10 Baht Buffet? Incredible Street Carts at Thai Malaysia Border (“KHAO YAM” BLUE RICE)

- I think the Southern recipe of 'Herb Rice' (Khao Yam) has to be one of the all-around PRETTIEST dishes you could ever hope to find. The vibrant colors, the great aromas, and the unique blend of raw, fresh-cut leaves and fruits mixing with the dry roasted herbs, chilies, and coconut, its truly incredible to ALSO have food like this for the cost of LESS than 1$US... and in this market, its actually quite a lot less than a dollar!
I was so excited for this dish all on its own, how could I expect to be rewarded with an entire market-basket-ful of delicious local Thai-Malay recipes to go with it?
Only in the town of Sangklaburi (on the Myanmar-Thai border, in Kanjanaburi) can I ever remember having a meal of this diversity at such an amazing price - in total today our meal selection including more than 10 dishes, in the end the food cost about the same price as the petrol we used to make the trip (about 6$US), but it is a meal experience that I will remember for a long, long time...
This truly is a meal of travel dreams.
Padang Besar is a town you'll find directly on the Thai-Malay border, and the side we visit today lies in the Southern Thailand province of Songkla. The Malay side is a much larger town, while the Thai side is dedicated mainly to wholesale transportation and shipping. The morning market on the Thai side though is INCREDIBLE, and although we arrived a little late to see the entire market in action, this was still one of my favorite single market visits of this entire year so far.
The unique blend of culture, the wonderful mix of foods, and the complex histories that exist in border areas excite me to no end - I love the chance to visit yet another new corner of the BEAUTIFUL country of Thailand.

I'm from Tumpat, Kelantan, near the Thai border and definitely had most of the foods you had when I was growing up. You can also try scooping rice up with those keropok ikan (fish crackers) with nasi goreng, nasi lemak and even nasi gulai ayam (rice with smooth and light chicken curry)

I’ve visited Narathiwat about eight years ago, I think it was a 10 day trip just for volunteering, doing some teaching there, we did not really explore at all. Only one day where we had local food, all the other days were in school… So I am so super happy to be back in this area, you are totally right. The flavors are so deep and rich, it’s hard to eat a lot of the food especially back-to-back meals but, you can see my genuine reaction in this video I just could not believe it. Still can’t believe it :-) it was like Africa and Asia, spices from all the corners of all my different homes all together in one market (Even just in one street cart!!!). Those are the times in life I feel so lucky, it’s almost like living a dream, not even a food dream but even for anyone who appreciates the extreme cultural diversity in situations like this :-) it was such a gift. Asia with a touch of Africa - absolutely. The has this slightly wild touch and culture and the food are a product of so many influences. This goes even as far as the Tamil region of India or even to Persia. So many different ingredients and spices that can be found here in the South. And as you said: We are so blessed. Also here in Samui we have a Muslim community that has settled here many generations ago. Due to their influence also our local food became even more interesting. When you come again, we will take you to places... You will be so so full again :) When seeing your video and both of you on a trip we really feel like we wanna get started immediately. Hi Joel and Lovely Li 😊❤️🙏. Always find your food videos so fun to watch. Love how you embrace different cultures and respect their way of eating. I myself also would eat Chinese food with chopsticks and spoon for soups and eat Indian, Malaysian and African food with my hand. Respecting the Indian culture by using my dominant hand only (in my case left) I do get a few looks in South African Indian restaurants since people typically use a knife and fork in restaurants. I prefer road side food caravans because I get to eat the food the traditional way. By making a small ball with pap (maize meal) you make a small hole with you thumb and essentially use that to scoop up meats and saucy dishes and even veg. I love chopsticks most. Have roughly 50 sets. Some fancy some common bamboo and even have some made from stainless steel. One set was sent by a Chinese friend from China and the patterns and colours are specifically used as a gift for friends. I still pack it back into the display box when washed. It's got little chopstick rests and dipping bowls in that match. Also still want to try mangosteen and durian since we have neither here in SA. Sasha!!! Thanks for the support thanks for the comment :-) the rice is blue because of a flower called “butterfly pea.” The flower is soaked in water, making the water an incredible deep shade of purpleish blue, and then they use that water to color the rice, and many other things as well.

Hi Big Daddy! Good question, but many years late. I can say not only is it safe, I would say as of the most recent trip it is solidified in my mind as one of the most friendly places in the entire planet earth. Sad that the media has done such a disservice, but it’s also not surprising, the media is mainly at fault for most “fears of the unknowns” in most parts of the world. I would encourage you to visit if you can! It’s a gorgeous place full of gorgeous people (and of course gorgeous food) :-) have a great day
The Nasi Kerabu is incomplete without Solok Lada (coconut/fish stuffed habanero), batter-fried fish, and smoked beef. Guess all these sold out by the time you bought it. The budu seemed a bit too dark to be on its own, I would hazard a guess that it's been mixed with other condiments to make it a bit sour.

hi, just my opinion : christians should try to avoid eating "halal" food. The allah people say prayers, and offer the animals to their allah (moon god) before slaughter. followers of christ are strongly discouraged from eating food offered to idols
