John Beaudin has been in major market radio (Edmonton, Vancouver & Calgary) for 35 years and a music journalist since 1989. He graduated from Broadcasting school as a newsman so he would have the skills to write about the artists that inspired him since he bought his first Elton John album as a teen. In the '80s Beaudin was the host of the syndicated radio show “The Cross Canada Report” which had two versions (Rock and A/C). Beaudin was also asked to be a judge at the Juno Awards (Canada's answer to the Grammys) Twice. He has anchored every position in radio including morning and afternoon drive and was a Program and Music Director for The Breeze and California 103 in Calgary. He currently hosts the popular Lovesongs at QM-FM in Vancouver and on iHeartRadio.

Fab interview, John ! So good to hear Mike and Roger Fisher's perspective on Heart. That original six-member line-up was the best of all on those first four albums !
I agree. Those first 4 albums were fantastic classic Heart. Bebe Le Strange is also very good. I do like their later stuff from Jupiter’s Darling forward.
Rodger and Mike and the Wilson sisters put together one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Cheers James.

Growing up in Washington and having the music bug , Heart was the Holy Grail!! Alot of us worshipped them( as Heart and The Love Mongers). Even years later when Queenwriecht and grunge got popular our main rock station in Seattle "KISW" never let us forget who helped form our identity and expression of what it meant to be Northwest rockers. I have carried that honor my whole life and it makes me a stand out among my peers here in Arizona and I get to relive those feelings when I watch those sisters in a more mature form play live on CZcams videos I have downloaded on my phone. I personally owe them alot just for that. The world today isn't the same place anymore .I'm still me in this old body and those Wilson sisters are still Heart and that's something that nobody can take.
I saw Heart many times, love them! Ann Wilson is the best female rock singer on earth. Her voice is so beautiful it gave me goosebumps. Great interview!

Lucky to see the band many times in 1973 when they were "Silver Heart" playing the west coast club circuit, best club band ever. Roger had a Marshall stack/Les Paul cranked and their Led Zeppelin full set with Ann channeling Robert Plant was as good as the original.
Complete jealousy here! I can only imagine how great it was to have seen Heart early on. I did get to see them up close in August '77 and that was awesome.
I remember when their first album came out my friends and I were blown away. We were all wondering who the hell this great guitarists was. Well, we all know the rest of the story.

The insights of a band I’ve followed since Bob in Wheeling College in West Virginia introduced us to them in 1975!!
Love this story by the Fischer brothers. I have read the book the Ann and Nancy wrote together I think. It all fits together. It was magic for sure.
Living in the Seattle area, I have met and gotten to know so many people who either knew the Wilson sisters or worked on the farm that they had or one of them had... And many of the former members play in bands around here and/or play at the open mics...
Michael Derosier and Steve Fossen have a band called Heart by Heart with a fantastic singer Somar Macek ( who is married to Steve now). They play around the PNW. So it’s all good there. Roger’s new band is amazing ! Rog has a great solo voice. They are on Facebook so check them out !

Seen Heart in Albq in 1980 or so in Albq NM. We had crap seats practically behing the stage but there drinks were right underneath our seats 10 ft away. They visited with us 3 or 4 times and would come over and play by us. Pretty dam cool!!!
I knew just about all of these details but I love hearing it straight from them.

They really hustled on both sides of the border, Canada/Washington/Oregon. Typical story of a band working its way up.
In "those days" if you were young and wanted to get drunk and have fun/party, you'd often go out into the woods (Washington state probably has a secluded wooded area for anyone that wants one :)) to a 'keggar.' You chip in for the mutual price of beer. Basically drink until you fall down or realize you have school the next day.
I wasn't at this particular keggar, but of all things my Boeing friend 'Steve,' told me that he'd been at a keggar in the woods a few years before (all the woods in Western WA look similar what with Douglas Firs) I think in this case the Woods near "Federal Way..." low and behold the musical entertainment was Heart. So not only did they play clubs and a pizza restaurant in Bellevue but parties in the woods! (Undoubtedly that keggar event had a high fee to pay for the beer AND band.)

