  • What I love about PBI is that it is always evolving..
    New features are constantly being released…
    In May 22 release… we have a new feature called Field Parameter, which is a true Game Changer in the way we design our PBI report.
    In this video, I'm combining field parameter with the trusted waterfall charts so that we can allow users to select what value to display as well the breakdown to display.
    The result is super amazing !!! Hope that you will love this new features as much as I do.
    Cheers,
    Isabella Susilowati

    Thanks! This was very helpful! But I don't understand next: if increase is red, decrease green, what means ''other'' in yellow color because there is some value, it's not 0?

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem

      Others, which currently get displayed in yellow colours, means... ''everything else".
      For example if there are 10 cities.
      Year on year sales may be going up in some cities... and going down in some cities.
      Power BI are likely to display only the biggest influencer in the waterfall ... for example...
      displaying top 2 cities with sales going up... in Green
      bottom 2 cities with sales going down... in Red
      and everything else... the 6 cities... will be added together and lumped in as others, in Yellow.

    Super helpful! Do you know how to change the start and end of the chart based on the selection of two slicer?

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem +1

      we just need 1 slicer, get the user to select two items, and you can structure it to become the start and the end. E.g. if it is year, then if the user select 2021 and 2022, then the waterfall can start at 2021 and finish at 2022.
      if you want it to be month and year, then create a slicer where the selections are month & year, so that the user can select Jun-22 and Dec-22, for example, which can then be the start and end of the waterfall.

    thanks for the video! so what is the difference in this case between using slicer and field parameter?

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem

      without using field parameter, you can only use slicer for showing selections on your ''DIMENSIONS' and not ''MEASURES'

    Hi, May I know how to display the waterfall chart as %change? To show 100% at the start and then the breakdown also in %terms where the end is the year on year % change.

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem

      interesting question... I have never tried that before.
      You would need to create another measure "% change of total", and then drop that in the tool tips area.

    Thank you. How does the waterfall show the most relevant variances so that the colum "Others" doesn't hide a big portion of the delta ?

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem

      Go to visualization pane, format your visual, breakdown... and adjust the maximum breakdown shown...

    • @music-hn2jv

      @@LighthouseAnalytix Appreciate your answer. But in this case I don't want to expand the number of breakdowns but want to show the biggest deltas in the same number of breakdowns. Apparently, the standard waterfall doesn't show the biggest variances, but the first ones.

      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před 2 měsíci

      go to format pane on the right and look for the settings to change the colour... The Other is automatically added by PBI. You don't need to create it.

    Thanks. I have question is there way to automatically select last year if I select only the current year in the slicer.

    • @LighthouseAnalytix
      @LighthouseAnalytix  Před rokem

      I can't think of anything right now.
      But if you always want to show just this year and last year...
      I wouldn't include a slicer. I'd just add 'year' as a filter for the visuals on the filter pane and select this year and last year as a default.

      @@LighthouseAnalytix Thanks for the reply. Based on the use case that I have, if I select 202210 in the yearmo slicer then is it possible that the waterfall chart show the breakdown starting from 202110 to 202210 and if I select 202209 in the slicer then the waterfall chart changes to show breakdown from 202109 to 202209. Not sure if possible but thanks anyways.

      With regards Field parameters, it is currently is still in 'preview' mode, i.e. not yet made available to public, unless you opt to turn it on...
      To enable it... go to
      File
      Options and settings
      Options
      Preview features
      and then... tick Field Parameters.
