- Rampaging Roy Slaven and HG Nelson have been making Australia laugh for the past 35 years.
But as Australian Story found out, behind their brash alter egos, John Doyle and Greig Pickhaver lead much quieter lives.

About Australian Story: Putting the "real" back into reality television, Australian Story is an award-winning documentary series with no narrator and no agendas - just authentic stories told entirely in people's own words. Take 30 minutes to immerse yourself in the life of an extraordinary Australian. They're sometimes high profile, sometimes controversial, but always compelling. It’s television guaranteed to make you think and feel. New episodes are available every Monday.
Their most admirable trait is that they never interrupt each other. Gold!
"The Dream" during the Sydney 2000 Olympics was the funniest 2 weeks of television I've ever seen.
I loved one of The Dream instalments for the Winter Olympics. I don’t remember which one, but Katerina Witt visited the show and Roy was smitten. Unusually, he was short of words.
What a lovely celebration. They literally changed Australian speech patterns. That 0 -100 vocal escalation into absurdist enthusiasm / outrage is part of who we are now.
There is no greater joy than listening to HG shaping a question that will entice Roy into full flight. You can hear the glee in the question, because he’s so looking forward to wherever this will go.
35 years on and they still have me in fits of laughter.
“Now Roy, I know you’ve been….”
“Roy, talk us through it …”
“Roy, you were there …”
Then that pause before the deep bass Roy “Yesss HG … “ , when you sit there with a smile knowing this could go absolutely anywhere.
The icing on the cake is when one manages to get a snigger out of the other.
Sincere thanks gentlemen. And thank you to all involved in creating this video.
What an interesting observation on the vocal pattern thing
My father died in 2000...during the Sydney Olympics. I owe a great debt of thanks to these two guys who were somehow able to still make me smile, chuckle, and laugh out loud during what was generally speaking a very difficult time for me. Watching The Dream every night somehow was a great comfort to me and made me feel "normal again". Thank you Roy and HG!
I’m 39 and grew up with these two larrikans being unbelievably funny. Just started a new job yesterday and been on the road nearly 30 hours already and happened to come across their podcast. Listen to episode after episode so far and they haven’t lost a touch. Laying in bed at hotel and still looking at them on CZcams excited for the road tomorrow to binge listen to more of their podcast!! Greatest Australian humor you will ever hear and they been doing it for nearly 40+ years in their own unique style that will never get old. God bless you Roy n HG
The State of Origin is one of the greatest and most intense sporting moments on the yearly calendar........and Roy & HG took it to a new level altogether.....bloody top duo
I remember growing up as a child in the shire it was difficult to assimilate and understand Australian culture particularly what was a joke and what wasn't.
State of origin was one thing that my family did watch and try to understand, I remember one time I was allowed to have a friend stay over late and he said 'oh you should listen to triple J when you watch origin, mute the tv.'
From the late 90s til mid 00's I never missed a game because through listening to Roy and HG I understood a big part of Australian culture and humour that I could never learn in school.
Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to share my experience and admiration for the duo. 💯 Love these guys.
Excellent post, and a good insight into what might help a foreigner learn to enjoy the subtleties of Australian culture. Good on you.
That's lovely, you couldn't have had a better education!
My dad passed in 2010 and these two are so similar to his sense of humour... I watch it to remember him and remember laughter is always needed in life, and these two are the best!
As obsessed as we all were during the Sydney Olympics, with all those powerful memorable moments, the Dream is still what leaps to mind today!! It was absolute joy and those two hours every evening passed too too quickly, as did those two weeks back in 2000!!
One of the things I really missed when we moved back to Auckland from Sydney. Them and John Clarke.
Loved them in their hey day and thanks to YT can see them again !
I love these 2 gentlemen so much, I am a truck driver and on my long run I would put their cd’s on and just laugh all the way to my destination, they make my works lighter and just looking forward to going to work and listening to their comedy mindset.
