I think the issue here is that he was so much more, so much better than results and records actually give him credit for. He is, and will probably be for generations to come, the best skater to ever grace the ice. Absolute technical perfection, incredible artistry, he never cut corners when it came to the quality of his performances. No matter how injured or sick, and he's been injured or sick for most of his career, he always gave his best. He was mistreated by judges, mistreated by other skater's fans, received lower scores than he deserved, yet he kept competing till he deemed it unnecessary, till he was satisfied.
He is what every other skater should aspire to be, and he made history each time he went on the ice. He is the definition of greatest of all time. Words can't really explain how much better than everybody else in his field he was, and still is, even now that he's an extremely successful Pro athlete.
Watching him compete is an absolute pleasure and people should be thankful they're alive to witness his greatness.

Best comment. No score or medal can do justice to his greatness. He’s bigger than the sport. If FS judging was fair, if the bunch of elite skaters have 9s in PCS, Hanyu should have 15s. Same for jumps as his techniques are always way above the rest of the field.

@@yunnn2654 it’s truly upsetting to see. Such a talent deserved to be praised, not hindered with. I will never forget them for doing that to him.

For a genuine fan of figure skating, the performance should be combined with both technic & artistry.
It should not just jump like a mudskipper.
Or else the music means nothing at all.
And Yuzuru Hanyu is the only skater who can bring the crowds' soul into the music.
That's his talent based on extraordinary skating skill.

I would argue that there is also other skaters who can make the music alive, especially in the women's disclipine (Evgenia Medvedeva, Kamila Valieva, both absolutely magical performers). But Hanyu is the best male skater in that area by a mile and most complete backage in terms of longevity, technique and results among any disclipines. He truly mastered his craft.

But Yuzuru's performance can deeply touch crowds' soul, because he truly perform with his whole spirit and soul.
It makes the difference. And that's why he can get so much fans' love all over the world even he failed in Peking Olympic Game.

Yuzuru Hanyu is a legend in the sport, but he transcends it too. He is a superstar and one of, if not the most, popular athelete in Japan. His accomplishments (2 Olympic, 2 worlds, 4 gpf, 1 4CC, numerous nationals golds, 19 world records) are impressive beyond belief, but his talent truly lies beyond that. Hanyu competed for three olympic cycles and competed at the highest level since 2012 which is remarkable for sport that can be so damaging to your body. Hanyu overcame so many injuries like his recurring right ankle (the landing ankle) injury that nearly benched him from 2018 Pyeongchang and the gruesome collision at 2014 Cup of China that no one would've blamed him if he decided to hang up his skates. He constantly strove for improvement with trying different quads, but also maximizing his points in his spins and choreographic elements. He has such a mental fortitude that he can rearrange his layout mid-performance to account for earlier mistakes. He also is a great sport and was friendly with many of his rivals (Javi, Nathan, Shoma, etc) even when he received a lot of hate (especially in his early career). He overcame other significant challenges such as the 2011 earthquake and tsumani in Japan that devestated his hometown and destroyed his ice rink while he was still in it. He then participated in ice shows to both raise money for disaster relief as well as have ice to train on so he could still compete in competitions. He donated the prize money from both of his Olympic victories to earthquake relief. He participated fully in every aspect of skating, from cutting his own music, being very involved in the choreography, coming up with his own program ideas, and even coaching himself during the pandemic when he could not return to Canada. I think the most amazing thing about Hanyu was that he loved the sport like no other. Even after he won all the major competitions available and won 2 olympic golds (in a sport where you can only get one individual medal at the Olympics), he continued to skate and push the sport when many others would've retired once they hit their peak. He is definitely one of the reasons more and more people are getting into skating because he is a legend. Long rant but I really love the legacy Hanyu brings to the sport.

Most complete? Really? He had a habit of dropping his arms and choreo leading into jumps. He also barely won in Sochi as both he and Chan fell. Chan was off his usual form. He also struck luck again in South Korea as Nathan had beaten him recently and actually won the free skate by far at those games. Had Nathan even skated a mediocre SP, he would have won. So Hanyu won both his golds with the help of others failures not just because he outskated all others.
Hanyu could never even defend his world title. Nathan won three straight over four years (one year was canceled for Covid) including two of them head to head against Hanyu.
It was clear that Nathan in his prime versus Hanyu in his prime likely would have been Nathan’s. Hanyu lacked some of the technical content Nathan had acquired and Nathan had started out scoring Hanyu in PCS as well.
Hanyu is one of the greatest but is not alone as the singular greatest. He rarely won by simply outskating other skaters at their best but rather skating very well while others struggled even slightly. Nathan proved in 2019 Worlds when both he and Hanyu skated near flawless programs that he could win by outskating others who were also at their best.
Nathan is one of the goats as is Hanyu. But neither can be called the goat alone. Each achieved things the other couldn’t or didn’t and each had unique positions in the sport.

