- For some this way to Hana is not ideal, its desert, its unstable roads, and just not the most ideal way to get around Maui, but for those who want to try something new, here is the other way to Hana. I made this video because, before I went on this road I heard some stories about the cliffs and could not find many videos about the road, so I made this video highlighting some of the road.
Driven this path many times while visiting family in Maui. Yes the road is a little questionable at times, but the biggest problem I've always come across is the people who don't know how to share the road. Cars on the mountain side always need to yield and pull over for cars on the ocean side. With the incline if your going up and someone else is coming down and theirs no space to pass your going to have to reverse until theres a safe space to pull off to, because its easier for the car going up the incline to go back down in reverse than the car coming down to to go back up in reverse.
Well, I've booked my stay in March 2018....I ain't driving the road to Hana, lol.
Nice video, thanks! I too took this route while on our honeymoon 20 years ago, with my wife screaming at me while recording with the mini-cam. I remember the rental car warning disclaimer and saying to myself "yeah right, probably be the last time I'll ever be in Hawaii, so why not try it" … I recall when we were pulling out of the parking lot at the turn-around point late in the day, the park ranger was waving everyone to turn right to head back on the pave road to head back the way you're supposed to go … but I just waved at the park range and turned left to take eastern back road route, and the park range frantically waving at me to turn around! At the very end of the route - out of danger, close to 6pm, we found a winey right before closing, thank god too because we needed a drink!
Thank You for the video. Just came back from Maui and I Loved It :) I missed this road, it will be on schedule for my next trip.
Thanks for uploading these nature clips. Im going on vacation here in January and I can't wait! Keep the uploads coming!
Had never been on the back road, so thanks for the insight and tour!
Did this drive two days ago, but did the reverse Road to Hana. We left early in the morning which made it that much easier. There are definitely a few sketchy spots, but most of the way has plenty of room for two cars as long as you drive slow and share the road. Making it to the national park hike before everyone else was that much better.
Great footage. I can’t wait for my trip to Hawaii in a few weeks. One of my excursions includes the drive to Hana.
Just did this drive. I ended up driving all the way around because I was too scared to be on the outside lane. Two choices get crushed by rocks or plunge down a cliff. I chose rocks.😎😎😎
Thanks for the video. Heading to Maui in a few months, and we may take this road. We have driven the Shafer Trail in Moab, UT, so I hope that we have enough experience to take this one on.
I did it in 1990 with a Toyota Corolla. It was a dirt road, a lot of stones. Very dangerous, we were completely crazy, but I will never forget the sight of the ocean we had there, plenty of rainbows.
Glad to hear from you again Jeff. I feared something might have happened..
my wife and I drove from Kihei to Hana on this road in spring of 2016. a great drive...nice scenery, no traffic. Came back on the main road and the traffic headed to Hana was crazy.
This is the direction from Hana. The secluded road past Hana when your trip began in Paia. Worth the bit of suspense when rounding blind corners and squeezing past occasional oncoming traffic.
Dude great video ! Today on 9/12/2019 I decided to do the same route. O man , I almost crap my pants. My wife 🙏 to the gods to make it to the pavement road. My idea was get a small n gas saver car. Wrong or good idea at the same time. If I would of get a wide body Jeep . I would of been freaking out on gas or can’t get pass narrow road or close call getting hit by another vehicle...i lost count how many time rocks fell on top of my roof.
All I can say is great road trip!!!
I was there 9/12/19. It was scary
Bobby Miller yes!!! Best mistake I ever did. Best memory ever 😁
@@provcelica I have great memories from it too!
Hi, I'm going to Maui October 23 for 5 days. I will have fun.
I was 9 minutes in
before I realized you weren't narrating while driving. 😅 Great video
Did this 9/13. Super fun paved road, but after that those one lane dirt roads are more challenging
Thank you
Nice.
We'll be staying at Lahaina and want to start our day with Sunrise Viewing at Haleakala National Park then to Hana. Would you suggest start from the bottom/South of Hana or Windward/North side of Hana? Thanks for sharing
Hakeakala sunrise is not in route to the road to Hana
Nice job steadying that arm of yours.
Yeah dog, that'll be a no from me. I know my limitations! Beautiful video though.
Just got back last week from Maui.
Driving this road was not the best way to spend my time during vacation.
If you like sitting in a car for all day, then have at it.
Looks like both cars have plenty of room if you go slow and pay attention.
I've driven this road many times. Its fun and beautiful. If you can drive straight in your own lane on the Mainland, why should this be hairy. I've never had a problem. Even when locals are whizzing by. Stay to the right , be patient and you will be fine.
We sold our house and will be flying out on the oct 23rd 2017 to look for a house.
Renting in Kehi until we find a pad.
Alllohaaa....
Thanks. Now I know I will not do that drive. Hell no.
I rode that on a Harley Davidson wasn’t that bad on a bike
I don't know why but i wanna bike on that road
I did this whole road to Hana as a loop in a subcompact car
Please advise. I’m doing the whole loop in April... what kind of car would you recommend. I’m thinking Subaru Forester AWD, but I can save money by relying a corolla. Thank you in advance.
Do you think it would be do-able in a small rental car? Seems like most are in Jeeps or trucks. We're going first week of September, so weather should be good-I hope. Thanks for any insight!
What car did you end up driving to Hana?
Doing this in a week
You've mis-titled this vid.
You're going AWAY from Hana toward Kihei via Kipahulu, Kaupo and La Perouse.
Ah yeah, so the "nickname" for that road, is called "Back road to Hana"
Ask the locals how to get to the red sand beach! LOL
Erik Stephens haha yeah. No thank you!! Lol
JibaJabaJ- I'll be a resident on the Big Island as of 10/12. Thanks for all your information and advice.
Hey Erik, where will you be living?
JibaJabaJ - Hilo. Up in the hills just off Saddle Road. place is all set up. Just have to get there. cheers Jeff!
Cool drive. Would be stressful though.