I wish to meet them someday and just say thank you, laughters make everything simpler.
They will be forever Australia icons.
John Doyle was a teacher at the high school I attended.
He was the coolest teacher ever.
Watching this from the USA but remembering growing up in Australia during the 90s with these two. So amazingly good to see that they are still at it!
Both are legends of Australian satire...
What a team, pure effortless chemistry.
The long drive home after a Sunday mountain bike race listening to HG and Roy was just icing on the cake of a day well spent.
These guys are absolute legends. Kept me going here in the UK during COVID, locked out from family in Syd/Melb. I hope they never finish.
These two gentlemen are the torvil and Dean of Australian social commentary.Their wisdom, audacity, sheer genius on display every time they flap their lips😉😉😉is sight to behold.
Bravo sir’s☯️🦦🎏💖
Tough to think the "battered sav" and the "hello boys" is 20 years ago.
No mention, however, of the indomitable Rooting King.
And Doyle isn't a one-trick pony. He wrote the series "Changi".
Oh yeah what a time it was and I wasn't allowed to watch it at the time because I had just turned 9yrs old on the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 olympics.
Mr Doyle was a teacher at the high school I went to in Newcastle. I never had him as a teacher but I always heard good things about him.
Wonderful , Roy & H G have provided so much joy for so long Thank You ABC and all outlets that have allowed their stars to shine
Thank U Thank U Thank U ABC - Cracking portrayal of two long standing 'LO-FI' Oz comedy Icons who can magically still pull it off... without ever appearing to try.
Love this! May they live happily in laughter for a long long time. (National Living Treasure awards pending Roy?)
Roy and HG were appointment listening (and later viewing). I had a hard time explaining to my American friends just how funny they were and their wonderful ironic humour. However, when Steven Colbert starting doing his ironic take on a conservative commentator in the USA 15 or so years after Roy and HG, that was when I could finally get across to them just how brilliant Roy and HG were. In fact, a few of their TSL shows preceding the Olympics where they talked about the world visitors coming to Sydney were works of art...Once I had to pull the car over on Campbell parade in Bondi I was laughing so hard. This line will trigger some fond memories: "We're a nation of right handed wipers." LOL. Great to watch this, thanks for posting. Keep on lads!
Absolute icons. Thank you for doing this.
My first live gig (midnight oil) had Roy and HG doing support. Watched every night of The Games. Love them so much. What an essential part of my life and my own sense of humour ❤️
The Dream is legendary..... the way they work is brilliant I stayed up to watch it all back in the day.
I am not much of a sports fan but give me a Roy & HG commentary and Ill watch any sport.
Absolute Australian Gold!!! Spent my whole life listening to and enjoying the dynamic duo.. From Fredie "Fitler on the roof" on JJJ to the “State of origin Keeper payment" in 2020, and have enjoyed every minute of it.. Even the times I’ve spent searching every year wondering if the Festival of the Boot will have the coverage it deserves from the card table on the side line :) Go you good things!!!
These two are responsible for some of the greatest TV and radio ever made. Mid to late 90’s was so special. Thank you 😀
THE DREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🇦🇺👍🏻😊
Bloddy marvellous. I love these guys so much.
Very few things make me smile all the way through but this was one of them, love these guys been watching them since I was a kid.
Relevant is so true. If I turned on a radio today and heard those two very indistinguishable voices, I wouldn't flinch. It's Roy and HG. It's what they do..
I love the footage of the young guys! Been listening to them since '87 - 4 hours of them on JJJ on a Saturday, awesome.
Legends. The dream was hilarious. I was glued to the screen
These two blokes will go down in history as National Living Treasures. May they live a long happy fruitfull life. Don't stop, been listening and watching theses guys since the JJJ days.