@@911randompsp um hokay picadilly. When you get your lips off Hanyu’s asshole and come up for air you might wanna check your facts. Nathan did not end his career nor due to hip injury. He said before Beijing that he would focus on finishing his last two years of University after 2022 before deciding if he would compete again. But nice try with the lies there.
Second Nathan dominated Hanyu in their head to heads. He went undefeated 3.5 years. A streak Hanyu never even came close to. Also Nathan is a THREE TIME CONSECUTIVE WORLD CHAMPION as well as a six time CONSECUTIVE national champion. He also won three GPF himself. Hanyu couldn’t even win two world titles in a row and did not win his national titles all consecutively either. And Hanyu’s ice shows are meaningless in this discussion. Nathan isn’t doing ice shows like that so you’re comparing apples to nothing to try to cement your argument.
Nathan is recognized as the quad king who pushed the boundaries of the sport forward. He is the first to land five types of quad jumps in a program and the first to land six quads in a program and the first to land eight quads across a competition. He is the current world record holder in both short and long programs and overall scores and broke multiple world records himself along the way. He was the youngest world champion since Plushenko in 2001. The youngest to medal at the GPF since Plushenko in 1999. Youngest Four Continents Champion in history until this years event. Set the record for the largest margins of victory at the world championships at nearly 50 points. First to win eight Grand Prix events in a row since 2001. First skater to land the quad lutz-triple toe combo in the back half of the short program.
Nathan was proven to be more consistent competition to competition year over year than Hanyu who would struggle off and on but come up big at some big competitions but could not defend at the worlds even once.
Also Nathan has more Olympic medals than Hanyu. Nathan has THREE Olympic medals to Hanyu’s two. Hanyu never participated in the team events while Nathan did which takes more energy and stamina to basically compete twice at the Olympics.

@@911randompsp In the end, your ‘goat’ couldn’t even jump a salchow in his short program and was a dumbass trying a jump (quad axel) he had never come close to landing even in practice. Also talk about over scoring, his ass fell two or three times in that Beijing FS and was still over awarded on his PCS to finish fourth when he should have dropped like a dead weight. They were far too generous to place him ahead of Cha of SK who was far cleaner. But they wanted to prop him up because of his two lucky gold medal wins.
Suck your goats jizz to your hearts content. He’s old and his time is done. Go watch his ice shows and fantasize about days gone past. Doesn’t change reality. You cannot call Hanyu a goat without discussing Nathan and his impact on the sport and his achievements and how he dominated the 2018-2022 cycle and head to head over Hanyu. That’s reality, not your alternate reality multiverse wannabe world. Dream on picadilly.

I am not a devoted fan of the sport, but it seems like there's a crisis. Or two, actually. The first blatant issue are the judges. I don't think there is a single figure skater or fan who is happy with how points are awarded in the current system. Second, figure skating is simultaneous dancing and acrobatics. Those elements are not necessarily in conflict, but because of the points system, skaters are driven to focus on the jumps so much that it comes at the expense of the flow of the performance. And everybody is talking about this! At this point, they might as well change the SP-FS system into one where the skaters have a jumping routine without music and a separate dancing routine :p

And that start me keeping up male figure skating and it was so much fun. I thought when Hanyu retired I would still watch male figure skating was so much fun to watch but over the years I watched the sport change drastically. I couldn’t wait to see the newer skater to see what personality and charm they bought but that didn’t happen. When the change the scoring system changed to favor more the jumps, it ruined the sport. All I was watching was the young man jumping the whole time and there’s was no skating, no artistry, no charisma, no personality, no fun. It was boring and frustrating to watch. It didn’t feel like ice skating, it became ice jumping. I have lost all interest in male figure skating after Hanyu retire because he was the only reason I was watch the last year or 2. It’s horrible what happened to male figure skating and whoever decide to change the scoring system are absolutely idiots and should be fire and remove from the panel permanently.

