  • What makes a car a future classic? Ingenious or quirky design? Practicality? Reliability? A long production run? If so, the first generation Renault Twingo is a strong contender for being a future classic. Sit down and enjoy my presentation of my newly acquired 1999 Renault Twingo as we try to decide whether this car has the makings of a future collectible.

    It was a small great car. My wife had one since 1996 and 2009 and I miss it a lot. It took us from the south of Italy to Santiago de Compostela and back… Thanks for the review!

    Great review. I really like these cars but they were never sold officially in the UK so are super rare.

    Yesterday I was to see a green one with electric sunroof (the glass version). Big "enough" 4 city comuting.

    Never knew about the button in the engine bay... interesting, hopefully it’s never necessary to use it... Also, you can flip up the entire rear seat so it folds in behind the front seats for even more luggage space, although it severely limits adjustability of the front seats, they won’t go as far back, so taller people might not fit comfortably anymore. Also with folding the front seats back, if you take off the head rest, they fold flat enough that you could lay completely flat, if you’re in a situation you’d need to sleep in the car :)

      Hy, thanks for the input. Regarding the seat, I have discovered the fact that it flips forward a few weeks after I have made the video :) , it was something that was worth putting in my video, but, obviously, i did not know at the time. Regarding the fuel pump kill/reset switch, yes, I hope no one has to use it, ever. But is good to know that it exists and what it does.

    Good review! Do you still have the car?
    Did you know that you can fold the rear seat upright towards the front seats? A bungee cord with a hook connects it to the headrest of the front seat.
    Gives you lots of space in the back with a totally flat floor.
    I agree, definitely a future classic because of design and practicality.

      Hello, thanks for the appreciation. I did not know of that at the moment of the filming, but learned it in time. I sold the car 2 years ago to a friend who has 4 Twingos in total and he still drives this green one around. I sometimes browse the classifieds in my area and look for Twingos ( Mk 1) ... indeed they are great cars.

      Hy, thanks for your comments. It is a great car indeed, with a very special design. To bad about the emission zone in your city (and maybe in others), though... Just out of curiosity, is there an exception for cars registered as vintage/historical?

    Salut! Vreau sa dau si eu de permis, insa am un Renault Kangoo din 2010 de la tatal meu. Mie personal imi plac masinile micute, fiabile, care nu consuma mult, mai ales ca am 18 ani si nu imi permit sa dau mult pe un full. Crezi ca e o masina buna pentru inceput?

      Kangoo-ul, da. Chiar daca e o masina de conceptie mai utilitara, e fiabila, e usor de condus, etc. Eventual, legat de dimensiuni, poti sa-i pui senzori de parcare, daca nu are.

    Hey am vazut masina pe strada si am dat de tine pe yt voiam sa te intreb daca o consideri o masina buna pentru incepatori ?

      Salutare... ai vazut chiar masina mea? :) Daca da, foarte misto. Si da, o consider o masina buna pt un incepator in clasa ei de pret (sub 3500 lei).

    Acuma văd numărul de înmatriculare 🤣. Îs ok dotările la "buburuză". Ai mai mult spațiu la picioare ca la un Renault Modus-fain că poate culisa bancheta.

    Twingo is great. I'm not sure if you can name turning circle tight. It's not that tight ;) But a car is small so it is easy to park everywhere. Do you plan to refurbish it? I like the colour. I have Initiale Paris version from 2001 with 75 hp engine. You can check my videos.

      Hello, - yes, I do plan to refurbish it, as I have started to like it a lot. I am surprised about your comment regarding the turning circle, as I consider it to be tight. It is for example tighter (in relation to the proportion of the cars) than the turning circle of a 2001 Smart Fortwo, which surprised me. But, on the other hand I do not have much experience with newer cars, since I usually tend to prefer older ones :)

      @@isographer turning circle is about 10 metres wide (diameter). But car is short so it is enough.

    Ma tot gândeam sa iau o mașină mica strict de utilizat prin oraș.
    Între un twingo si un fiat seicento ce ai alege?

      Salut, Twingo-ul l-am vandut unui amic, inca merge cu ea. As merge pe Fiat Seicento, ca sa fiu sincer, strict pt. oras. E mai mica si consumul e mai bun. Daca se asteapta si drumuri in afara orasului, atunci Twingo.

      @@gicusv1 Cu placere, mai mentionez ceva legat de Twingo: primele versiuni (pana in '97) aveau un motor pe injectie similar celui de Dacia clasic. Era ok, dar consumul era maricel si performante asa-si-asa. Intre '97 si 2001 s-a folosit un motor cu injectie multipunct cu un raport f bun intre performante si consum. Practic in mintile lui acel motor poate sa consume sub 5 in afara (mers batranseste) si un 7 si ceva in oras. Dupa 2001 s-a introdus o versiune inbunatatita a acestui motor cu 16 Valve, mult mai potent (chiar se simte la demaraj) , dar cu un consum pe masura 7-8 L/100 in afara, si peste 10 in oras. Eu am avut motorul "de mijloc" , cod D7F si am fost f multumit. Motorul cu 16Valve e cod D4F, iar primul... e atat de rar in Romania, incat nici nu merita vorbit de el. Succes.

    am avut si eu , am dat-o aproape moca. Initiale Paris. am dat-o cu 1800 lei, cu un rand de jante din aluminiu misto.
    Astea din 99 au probleme la praguri. daca nu a probleme inca, sa te apuci sa le faci acum ,daca au ceva minor ca sa nu te coste mai mult in viitor.
    Motor 1149 cm3 , consum in bucuresti 10 %
    In afara am mers 2 persoane , cu aer conditionat pornit si cu 150 la ora si toata masina plina de bagajej, pana in Thasos, cu 40 de litri. Cand am ajuns in thasos s-a aprins becu .
    Eu i-am dat bancheta jos ca sa am mai mult spatiu de carat , si este destul .
    La itp ,daca o dai jos sa nu uiti sa o pui la loc pentru itp.
    in curbe la viteza mare nu e stabila , fiind usoara de spate , cam fuge.
    Mi s-a faramat inchiderea centralizata , care este langa oglinda retrovizoare ( un senzor) , m-a costat 400 de lei dezactivarea. si foloseam cheia ca o cheie si atat.
    Probleme nu am avut . nu m-a lasat decat o data , cand a trebuit sa schimb fisele ( ca erau crapate) si am tot amanat sa le schimb pana , iarna lui 2020 cand chiar m-au lasat.
    Nu am vrut varianta asta decapotabila ca se plangea lumea ca la viteza mare scoate un zgomot deranjant.
    Eu am prins cu ea 179 la ora .

      Merci de informatii, intr-adevar, varianta cu plafon textil e zgomotoasa, dar in final orice lucru are avantaje si dezavantaje. Pragurile sunt intr-adevar afectate, sunt pe lista "de facut" - as putea sa le fac eu, ocupandu-ma cu asa ceva, insa timpul ne omoara pe toti :) ... Recent mi-a aparut un martor de "check engine" si caut o diagnoza care sa mearga pe acest model cu motor D7F. Am testat minim 4 diagnoze pana acum si nici una nu citeste. Pe Twingo-ul unui amic merg, el avand motorul ulterior,
      cu 16V.

      @@isographer daca ai ceva probleme la praguri , fa-le . altfel v-a afecat si contrapragurile si iva fi si mai dificil.
