Julie honestly was and OG social justice feminist who fought for rights and issues including environmental issues. She's so much more interesting story wise than kira and while maybe having basic looks does provide a good option for young kids and beginner collectors. it feels sad to get rid of the message Julie has in order to have Kira who besides having gay aunts doesn't bring much to the table.
I agree with you! American Girl has drifted from the focus on historical dolls and education to multiple more modern character lines. I don’t like that the GOTY dolls are over-staying their year by YEARS and that Kira is now creeping into the World by Us Line. The “Adopt Don’t Shop” outfit on your Corrine doesn’t belong in Kira’s Australia line. It would do just as well with the Truly Me outfits. Mattel/American Girl would do well to clarify their products and their character lines and go back to a purpose that isn’t “make as much as possible to appeal to all buyers and keep what sells (or what didn’t sell) as long as possible!” Get clear on what American Girl represents to the country, its people, and its history.
Agreed, they're def going through an identity crisis right now, so I hope they can realign and focus more on historical dolls in the future, especially since they have yet to release an Asian historical doll
More reasons that Kira shouldn't be in WBU: She doesn't match with the other 3 dolls since she doesn't have the new face up with painted on lashes, her story doesn't have a social justice focus, and she's stepping into a release that was all dolls of color

I don't have Corrine yet as I'm saving up to purchase Makena, Martiza, and Corrine all together but when their competition (of American Girl) are releasing more diversity in launches, sorry but my money might be going to companies that support diversity right off. Unfortunately, the "doc don't sell" argument is going to continue as long as AG continues to not promote DOC well. Hopefully if Corinne's movie is a success, this will change. There are so many ignorant collectors/parents who have been vocal about being against the new changes AG's made as of late because of their political beliefs. Wish they knew that this has nothing to do with politics when AG was on a harsh decline in the 2010s when all they kept releasing were white characters dolls after another after Kanani until 2017 outside of Melody. Having only white dolls isn't the answer and I just hope AG's using Kira as a "test" to introduce Corinne to WBU in the future. She's a basic doll who would make a great replacement for Julie if she's retiring, but they know they need to be more unique than having dolls like her. If only they would've taken collectors' requests for diversity seriously in the 2010s and were more balanced because it sure would've avoided some of the troubles they've been having as of late... Another weird trend I’ve been noticing with doc is AG seems to believe they won’t sell by themselves so they will give them rainbow hair to boost sales. I’m thinking of Luciana’s purple streak, Corinne’s blue hair, and even the one Nutcracker doll with darker skin got purple hair.

Everyone keeps on saying Kira is Julie 2.0 but they are forgetting that Julie is Elizabeth with brown eyes. So Kira is truly Elizabeth 3.0. At least Kira had the decency to come out more than a decade later while Julie on the other hand came out two years later!

