6:05 Pro Tip: To actually start a fire with sparks, you must CATCH the spark otherwise the spark will just bounce and slid off of whatever you're trying to ignite. Also you are holding the ferrous rod too far away so the spark loses duration and intensity while travelling through the cool moist air before being able to ignite the fuel. Generally for paper you want to make it into a dense ball and the stick the ferrous rod either as far inside the bundle you can or just contacting the paper and then start sparking it with swift strokes (haha funny). That's why your shirt worked, because fibrous material like cloth easily catches a spark.
Couldn’t they also scrape the rod for a good bit to build some up and then strike it? I’m sure I came across something like that before.

The deep woods at night is absolutely terrifying. My grandparents live in the woods and walking off there porch after 5 during the winter is like walking into the abyss.

Your eyes also adjust to the darkness quite fast if exposed to it regularly.

I feel like you should collab with a bushcraft youtuber, where you stay maybe like 3 days in the wild, bring tents and sleeping bags, but really just to use it as a learning experience. How to build shelters, make fires even in bad conditions, making a bed, and maybe some food/water tips.
Sounds like a lovely experience. About that pitch blackness it really does hit when you first experience that. I remember when I had my compulsory army service and in the first practice in the woods during winter time it was so dark and we got ordered to not use any lights and had to guard our tent, it was hard to even walk in the woods and also a bit scary just hearing all kinds of sounds and trying to listen that nobody was sneaking on us

Tip for using a ferro rod (that’s what the “flint and steel” seems to actually be): you can grate some of the metal off with the serrated edge of the striker. It’s very flammable and can be super useful for getting your tinder to light. On top of that, you can use any dry tree bark (especially birch, that stuff works wonders), and when putting sticks in, you can “feather” them (drag the knife along them to make little shavings, but try not to actually let the shavings fall off) with a knife to make them catch fire more easily.
A wee trick with the flint and Steele is scrapping the flint a little lightly so a little pile of it lands on your substrate and concentrating the heat in that wee spot when you do give it the ol spark which should give you a tasty wee ember to work with

One of the most valuable survival tips I learned at a summer camp I was a counselor at: If you plan on being in the wilderness, always bring a bag of dryer lint. Easy to acquire, and it's an amazingly quick and inexpensive campfire starter.
With flint and steel/magnesium rod, you can make a small pile of the shavings if you go slow, and light that.
Don't feel bad Charles. I was a Boy Scout growing up and I'm pretty confident in saying NOTHING that I learned from that would help me survive a day in the wild.

I guess you would have to buy those laminated state guides and put old school skills to use, like different knots for ropes. Learning plant taxonomy of edible plants vs non-edible. Identifying what are safe sources of water, which trees safe to burn so no toxic chemicals in smoke, and which wild versions of edible plants exist in the state area. There are always some overpowered information and which people who used to live logged as data, and somebody from future could use it. Ends up some kind of unused skills which are neglected because society.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I use the stuff I learned in Scouts pretty frequently, but I also like backpacking and extended camping trips
Eagle Scout here. I retained a lot of Scout skills involving wilderness survival, so I watched the video in agony as they failed vitally important steps in the fire building. I feel like everyone should go "wilderness survival" camping, as it really gives you an interesting perspective on so many different things. And when I say "wilderness survival" camping, I really mean that people should go camping in the middle of the woods and be at least a little bit uncomfortable in the whole situation. The more uncomfortable you put yourself, the more you evaluate your general living conditions, and have appreciation for all the little things. It also helps engage critical thinking abilities, and resourcefulness (being thrifty), which really helps to stimulate young people's growth as individuals into their adulthood. Please put safety first though. I get Charlie and the team's uneasiness, and I respect that they went camping at all.

I want to see a video where Charlie goes camping with the Charlie clones.
For the flint and steel, you want to put the rod actually on the thing you're trying to catch on fire, and really just push it in, they rub the knife against it down into the material, doesn't even need to be that fast. The material needs to be soft so you can push it in and easy to catch on fire. Best material for this is cotton from a tampon since the cotton there is very compact. Shrubbery and the gills of some dry mushroom work fine too, or paper like seen here.
Your advices are pretty much just common sense and it pains me to see them, multiple people not realizing that

7:00 The best thing is pocket lint or the stuff you clean from your dryer every use. Save it. I promise it will save your life. Using clothing should only be last resort as it could either be better used for something else (Rope, first aid, gathering, insulation for shelter, etc) or as protection for your skin.
