  • Rampaging Roy Slaven and HG Nelson have been making Australia laugh for the past 35 years.
But as Australian Story found out, behind their brash alter egos, John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver lead much quieter lives.

In an intimate and revealing Australian Story, Doyle and Pickhaver drop the masks, revealing how they were shaped by their childhoods, why they rarely socialise with one another and how their act has endured so long.

I loved one of The Dream instalments for the Winter Olympics. I don’t remember which one, but Katerina Witt visited the show and Roy was smitten. Unusually, he was short of words.

What a lovely celebration. They literally changed Australian speech patterns. That 0 -100 vocal escalation into absurdist enthusiasm / outrage is part of who we are now.
There is no greater joy than listening to HG shaping a question that will entice Roy into full flight. You can hear the glee in the question, because he’s so looking forward to wherever this will go.
35 years on and they still have me in fits of laughter.
    “Now Roy, I know you’ve been….”
“Roy, talk us through it …”
    “Roy, you were there …”
Then that pause before the deep bass Roy “Yesss HG … “ , when you sit there with a smile knowing this could go absolutely anywhere.
The icing on the cake is when one manages to get a snigger out of the other.
Sincere thanks gentlemen. And thank you to all involved in creating this video.

My father died in 2000...during the Sydney Olympics. I owe a great debt of thanks to these two guys who were somehow able to still make me smile, chuckle, and laugh out loud during what was generally speaking a very difficult time for me. Watching The Dream every night somehow was a great comfort to me and made me feel "normal again". Thank you Roy and HG!

I’m 39 and grew up with these two larrikans being unbelievably funny. Just started a new job yesterday and been on the road nearly 30 hours already and happened to come across their podcast. Listen to episode after episode so far and they haven’t lost a touch. Laying in bed at hotel and still looking at them on CZcams excited for the road tomorrow to binge listen to more of their podcast!! Greatest Australian humor you will ever hear and they been doing it for nearly 40+ years in their own unique style that will never get old. God bless you Roy n HG

I remember growing up as a child in the shire it was difficult to assimilate and understand Australian culture particularly what was a joke and what wasn't.
State of origin was one thing that my family did watch and try to understand, I remember one time I was allowed to have a friend stay over late and he said 'oh you should listen to triple J when you watch origin, mute the tv.'
From the late 90s til mid 00's I never missed a game because through listening to Roy and HG I understood a big part of Australian culture and humour that I could never learn in school.
Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to share my experience and admiration for the duo. 💯 Love these guys.

Roy and HG were appointment listening (and later viewing). I had a hard time explaining to my American friends just how funny they were and their wonderful ironic humour. However, when Steven Colbert starting doing his ironic take on a conservative commentator in the USA 15 or so years after Roy and HG, that was when I could finally get across to them just how brilliant Roy and HG were. In fact, a few of their TSL shows preceding the Olympics where they talked about the world visitors coming to Sydney were works of art...Once I had to pull the car over on Campbell parade in Bondi I was laughing so hard. This line will trigger some fond memories: "We're a nation of right handed wipers." LOL. Great to watch this, thanks for posting. Keep on lads!