They had 2 winter princess dolls and 4 sparkling ballerinas. They are reluctant to take a chance on just one DOC. Call it business savvy if you like, but I think We will never know unless they have the courage to try. Addy Walker didn’t need a companion doll. Cecile and Marie Grace? Chrissa, Gwen, and Sonali? They abandoned the og point of what pleasant Rowland wanted. They should have just keep adding historicals, laid off the 100s of truly mes/customs, and promoted the GOTY. I feel like they’ve had enough historicals to keep the company fresh, and with GOTY thrown in they’d always have something new to release each year.
i 100% agree but i think they’ll hold back on retiring julie for a bit since all the moms love her, i got her as a kid twelve years ago simply because my mom was raised in the 70s and her hair was straight and easy to care for. same reason they released maryellen & courtney- appealing to moms and grandmas. julies story is also so important with divorce & sexism. but yeah kira doesn’t deserve to be in world by us, corinne would be such a better fit.
The Rescuers Down Under was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I really wished I could have been Cody, the main character, so when Kira came out, I was really excited. I am older and not the demographic the doll was aimed for, but Ive always had a soft spot for Australian wildlife. I enjoy her character and story for that reason.
I also do rescue work and bought the Wildlife Rescue set. I loved Kira's Comfy outfit so I bought it. I have three Julie dolls, two are customs. Julie is the only blonde doll that I have. I love Josefina and Jess face molds and have multiple dolls of each.
Yes!!! I was confused when Kira's new outfit dropped this year. Thinking maybe it was a mistake or got stuck on a boat with the supply chain issues, but when I got the box and it said AG 2022 I knew it was planned that way. That outfit could have easily just been a TM line outfit to go with the pet center. I'm not liking her being pushed into to the WBU line. I have a feeling they are pushing her in because "her" diversity is the gay aunts, but personally that's not her struggle like the other 3 girls. I would have rather seen them retire her. Then if they wanted a white WBU doll make her part of the the LBGTQ+ community herself. That being said we have all the GOTY dolls from 2009 to present, except the two friends. I have McKena, my daughter wants Martiza and I want Evette for Christmas. She's 10 and was listening to you video yelling "Why can't we have more POC dolls?!" As for the pet push. I have a feeling they are trying to ride the coattails of the Squishmallow crease currently, Beanie Babies of the 2020's.
Hello Kris, thank you for sharing your thoughts about Kira & Corrine. I agree with the points you have brought up. When I saw Kira staying in WBU, I couldn't put my finger on why that decision by AG seemed... different. I want to also state that I didn't start collecting AG dolls until I think winter 2019 or January/February 2020, so there's a lot of AG things that I'm not familiar with. Anyway, I also want to add that I am not ok with AG using Josefina's face mold for Julie & Kira. I know AG has done that with Kaya and the White boy doll, so it comes off as lazy and not well thought out for BIPOC collectors. Also, I did buy Corrine from the Chicago AG store and she's my first NIB AG doll ever! I love her! I also have thoughts about Corrine's story, but I would like AG to pay me for my opinion if they wanted to use that feedback for creativity.
I personally don't so much mind the GOTY dolls being out for longer than a year, that way if I don't like the current GOTY I can buy one of the recent previous ones instead (looking from a child customer's pov, as well as an adult pov). ie. I didn't like Kira, so I was glad Joss was still around during Kira's year, but at the same time I wouldn't want them giving Joss new merchandise during Kira's time in the spotlight, like they're doing now with Kira when it's Corinne's time to shine. I also completely agree that Kira doesn't belong in World by Us. Not just because she's isn't a doll of color, but because the stories in that line discuss making a difference in the world and celebrating diversity. There's nothing diverse or unique about Kira. Sure, she has lesbian aunts in her story, but they don't live with her they live all the way in Australia. Joss struggles with a disability and has a hearing aid. Corinne deals with racism during her story. What's Kira's biggest struggle? Fighting with her cousin over raising a baby koala? Loving animals? Also, as was said in this video, there just isn't anything special or unique to Kira. She looks like Julie (who's still available) and Blaire's (who was available at the time of Kira's release I think) love child. They took Julie's wig, gave it a slight curl, took Blaire's dark green murky eyes that might as well be brown anyways, kept the Josefina mold and put her together. She's the most generic GOTY, imo. She doesn't have a unique wig, unique eye color, unique face mold, unique freckle pattern, nothing.
I agree that the GOTY should only be around for that year. As a collector it makes no sense to keep them around longer than the year if they are stated as Girl Of The Year.
We have Kira & Corrine, they are both beautiful dolls. I love the Australian theme & collection for Kira. The color pallet & winter chalet for Corrine is also adorable. I really like that the doll of the year is available for an extended time. This gives you more time to collect & buy the items.
I would love if Corinne was added to WBU! She is my favorite doll American Girl Has release. Huh, I didn't know she was made a part of the WBU line, and it doesn't really make sense at all (though I guess her being a vet sorta fits into it?). At least knowing they have Kavi as the GOTY and will hopefully be releasing more historicals this year starting with the twins means they might be trying to be more diverse/ more historical doll focused.
Okay so I agree girl of the year should be girl of the year. I hate that as well. as for gabby I don’t think it matters the fact she’s African American, just the fact she had no thought regardless of race. Kira and Julie look similar but they are different enough to me, but they could have been more creative with Kira. I like Kira better personally because her hair has more style and she has feathered brows. I really don’t think they should add her to the world of color or any girl of the year. But I see how she would be a better fit. As for Corrine, she’s fine. I like the face mold,I feel that the colored hair is cheep and still not on board with painted lashes, and that’s why I didn’t get her.