Oh Man has it Been 35Years......... HG and Roy you made me the Man I am Today . Fond memories of listening to you two on Triple R then moving to Tripple J . Seeing you two not changing at all after 35 Years in a World that changes like Fashions. I’m Glad I experienced your Talent when I was Young as it’s hard these days to Just Stop and experience Life. l Bow to you Talent and I’m Glad ABC still Exists and Takes a chance with you Style of Comedy....... Thanks for 35 Years and Hopefully another........
Cheers. Mark🇦🇺
I love you Roy and HG. Two of Australia's best sports commentators
My family used to tape there show every week. So so good 😍. The perfect representatives of Aussie men. Political, funny and just funny. I think I love them as much as anyone ❤️. Just the best 😘 THANKS
Thanks for watching! They are comedy legends 👍 - Aust Story
and then you rewound the tape. And then you taped over the tape with the next episode. The good old days
Genius, funniest shows on radio I've ever heard 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙏🏼
There has never been anything like Roy and HG, there never will be.
I started listening to them in the late 80s, along with King Wally Otto in the sound proof booth, quintessential Australia comedy that almost no one else would (or could) understand.
Thank you Greg, thank you John, you’ve provided the soundtrack and comedy of my life - and not just mine but thousands more of my age.
I’m eternally grateful.
I’ll leave my pants at the door of the Lithgow Bank, and go see Elvis the barber…
One of my favourites was the cricket commentary. I think it was Bruce Lee who was "in his nervous 90s", but was actually only on 2 or 3. Anyway, this carried on and he was out for "99". You couldn't write that script. Marvellous.
Hilarious, might have been Brett Lee the other kung Fu exponent 😂
Just discovered the podcast. More brilliance. Thanks guys
Brilliant. No finer Australian satirists. Their knowledge of all things, especially the irrelevant, is incredible. I hope they go for as long as possible. Thanks John & Greig.
I started listening to them in the 1980's on the Jay's.. double J back in those days... on every Sunday kicking the snot out of footy etc... HILARIOUS... I have never stopped but due to having kids and stuff... I am so glad I found all this on CZcams, whom hates me...!!! because I swear and am rude and obnoxious... how else would a good Kiwi be that has lived most of his life in Sydney and has a Wicked sense of Humour...
Thank You SO Much, for showing this.....FANTASTIC
I remember getting out in the garden in the late 80's and turning on the radio to listen to their rugby league report on winners and losers of the upcoming games to be played. Many funny episodes , not to be missed back then ...
Absolutely hilarious 😂
Everything they do is a riot 🎉🎉
thank you Roy and HG for everything!
Roy and HG introduced me to the wonders of - The Double Luuuge
Australian legends of sports broadcast, from humble beginnings in radio through to TV well done lads, and John Doyle, you make Lithgow proud! Poor old Nissan Cedrics didn't get a mention, but Fatso The Big Arsed Wombat now that's legendary!👌👌
John Doyle was a neighbor of mine back in the 70s to early 80s. I remember seeing him in a Young People's Theatre play in Hamilton (Newcastle) and although his role was rather small, I couldn't wait to get home and tell mum that we saw J.D. on stage. John and his wife even had coffee with my parents on their front lawn a couple of years back. Roy and H.G. are Australian comic legends, no doubt about it.
National treasures or to put it another way, outstanding Australians :)
The last-lines. OMFG, nearly split myself in half.
The funniest people in Australia, it's a travesty they are not on TV anymore even for just 30 minutes a week. Love listening to the podcast of their weekly show
Thanks boys. Got a wide and happy smile here.
Absolutely iconic duo.
Loved this.
Lots of laughs. I wish they did British tv 😍
They do a podcast currently. It’s a bit parochial but give it a go,
They did a show on British TV back in the early 00s, called Planet Norwich. I went to a taping they were great.
Brilliant guys. Long may they continue to bombard us with their inventive hilarious rhetoric !
I loved them as all australians did god iam we all miss them terribly never to be repeated hope they all have a great last part of their lives bless you two ❤😂😂😂
Words and phrases I love.
Rooting King.
