I also want to mention the possibility of a gift card to a local tailor :) Most people have some items in their wardrobe that doesnt fit their body like it's supposed to and probably not something most people would take the money to do for themselves and it's of course sustainable as well as supporting local crafters
My siblings and I have changed from gift giving to food making. Spending more time on appetizers, snacks, sweets, savouries is much more enjoyable both in the making and in the eating. Less stress for us all, more affordable, and little waste or stuff hanging around collecting dust. My favourite part of Christmas is now continuous grazing at the sideboard and relaxing watching movies, playing games, and chatting. Good for my wallet, if not my waistline.
@@MadeleineOlivia I’d also recommend the book “cradle to cradle” it’s about thinking about a product’s whole life cycle, and pairs well with sustainable thinking.
I love how you are so non-judgemental Maddie, but yet fearlessly promote sustainability, minimal living and veganism. One of the many reasons I love your videos!
My sister asked me for a native bee box for Christmas this year. Here in the US we have thousands of native species of bees and other pollinators. You can buy little wooden houses that come with reed tubes for them to lay their eggs in. The houses are cute and it makes a great gift for someone who’s into gardening or creating an urban wildlife habitat in their garden. The company I bought from was very knowledgeable and even sold bee attractant specific to certain kinds of native bees. Another thing that I think would make a great gift are cork leather items. I was with my mom and sister recently out shopping and we came across a store that specializes in imported Portuguese products. They had the most amazing cork handbags and wallets! The shop owner was also telling us about how sustainable and durable cork leather is. It’s a great vegan leather alternative because it’s renewable, natural, and compostable. So maybe another good “guy gift” would be a cork leather wallet.
One of my biggest tips for people who are doing secret Santa/gift exchanges like it is have everyone make a list of things they would like within the price limit and specifically people put down if there’s anything in particular they DON’T want. (It may sound kind of negative or ungrateful, but I promise you can phrase them in a positive way. For example, I kindly asked not to get decorative knick-knacks as I’m a minimalist in a very small space, and I much prefer to pick something out myself because most of the time people may not pick out something that’s quite my taste, and then I feel a bit guilty about giving it away). Lovely consumables like bath products, sustainable candles, and food are so underrated and fun to get people- I got my mum a little bottle of the Anthropologie Capri blue laundry oil to put on our wool dryer balls (she loves the scent) and she actually liked it much more I think than more expensive presents I’ve gotten her! It’s about thoughtfulness, I think.
We only do stockings at our house. I have a husband and adult son... I bought some chai tea from Eamon & Bec (youtubers) for the boys, and the chai candle for myself (smells divine!). I also bought tins of homemade shortbread from a local lady who bakes for the farmer's market and my son's favourite (but pricey) jam and a fig pear chutney for my husband. I also do chocolate and candy, a tree decoration (themed for this 2021's vaccines). Also got a couple key chains, a scorpion for my husband who is a scorpio, and a multi tool for my son.
Great video! :) as a librarian, I have to recommend the gift of a library card, especially instead of books! :) Lots of libraries offer gift cards for a year membership. It is really sustainable and you get access to soooo many books! 😍😁
I’m really curious about this one. I’m from Australia and library cards are free with no cost for membership. To my knowledge, the only point where you’d have to pay access is for things from academia (scholarly journal articles and books from universities). What’s the situation like where you’re from?
@@lauren2103 Yes - my thoughts/question too. Libraries are free in the UK. Most universities also have free day access (but not borrowing rights) for local residents.