Little late to the thread but I'm currently annoyed that she is the GOTY from LAST YEAR and has two pages in the new catalog....the same space Claudie got. TWO PAGES. Claudie could have at least gotten 4 pages. Kira doesn't need to be in the catalog anymore.

Actually she reminds me more of lea as you said they keep on reusing dolls accessories and the actual dolls which sorta sucks and honestly I didn't know how feel about the new dolls I think they're the ones you've been saying and actually absolutely love them now and I feel like lea's story and kira's are kinda similar which made me disappointed about the doll and the 2022 doll I was at first disappointed because how I saw 2021 and I was expecting the same thing but actually I really do enjoy the 2022 doll!

Personally I think Corinne is way prettier than Keira because Keira looks a lot like Julie and why do we need to Julie’s even if they tired Julie. i 100% agree but i think they’ll hold back on retiring julie for a bit since all the moms love her, i got her as a kid twelve years ago simply because my mom was raised in the 70s and her hair was straight and easy to care for. same reason they released maryellen & courtney- appealing to moms and grandmas. julies story is also so important with divorce & sexism. but yeah kira doesn’t deserve to be in world by us, corinne would be such a better fit.
The Rescuers Down Under was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I really wished I could have been Cody, the main character, so when Kira came out, I was really excited. I am older and not the demographic the doll was aimed for, but Ive always had a soft spot for Australian wildlife. I enjoy her character and story for that reason.
I also do rescue work and bought the Wildlife Rescue set. I loved Kira's Comfy outfit so I bought it. I have three Julie dolls, two are customs. Julie is the only blonde doll that I have. I love Josefina and Jess face molds and have multiple dolls of each.

Yes!!! I was confused when Kira's new outfit dropped this year. Thinking maybe it was a mistake or got stuck on a boat with the supply chain issues, but when I got the box and it said AG 2022 I knew it was planned that way. That outfit could have easily just been a TM line outfit to go with the pet center. I'm not liking her being pushed into to the WBU line. I have a feeling they are pushing her in because "her" diversity is the gay aunts, but personally that's not her struggle like the other 3 girls. I would have rather seen them retire her. Then if they wanted a white WBU doll make her part of the the LBGTQ+ community herself. That being said we have all the GOTY dolls from 2009 to present, except the two friends. I have McKena, my daughter wants Martiza and I want Evette for Christmas. She's 10 and was listening to you video yelling "Why can't we have more POC dolls?!"
As for the pet push. I have a feeling they are trying to ride the coattails of the Squishmallow crease currently, Beanie Babies of the 2020's.
Hello Kris, thank you for sharing your thoughts about Kira & Corrine. I agree with the points you have brought up. When I saw Kira staying in WBU, I couldn't put my finger on why that decision by AG seemed... different. I want to also state that I didn't start collecting AG dolls until I think winter 2019 or January/February 2020, so there's a lot of AG things that I'm not familiar with. Anyway, I also want to add that I am not ok with AG using Josefina's face mold for Julie & Kira. I know AG has done that with Kaya and the White boy doll, so it comes off as lazy and not well thought out for BIPOC collectors. Also, I did buy Corrine from the Chicago AG store and she's my first NIB AG doll ever! I love her! I also have thoughts about Corrine's story, but I would like AG to pay me for my opinion if they wanted to use that feedback for creativity.

