A trailer I made for the movie Freaks directed by Tod Browning. Song used: Creep (Skala and Kolacny Brothers, cover of Radiohead) Trailer made by Wesley Harrison
Y’all, it’s not scary because the “freaks” in the movie are horrifying and scary. It’s scary because of how horrifying the situation is and how real it is
I remember when teacher put this movie in my classroom. I was studying social work. It reflects very well how these people were treated, relegating them to circuses and entertainment. It is the only movie that made me cry. It reflects very well how the "freaks" were separated from society and could only thrive by presenting themselves as freaks
Yeah but during depression and war time pretty much the entire working class had it bad. At least these people had a source of income or guaranteed somewhat decent standard of living by joining the side show.
what is most disturbing is those that would consider this real life situation a 'horror movie'. Is there no empathy in your soul that you can never imagine being born as one of these freaks? I feel very sorry for you if that's the case. I felt empathy through this film as a young child, and I'm so very glad I didl...
Chuck Brogan Empathy and pity walk the same narrow line. I assure you... i know how to read smart ass. I believe you are putting my comprehension in question not my reading skills. Learn how to phrase.
EQOAnostalgia Empathy and pity aren't the same thing, and truly aren't even close. I myself work with the disabled, and we have to be able to understand how they are feeling emotionally and physically so they do not feel abandoned, and so that they feel loved, and we truly do love them. Empathy is the ability to share in someone's feelings about something. Pity is when you feel bad for someone's "misfortunes." Two totally different situations.
This isn't scary, people who were born different arent scary. They probably just have to live life a little differently and find community. But who's to say people who are born able are better than anyone else. We all have feelings and needs at the end of the day.
Religion taught people that people like this were God's curse on you for some sin you committed. It was a shame to have a child who was markedly different so they would be institutionalized to hide them away or end up in freak shows to be gawked at.
Saw this in a movie theater 52 years ago, I wasn't supposed to see they felt it was too , scary? Too psychology damaging? I got sent to the lobby. No one checked, I simply stood near the doorway and watched the whole thing. All these years later I'm still impressed that a man with no arms or legs could pour tobacco from a pouch into a cigarette paper, roll it into a cigarette , light the match, light the cigarette and smoke it All by simply using his mouth. When I've home rolled cigarettes, I have seen him as an inspiration. God bless him.
^Oh please, the writing was so bad that they apologized for getting rid of that one killer clown. Why do you think he made a cameo in the Trumpland season?
Thank you for making this trailer. I finally watched it last night. I've been avoiding it forever because I knew it was going to make me cry, and that it did. It's not a horror movie, it's a Suspense Drama, and I enjoyed it very much. I think it's so sad that this movie and all who worked so hard on it, never reaped the rewards when they were alive. It was ahead of it's time. People found it horrific and were repelled by the deformities on screen, but if they had just remembered that they are humans, Just Like Us...Very sad.
I had my right leg amputated at birth, so I am somewhat different. I love this movie. I do wonder if it would have been called a different name if the critics would have have torn it to shreds
i know this video is 11 years old, but in case the person who made it is reading this, thank you for putting this together! this trailer is excellent :)
I'm totally shocked that the music went with this. I realize that other people might take offense at this "modernization", simply because of the music. But, to me, artistically, it does add something. The intensity built as the clip progressed, which makes you want to watch it. Which is the point of a movie trailer. Great job, I really love it! (I've already seen and love the movie, felt I needed to add my two cents.) Will definitely check out your other trailers!
Nothing wrong with this movie at all. No different to people using dwarfs for lord of the rings and the hobbit or the ch4 series in the u.k called the undatables. Its all about what message a person takes from the movie. If the message is that they now want their own circus of freaks then they probably didn't get the moral of the story. I personally think it's it's cinematic masterpiece when I factor in that it's from the 1930s.
fun fact is that this film was originally 1 hour 30 minutes long - MGM’s executive at that time edited the original cut of the film without the director knowing, the 1h30m version was significantly cut, with additional alternate footage incorporated to help increase the running time. the final abridged cut of the film, released in February 1932, runs for 64 minutes; the original version sadly no longer exists, the film was shown in full at San Diego, without the following cuts from January 28 and had at least had a successful run (whilst the film initially flopped financially and was shunned by most critics, who panned it at that time), that theatre advertised the fact that it was the only place where the movie could be seen in the original version that was “uncensored”
Love how these are actual “freaks” while in this generation it would all just be make up and cgi effects. It must’ve felt great to be in a movie like this to be well remembered by.
This is scary because when they found out one of their own was being used they decided to get revenge collectively. And scenes of them crawling towards you with weapons in their hands is something nightmares are made of. You can’t help but get chilled to the bone. A horror classic!
Beautiful spirits on these people. They've much more human then most of us. Imagine only wanting to be treated like everyone else, most of us have never had to go through that!
Read the book, my grandma owned it, I was 16. took me another 20 years to find and buy the DVD, But I found it, to me it was wonderful to see how people adapt to their circumstances. This movie is my lifesaver, I have physical problems, but nothing as to which these people have, and I watch it regularly, to remind me that, although I have problems, there are many people who have more problems than I do
I hadn't heard of this until today, but I'll be searching it out tonight. Your trailer was beautiful! I've only heard good things & I can't wait to watch.