Terrific.
Each Way Nudger.
Squirrel grip.
Battered sav.
Dutch wink.
Flat bag.
Trousers.
Kicking and screaming over the line.
Max VERSTAPPEN.
Stomp.
Lithgow small arms...
I love these jokers.
Always have. Always will.
"It's a joke, Roy"
And I loved how they named Hopoate "Stopping (at) all Stations - twoooowooooo!" for the State of Origin.
Club buggery I had totally forgotten about that show. Never missed an episode
I was one of those at sydney Uni in the mid 1980s when I turned on JJ and heard Roy and HG call the RL semis. Couldn;t get our of the car for a leak. Then came the RLgrand final of watching the game and listening to them in a great house party.
Cackling with the 'South Coast news.
The names...prince of darkness (Mortimer)and Sigsworth (Whats-a-packet-a) and back door Benny. Then the state of origin.
Fast forward to living in the USA and listening to their podcast as the only thing to keep you sane and wanting to return to Australia.
They will live forever
Amazing doco.
As a Kiwi loved it when they called NZ medal haul "A BRONZE BONANZA"😂😂😂
Brilliant!
It will be a sad day when they stop doing what they do. Thanx boys for the Aussie gold 😂🎉✅
Thank You
The Brick with Eyes and Snakey Substances approve this documentarily
Legends!
"And another 'Hullo Boys'" Genius!
Ok Roy & HG are true legends & so is Bob Hawke. If only we had someone of Bob Hawks calibre running the country today!
I remember these guys from way back when Adam was a boy.
I watched their TV show, not much the radio show. Very entertaining.
For me, they are the voice of my youth and the best memories that i have.
Gold!!
Aussies perfect proof again that if a rule is made that can be broken, we will if it doesn't hurt others in community, we live it Thanks Fatso Roy and HG. Think like the Kwis it is best way to explain why communities have worked to well to beat Covid,
Funniest duo love them
How do we vote for these 2 to be National Treasures
No need, they've long been that!
One Melbourne cup commentary - Roy was "riding" a horse in the race, he was so keen on using the whip, he crossed the finish line on a pile of minced meat.... still don't know who won the race that year... not do a dozen friends... laughing too much
Legends
Their 2000 olympics show was hilarious “like a cup of hot fat with a hair in it”
stone cold legends
They cut it before it got to one of the best bits.
long may they rule!
They have differing, yet clear, traits of introversion. Lenny Bruce in a radio interview he did to drum up business for an upcoming gig opined those who are introverts were and are more creative than extroverts.
I wonder how many people, like myself, only learned that HG and Roy weren't even their real names just now.
HARRY in the HG!!
Only in Australia😢 These Two would be booed out of town in any intelligent country in the world..........I think they know it too!😢
Hello boys!
Crazy Dave into Battered Sav. Comedy GOLD 👍 - Aust Story
@@ABCNewsIndepth Crazy DATE into the Battered Sav!
DaveOz ahh yes, of course!
“Happy rugby league”. All I know about rugba league comes from Roy & HG actually.
You won't eclipse the pinnacle of loving Australia, it's sport, it's competitive, piss taking culture.
You just can't 🇦🇺
Love how Pickhaver keeps switching between haitch and aitch (H). Probably doesn't realise he's doing it.....always thought the haitch was part of his HG persona, but....perhaps not.
Absolutely done consciously... to reel in blokes like you 🤣
Hullo boys 😏
Hail Roy and HG!!!!
What they do is about as Australian as you can get.
Of course this type of comedy is illegal now in Danistan Victoria!
Monumentally cleaver men.

Y'know y' need a good cleansing whinge, but dunno what is safe to whinge about without setting the dogs barking.
Did you really need to include Wendy Harmer, come on not in the same league
Are there any in the same league though?
You never saw The Gilles Report then.
35 years of Roy and HG, 35 seconds of humour.
Sounds like you've battered your sav