I personally don't so much mind the GOTY dolls being out for longer than a year, that way if I don't like the current GOTY I can buy one of the recent previous ones instead (looking from a child customer's pov, as well as an adult pov). ie. I didn't like Kira, so I was glad Joss was still around during Kira's year, but at the same time I wouldn't want them giving Joss new merchandise during Kira's time in the spotlight, like they're doing now with Kira when it's Corinne's time to shine.
I also completely agree that Kira doesn't belong in World by Us. Not just because she's isn't a doll of color, but because the stories in that line discuss making a difference in the world and celebrating diversity. There's nothing diverse or unique about Kira. Sure, she has lesbian aunts in her story, but they don't live with her they live all the way in Australia. Joss struggles with a disability and has a hearing aid. Corinne deals with racism during her story. What's Kira's biggest struggle? Fighting with her cousin over raising a baby koala? Loving animals?
Also, as was said in this video, there just isn't anything special or unique to Kira. She looks like Julie (who's still available) and Blaire's (who was available at the time of Kira's release I think) love child. They took Julie's wig, gave it a slight curl, took Blaire's dark green murky eyes that might as well be brown anyways, kept the Josefina mold and put her together. She's the most generic GOTY, imo. She doesn't have a unique wig, unique eye color, unique face mold, unique freckle pattern, nothing.

I agree that the GOTY should only be around for that year. As a collector it makes no sense to keep them around longer than the year if they are stated as Girl Of The Year.
We have Kira & Corrine, they are both beautiful dolls. I love the Australian theme & collection for Kira. The color pallet & winter chalet for Corrine is also adorable. I really like that the doll of the year is available for an extended time. This gives you more time to collect & buy the items.
I would love if Corinne was added to WBU! She is my favorite doll American Girl Has release. I do however want a doll that’s adopted it’s sounds like a boring story but I’m adopted and I think it could do well. I’m Chinese so I was hoping Corinne’s brother would have be adopted. Huh, I didn't know she was made a part of the WBU line, and it doesn't really make sense at all (though I guess her being a vet sorta fits into it?). At least knowing they have Kavi as the GOTY and will hopefully be releasing more historicals this year starting with the twins means they might be trying to be more diverse/ more historical doll focused.

Okay so I agree girl of the year should be girl of the year. I hate that as well. as for gabby I don’t think it matters the fact she’s African American, just the fact she had no thought regardless of race. Kira and Julie look similar but they are different enough to me, but they could have been more creative with Kira. I like Kira better personally because her hair has more style and she has feathered brows. I really don’t think they should add her to the world of color or any girl of the year. But I see how she would be a better fit. As for Corrine, she’s fine. I like the face mold,I feel that the colored hair is cheep and still not on board with painted lashes, and that’s why I didn’t get her.

Little late to the thread but I'm currently annoyed that she is the GOTY from LAST YEAR and has two pages in the new catalog....the same space Claudie got. TWO PAGES. Claudie could have at least gotten 4 pages. Kira doesn't need to be in the catalog anymore.

Actually she reminds me more of lea as you said they keep on reusing dolls accessories and the actual dolls which sorta sucks and honestly I didn't know how feel about the new dolls I think they're the ones you've been saying and actually absolutely love them now and I feel like lea's story and kira's are kinda similar which made me disappointed about the doll and the 2022 doll I was at first disappointed because how I saw 2021 and I was expecting the same thing but actually I really do enjoy the 2022 doll!

I think Corinne is a beautiful doll but I don’t want to get her because I do not like the blue hair and I heard many others don’t either. My daughter has Kira and the one reason she absolutely loves her is because of the tv show “Izzys Koala World” which is even featured in Kira’s Book (We didn’t know this when we got her) I personally don’t like the modern Julie because of her weird costumey outfit. The old Julie was so cute.

Personally I think Corinne is way prettier than Keira because Keira looks a lot like Julie and why do we need to Julie’s even if they tired Julie. And I think Karen would fit and with the world by us way better than Keira, when they first created the world by us lime they made it as a diverse line so I didn’t care I just seems stupid and ignorant. But I understand there are a lot of people who like Keira over Julie, To those people I’m glad you can like a doll that I don’t personally like.