This movie really gives me a realisation of the beauty of individualism. I really felt like I was one of them. Gobble Gobble we accept you as one of us.
I'm in the same boat as you. Ever since a kid I haven't been scared of horror films. This one doesn't look scary just kind of creepy. Maybe because it is black and white.
It didn’t get banned for being insensitive it was the 1930s people were insensitive to many things. It was banned because people found it disturbing and revolting. They couldn’t imagine these characters as real people and to see them portrayed that way blew there minds. People threw up and ran from the theaters etc. MGM even took there name off it. It wasn’t until near 30 years later that it received attention for a cinematic film that was groundbreaking in its content and casting.
@@badbih1509 It got banned because it was considered too grotesque at the time, audiences back then obviously weren’t really bothered by insensitivity. And this movie isn’t insensitive, it’s not even a horror film.
Sensational. great idea to add this song to the trailer for Freaks. This film is spectacular. For me, what is striking is the humanitarian vision. The idea of equality is now present in all films. In most cases does not mean anything. But Freaks is different. Forgive me algun evetual spelling error. As English is not my language (I'm Brazilian), I may be making mistakes without realizing it.
I remember watching this in English class a year ago. All my mates thought it sucked and was boring, but i loved it. Great trailer and interesting setting.
This film was decades ahead of its time. Although reviled by both film critics and the general public when released in 1932, it portrayed a human side and element to these circus side-show performers not seen or appreciated at that time, eventually resulting in an awakening with regard to people born with severe malformations and disabilities. It is also one of the saddest and scariest films ever made. Many years later its importance was recognized and in 1994 it was selected for film preservation by the National Film Registry, which preserves films it believes to be "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant'.
those kids sound old asl. also this movie is lowkey upsetting to me. the way they say mentally and physically disabled people r freaks nd monsters is insensitive asl. now ik y this was one of the most disturbing old movies .
Which ones were kids? Because the small boy and girl weren't kids at all. Google "The Doll Family" - they were both adults when this movie was shot. Harry, the man, was 30, and Daisy, who played the woman, was 25.
Also, I know it’s upsetting but that’s how the world was. There were freak shows because everyone thought they were freaks. Times have changed but it’s interesting to look back and learn that they were wrong to treat those people like that
Il film insegna di non giudicare una persona dall'aspetto fisico. Per essere un film del 1932, porta ancora temi tuttora presenti nei giorni nostri e che spesso è proprio dietro la "normalità" che si nasconde la vera "mostruosità".
Great trailer. This was a sad brilliant film ahead of its time. The movie was almost universally hated when it came out and think it was even banned in some theaters. The irony at the time was fans disregarding the message and instead simply being afraid of freaks mirroring the exact sentiments of characters. The real freaks were the cold heart normal people that couldn't even tolerate those different from them.
"All the best freaks are here... Stop staring at me" (-Marillion) That scene where they all crawl on on their hands and knees under the circus wagons is the perfect metaphor for the way the disabled were treated in those days. No distinction was drawn between the physically and mentally disabled then, so many of these unfortunates who were of perfectly sound mind ended up in prisons, asylums and horrific institutions. Compared to this, then life in a 'freakshow' must have been a godsend to many. Years later, my good friend Clive Barker updated and recycled this concept in his book and film 'Nightbreed' as an allegory of the way the LGBT+ community were treated in the homophobic 70's and 80's. I think Tod Browning would most certainly approve. A classic piece of cinema the likes of which we will never see again. 5/5
Yes I know I'm a bit slow, but when I was watching this trailer I was like wow they made a great trailer back then. Better than most up to the 1980's. I mean its kinda possible for them to have made this. Anyways, great trailer, its timeless like the movie.
These people are not freaks. They are still human just like you and me. They breathe, talk, even walk. Just because they have special abilities or disorders dosent mean there freaks. There just something special
This is rated G that means it is appropriate for all ages here's all the ratings movies can get G- ok for all ages, even toddlers Pg- not appropriate for all kids, it is recommended that parents see it first before the child, parents decide whether it's appropriate for their child, every parent is different from others, say they wanted to watch "the Grinch" movie the parents say "ok" they can watch it, some parents won't let their child see it because it is not appropriate for the kids to see. PG-13- not appropriate for kids under 13 must be 13 in order to watch R- not appropriate for kids, must be 18 or older in order to see it
Yes! And other seasons too! Delphine LaLaurie and Marie Laveau were real persons (but ofc they weren't immortal). In Hotel James Patrick March was inspired by Henry Howard Holmes, who had own hotel. Henry was serial killer, and killed his victims in his hotel. Roanoke Colony was real.

This is the film Pro Wrestler Raven says he's most scared of.
Really?
Good work! And nice choice of music. :)
Thanks for posting this excellent trailer. Fortunately, Freaks is now considered a piece of great art. Once, it was banned and despised...
So is American Horror Story inspired by this movie? o-o
