I was at this game and it was alot of fun! Elvis Grbac was an excellent quarterback and Desmond Howard was his friend from High School and favorite target. It was the opening game of the season and the field had been dropped by 3 feet and prescription astroturf replaced the old astroturf. Gary Moeller and Lou Holtz were two fantastic coaches too!
If this game were held today it'd take 15 minutes for the officials to watch the replay of Desmond's catch from 37 different angles, call the head of officiating, the announcers to watch the same 37 angle replay and say "oooohhh Brent, I dunno..." before finally being ruled a catch - OR they'd get it wrong.
That’s a good point. Although sometimes I do wonder: how many big (high stakes) games throughout college football history that took place before replay actually got it wrong-and replay would have changed the result? Yeah, it’s extremely annoying to wait, and inexplicably, they still do get it wrong *after* replay from time to time. But on the whole, I think it’s a good thing.
As a young Michigan fan in a house full of Michigan graduates the Wolverines had the upper hand on Michigan state and ohio state when I was a kid. I actually developed a distaste for Notre Dame first because they always gave Michigan trouble. The 1989 loss to nd with Rocket running back the two kickoffs in the rain was my first vivid football memory. This game was SWEET REVENGE and I cried for joy when Desmond made that diving touchdown catch to seal the victory. It's funny we say seal the victory with 9 minutes to go and just a 10 point lead, but in those days that was how we saw it. Though we knew there was still time we could just feel that this Michigan was going to finish the job strong. This is a good rivalry and I miss it. GO BLUE!!
@@stevekov6740 that's interesting, because the 1989 Michigan Notre Dame game was one of my first football memories, also. I was so happy to see this win after the two previous defeats, even after Jon Vaughn's rushing effort in the 1990 game. Thanks for sharing this story.
@capitanfuturo594....it's Charles woodson. I'd take Carter or Edwards over Desmond. That's not counting offensive lineman like Tom Mack, Dan dierdorf, Jake long ect.