    • @samchau3476
      @samchau3476 Před rokem +8

Yuzuru was actually pretty well-loved and his skating had quite a following even before 2012. Even when he was winning everything in juniors, fs fans and media noted that he was a prodigy and predicted that Yuzu will become the face of the sport back then. He was the complete package who only got better later on in order to beat Patrick for the ogm in Sochi. The reason he was treated poorly at japanese nationals 2012 was because he beat the federation's heavy favorite daisuke and it was a fair win. It wasn't due to his performance which was quite solid. His own countrymen (Daisuke's notorious fans) booed a 17 year old, the officials were mad and it was so bad that the booing was removed from the official footage and you can't find it anymore. Brian also mentioned it btw in an interview. Jsf's main head back then who is still very influential- Hashimoto (who had an obsession with daisuke) was also relentless in her mistreatment of Yuzu and tried to downplay his achievements whenever she could. Dai's fans and Hashimoto even kept disturbing Yuzu at the Sochi Olympics but it didn't work. Sorry for being long-winded but I thought about adding some context to what happened at jnats12 and the peculiarity of his federation. Regional politics go a long way in japanese fs. As a Sendai skater (which is not one of the powerhouses of japanese fs) without being signed to any agency, Yuzu always maintained his independence which was not well received by the old faction of japanese fs fans. Despite being a legend now, he has always been somewhat of an outsider and wasn't ever the favorite of his fed who didn't help with his training at tcc. They can't take credit for his accomplishments and that old faction who heavily support both mao and dai had harassed him and his family continuously throughout his career and as a matter of fact, they still do so even today. Thankfully Yuzu has so much support from all over the world and his skating is universally loved, those haters are a minority now and out of sight most of the time.

czcams.com/video/vJ27mUj2UyY/video.html This is a video that was presented about a year ago. Ilia Kalinin has proven a better jumper since then and did not double foot or land awkwardly as Hanyu did twice in the 2018 Olympics or fall twice as Hanyu did in 2022. Even in 2012 you can see above how Hanyu's landings could be awkward. (5:20.)
Ilia not only showed perfect, seemingly effortless quadruple and triple jumps and combination jumps at The World Championships in Montreal, he also executed great spins and at one point even raised his leg up almost vertically which is rarely done by a male skater. After his exhausting program of amazing GRACEFUL jumps and touchdowns to the ice, amazingly he even performed an energetic finale with additional gravity defying leaps and flawless landings.
His every movement and gesture, even down to the pointing of his fingertips was synchronized with the hauntinlgy beautiful music. Hanyu endured the test of time with longevity but even if Kalinin never skated again, his performance in Montreal would go down as the greatest single performance of all time - at least until now.

How good was he actually? He was great, but not as great as it seems at first sight. Never managed to go back to back at worlds. The titles he did win had tiny margins over the 2nd place athletes, compared with runaway victories that Nathan Chen had over Hanyu (and others) in his wins. Yes, he broke many WRs, but what is a world record worth if it's so easy to break? I'd rather have one unbreakable record that lasts for years than multiple ones that get broken literally 5 minutes later. Hanyu had two lucky wins at the Olympics and that completely distorts the whole picture of him being a great, but VERY inconsistent skater. Nathan's arrival to the senior stage in 2016 brutally exposed everything that Hanyu was lacking. And on top of that, his artistry is very overrated. As a former dancer, sometimes it's painful to watch his limp arms and unpointed toes. His lack of dance background is glaring.

Weird that you characterize the Sochi performance as a masterpiece when he messed up 3 of his jumps. 2014 free skate was a disaster and this feels like misleading revisionism.

While so many fans praising/admiring/celebrating GOAT's wonderful (on going) skating career... only very sad individuals try to diminish him with (unnecessary) negative comments... Good to see 98% positive comments though... Fly Yuzu !!

I hate negative comments, it spoils the mood, this is a tribute video, with a clear GOAT's thumbnail, ppl who don't like him, should not click his videos, they should watch their favorite skaters videos who always skate perfectly and never made a mistake... and leave the GOAT and his fans alone.

@@LuckyFanyuI never said I didn't like him though. He's my favourite male skater of all time, and I'd much prefer an error-ridden skate over Chen's robotic skates. However, it's not wrong to say that Hanyu struggled with consistency and he rarely skated his short and free cleanly. Part of that was because of injury, and part of that may have been because of the demands he placed on his slight frame to achieve what he achieved. I don't know. But we can acknowledge his greatness while also admitting that he had weaknesses in his performances - namely, skating clean and consistently.

Good to hear that Yuzu is your favorite male figure skater of all time, it would be great if you leave the past behind, and enjoy the current most amazing Pro Yuzu era, and instead of pointing out mistakes, struggles, injuries... just send him best wishes for his 3rd SOLD-OUT SOLO ice show "RE PRAY" starting in 10 days
