was! All of them were amateurs. Overall the story is a stinky one.

They had gigs to forefill, and had no Drummer!
    Without pete possibly no Beatles!

At 75 years old, I'm truly sick of this ex drummer Pete Best whining endlessly about his being let go by the Beatles. Also, a little sick of those that continue to interview him. Poor pathetic man, should just let it be.