Not me but my friend owns the company Rachel brooks art and it’s all about marine life, lots of stationary and cards as well as clothing and personalised art, and very thoughtful towards the environment :)
I'm sure you're getting a lot of questions & comments from your daily vids but something I always wonder when you talk about so many Cornish brands is HOW DO YOU FIND THEM!!! Maybe it's a dumb question but around where I live (DC USA), it feels like almost everywhere is a larger non-local business... any tips? Also I love these present ideas :) Some things I like to gift are hand-made fandom related gifts if there's something they're really into, coffee table books about something important to the person, a useful gift for a hobby of theirs, stationary/journals, handmade jewelry from Etsy... and for the more casual gifts that I give to coworkers and whatnot, I loooove to do "jar" gifts- decorating a jar and filling it w/ something fun like tea, homemade popcorn, mini muffins... I'm still trying to decide which I'll do this year :)
Absolutely agree with asking people for lists/what they want! Have been doing this and i keep a list of items i get for people that have asked previously and they say they always love getting the same / similar items each year as its what they want. Wishlists change and so i know what they prefer and when it comes to christmas day i get so giddy seeing their faces / messages. Fantastic guide this year Madeleine :D
@@MadeleineOlivia it does! I think some may think well where is the surprise in that but depending on what it is it can still be a surprise, but also at least they know they will like their presents xD thanks for ur reply and loving your vlogmas videos :D ur kitchen is stunning and absolute dream ♡
Definitely this. If a person doesn’t specify to me what they’d like, and I don’t already have an idea of what I know that person would like/need, I won’t buy a material gift at all. They will get maybe a gift card or a donation to a charity that’s important to them, since plenty of charities have ”gift” donation options where you can pick a card etc. Imo it’s not necessary to give something material just for the sake of it, since plenty of people already ”have everything”. Because even a sustainably made product is not a sustainable choice if the person doesn’t actually need or use it.
@@assiuuskallio2960 whole heartedly agree. I also don't buy material if i have no idea and they don't specify to me either. I used to feel guilty but now there is no guilt because if they wanted something they would say. 10 times out of 10 they don't say they want anything and thats ok.
Lots of good shouts! About the wine: it looks stunning, but I think if you’re in the UK or Europe, there’s no reason to buy wine from so far away, especially from a sustainability POV. My native region in Germany produces a LOT of wine, including Chardonnay 😉, and quite some sustainable and vegan brands (look for labels saying „vegan“/„bio“/„ökologischer Anbau“). I don’t doubt France and Italy have some bomb vegan wines too. I really see no reason to import wine from the other end of the world (unless you have a personal connection there) when you’re that well-supplied closer to home. 🙂🥂 Loved the skin care tips!
Thank you Maddie, I did buy The Growable Calendar as a Christmas gift for my friend, after watching your vlog from when you used it for your lovely kitchen herb selection 🥰
@martuchna82 how does the calendar work, please? They give you the seeds, then advise when to plant and how to care for? Do they put in the calendar later on that previous months’ seeds are ready to be planted out etc?
Thank you for these wonderful gift ideas! 😍I just adopted a sloth for my fiance's birthday (coming up this week) from the The Sloth Conservation Foundation. He's going to love the surprise 🙌
South Australian wine ? Perhaps it’s because I’m French but I cringed at the idea that this « sustainable » wine came from the other side of the world when there is so much organic options made in the European Union (hello neighbours). Love the rest of the suggestions though !!
It was a brand who kindly sent me some of their wine and I thought how lovely it was that they are working to reduce plastic pollution. But I understand if someone wouldn’t want to purchase Australian wine. I personally love Australian wine, and while I do buy lots of local wines, wanted to share this interesting company ❤️
So helpful! I always love your clothing. I know you typically mention what you’re wearing in most videos. But I would love an updated wardrobe tour so it’s all in one place! I went scouring through all your videos trying to find when you mentioned a specific dress haha 😅
Great video, I've already purchased one item from this gift guide for someone this year and am excited to see what they think. I also have the exact same jacket as Alex and it's so warm! Top tip, head over to the outlet store in Wadebridge just on the tail end of winter and you can get them for much cheaper than they retail at 😉

Omg totally adopting the sloth for my daughter. I tell her that’s her spirit animal all the time. LOL. She’s very hard to shop for (she’s 13) because she never wants anything. Ever. It’s so odd to me for a teenager but I feel blessed she’s not the opposite. 😅 Every year my friend and I create custom agate ornaments through her Etsy shop- her stones and I write the calligraphy - her Etsy shop is “Suspendit” and the ornaments are at the top. I think more people are shopping “small” this year because it’s been our best year in the past five. Great gift ideas! I find the men in my life incredibly difficult to buy for.