Steve's a Fantasic Player. He Self taught plays with His Soul. Be Nice if Time would Heal all Wounds. In Time Magazine Said they Just Drank Red Wine. Sure Sure. I Donated my Stuff one Time. I Roadie one Gig got Fired by Peter Haycock. Dick!!!
After their departure that new version of heartfelt ever produce any really great chord progressions or riffs..the truly low point came in the mid-80s when the record company did not even trust and Aunt Nancy to write material anymore and pushed other songwriters on them.
@Howard Bueker they are both really just pop fluff compared to the earlier material I don't care that it's sold well.

Somehow I'm glad they did power ballads. They grew a lot of audience with their hits during 80s.
By the time Dog & Butterfly came out they had lost it, they never broke any new ground again just Kept churning out the top 40 throwaway crap. Aaah but those first few records master pieces each one.

I respectfully disagree. Bebe LeStrange (which followed Dog & Butterfly) had some great songs on it. I wouldn't call it "Top 40 throwaway crap" at all. Private Audition had a few good ones on it as well, although the decline was beginning. I was not a fan of the big hair/MTV period which they themselves even referred to as "an illusion" in their episode of Behind the Music (VH1). But they were going to be dropped by their record company if they didn't play ball, so they capitulated. I'd have preferred they tell their record company to go take a flying leap, and then sign with an independent label instead of doing the corporate schlock they ended up doing, but they didn't.
Basically the band was never the same after the Fishers left...
Best Heart album are from the 80's...it would be time to play them ALL!!!!
I prefer the first four albums from the '70's. By the '80's Roger was out, the music changed and it could be any band from the '80's. Just another MTV band. The first albums are timeless. The later ones sound dated to me.
But that's just me I suppose.
Heart was over when Roger left . The sound was gone; the writing partners were gone. The Wilsons had to turn to Capitol Records to give them songs, and made those ghastly 'big hair' videos for MTV . Talk about losing your soul .

Granted it was a different band behind Ann & Nancy and less organic it was a pretty kickass period. A resurgence.
The songs suited them well and it totally transferred to the stage. GREAT live shows from that period.
Well they already sounded ancient in early 80s by keep making 70s music. Their takes on 80s with Passionworks didn't end up well with sales.
@Robert Anthony I agree. The band wasn't quite over, but it was different. Roger messed up the whole dynamic of the band and the relationships between both couples. When one couple broke up, it of course affected the other couple and made things awkward, because there were two sets of siblings involved. Shortly after Nancy and Roger broke up, Ann and Michael broke up.
Disagree. The songs Roger wrote were written with Ann and Nancy. Of their early music, most of the hits were written by Ann, Nancy, and Sue. Without the Wilson sisters, Ann in particular, Roger would have ended up being a Christmas tree farmer in Seattle!
That couldn’t to be farther from the truth, the Fishers were nowhere to be found during Hearts peak years, in the MTV era, when they finally made REAL money. Sorry, just the facts!
Roger is disgusting. What most people know about the incident that got him kicked out of the band is just the surface. He truly deserved to be kicked out. Sickening
It’s kind of tough when you wind up being kicked out of your own band. They should have called the band Fisher’s Heart at the outset instead of it turning into the Anne Show + Nancy. The band certainly lacked the vision and cohesion it had in the 70’s when they lost its original founders.
Without detracting from the talent and work of others. The truth is that "Fisher's Heart" would probably still be playing in clubs. Remember that the label only wanted to sign Ann, and then Ann and Nancy. They didn't want the rest. They asked the girls if they would go alone or with the band, and they chose the band. They could have gone alone and left them on the road, as has happened with others. That was a defining moment, where they could become "The Wilsons", but Ann was involved with Mike Fisher, so... Also, "Fisher's Heart" would only play covers. The Connies: Ann, Nancy and their childhood friend Sue Ennis, were the songwriters.

Great records don’t mean they aren’t a couple of burnouts that, if there was any real strong talent, there would have been a career post Heart. But, there wasn’t.

@Todd You calling Roger Fisher a burnout is reprehensible. Just because he doesn't continue to play arenas doesn't mean he's a burnout. He was part of a band called Alias for three years that did achieve some success. He still plays today-as fine as he always has. One of the most underrated guitarist living today.
@@DCB728 By his own admission, he didn't play a single note on the Alias album and hated being part of that band and got himself kicked out of it too
You know deep down inside that the pop music which Heart wrote and performed for years after the departure of the Fisher brothers couldn’t have been fulfilling for the Wilson sisters, especially Nancy.
And that's why they went acoustic in 90s albums.
